When I say "I don't care" it's usually not a blanket statement, but it's usually more like "This situation has me so wrapped around the axel (super stressed out) that I just need to let go." And saying anything along the lines of "I don't care" can be freeing in such a situation. I definitely am passionate and care about a lot of things.
Sometimes I think you need a level or balance between the two. Depending on the issue at hand you may just be wanting tolerance. Yes, sometimes I do want be people to give a shit, but then those are the issue that I believe in and they may not feel as I do.
My goodness. It's been a long time since I've thought so hard about a youtube video. I think I watched it three times before I could even find my own thoughts again. Thank you for this.
I like it when you make videos like this. I definitely have to agree on the friends thing, I do the most for them and always will. I mean if the amount of money I spend flying and taking trains and busses around the world doesn't prove that, I don't know what does.
Excellent stuff. And this is kind of on a tangent, but at the beginning of the video, I was reminded of this amazing frozen custard place that used to be near my house. All the seating was outdoors, so I never went inside it, but the building was an octagon, so depending on which window you were standing at, you could see a lot of the interior. Painted on every wall near the ceiling were large words that said "DO SOMETHING," and I always thought that was a fantastic reminder for employees and the rest of us. Don't waste your life. Go do something! I feel like that kind of ties in with giving a shit.
i guess the answer is myself. not in a selfish way though. its just i care most about myself cause im the only person i have control over, and with that control i want to help people, and i want to help our world and society.
Very, very well said. I've been on this planet 52, almost 53 years. It never ceases to amaze me how many people out there just don't give a shit...they don't care about who they hurt, who they step on to get what they want. While I have been lucky enough to see many acts of kindness in my life, it's those who intentionally hurt people that stick in my mind. I often wonder what it is that goes on in their minds....how they justify their actions to themselves and to others...what is it in their makeup that's different. I'd love to know the answer to that.
It's not even so much that there are people who care about themselves over anything else. It's that there seem to be so many people that don't even think to factor other people into the equation. People who can't see far enough past themselves to even consider how their actions affect other people. Every time I see it I can't make sense of it.
Well said. This might be irrelevant, but it got me thinking about how the thing that blows my mind is that there are people who don't give a shit about anything, like, hobby or interest-wise. Especially as a college student, I've noticed that there are so many people I encounter who simply go to school so that someday they can get a job that'll make them rich, but they really aren't passionate about what they're studying or really anything. As someone who's passionate about A LOT of things, I just don't understand how this works. I'm not saying this is a "bad thing", I just don't see how it's possible to go through life without something of substance to make you enjoy it.
Yes! As someone who has just gone to uni I can agree with this! I have met so many people who don't seem to be passionate about ANYTHING. Some of them are lovely people and have become very good friends but it's just a concept I can't grasp.
I like a lot of things but I'm not really passionate about anything. I've tried lots of different things to try to find something I'm passionate about, but maybe I just don't have a 'passionate' switch in my brain. :(
I'm not sure what I care about the most above all things. It's not really something I've spent a lot of time actively thinking about. But I do care about things that are not myself. Maybe I care most about the feelings of others because when other people are upset I want to make it better no matter what. I'm going to be thinking about this a lot more now. Thanks, Alex.
I would have to say storytelling. I wish I could say my family or my friends, but I know I will be able to survive without them, but without stories, I would be empty.
ok, this may look selfish at first, but i care most about myself before others. But this doesn't mean that i don't care about others like my family and friends, i do. I hate it when people think it is selfish to put yourself before others, because it is not wrong at all to care about your own well being before others. You always hear the saying that you can't love someone else before you love yourself, and that has been something that i have been working on for a while, because there was a large portion of my life that i hated every little thing about myself, sometimes those thoughts creep back in, but really, I know to care for myself first and then other people. I have tried caring for other people before myself a few years ago, and that got me into some real dark shit, and i am never going back there, though now i am a very positive person with friends that do care for me and the reason i have learnt to care for them, was because i learnt to care for myself first
There are some things which I just don't care enough about. When there's people in the street/shopping centres trying to *make me care* I do occasionally say in a fairly honest (sometimes annoyed) tone that "I just don't care" and yes, honesty is power in an odd way, maybe it's better to lie than be brutally honest. I care. About making the world better. But I arrive at it through my own philosophies and morals, not by being prodded, cajoled, pushed, prompted or otherwise forced to make the "right" decision based on someone else's philosophies, business ideas, performance targets or morals they think I should have.
YES. And another thing that bothers me about this "I don't give is shit/fuck" trend is that the people who say it usually DO give a shit/fuck about a lot of things. And that's okay! At this point, people just say it to look cool when they're just being phony (sorry to go all Holden Caulfield on you, but I have a lot of feelings on this issue). Bottom line, DO give a shit. Because giving a shit is why A. we have awesome things like books, movies, tv shows, education, thought-provoking youtubers, etc. etc. and B. we're not killing each other.
I'm pretty sure that even Sherlock cares about his friends, actually. He's a pretty passionate person in general. Anyway, this video really made me think! Faith is what holds us together as a species, even if we all believe in different things.
I do give a shit, I would never purposly hurt anyone and I do try to make sure that I think things through. And at te same time, you should always put yourself first, but not at the expense on others. It's important to live your life and not live it through others (says the girl who spend her days infront of youtube), but to live your life with others. Great video :)
Give a shit, yes, but not too much! My main motivation for a long time was to avoid hurting or inconveniencing anyone, which means I've avoided asking for help and speaking up when I'm unhappy (which is very problematic in a relationship). Life is necessarily a balancing act between giving a shit about others but also having your own needs met. I'm in therapy now to learn how to give less of a shit (or, put another way, to give more of a shit about myself). :p
I give a shit about a shared happiness. Those with who can't put others before themselves may end up ahead but alone. I give a shit about getting us all to the top of the mountain together...so we can all party. :)
Things I give a shit about: my husband, our dogs, my cat, my nieces and nephews, and my career (sorry, but yea). Beyond that, for society as a whole - I give a shit about education, minorities' rights (women, gays, etc.), and general freedom from oppression.
I give a shit about being a good person and being happy which I also think are mutually exclusive for myself. If I think I'm being a good person to people around me and I have good people around me then I'm pretty happy :-D
I think we all have a center. We do give a shit. We really do. We just need to make sure we know what we want other people to give a shit about. I made a video on this: WHAT IS YOUR CENTER?
this was a great video. I GIVE A SHIT about a lot of things. it was just nice to sit down and think about them. thank you for that. :) have a awesome day.
I think the way you are framing this is kind of weird. Family is most important to me. I live with my brother (not my parents, but I see them every week too) in part because of this. But how often do your decisions on a daily basis even have an opportunity to hurt the people you care about? Obviously that's important, but there has to be more there than that in your motivations/passions/goals to be a whole person. Even if that goal is just, be content. Anyway, sounds like you've been hurt recently. Hope you feel better.
Surely your own personal being should be the most important thing to you? Don't get me wrong, giving a shit about other people, doing things for your friends and family, making an effort to make them happy is brilliant and crucial but if you put everything else before yourself and your own happiness then you're going to end up being be really miserable.
I think difference here-in lies between your personal being and your personal well-being. It's obviously important to give a shit about yourself and your mental health, but only caring about you is a dangerous and unhealthy too.
Yes. I do.
Alex, I really fucking love you for this video.
DUDE!! YOU ARE AMAZING!!! This video is the truth!!
When I say "I don't care" it's usually not a blanket statement, but it's usually more like "This situation has me so wrapped around the axel (super stressed out) that I just need to let go." This is exactly what I needed right at this moment. Thank you.
My goodness. It's been a long time since I've thought so hard about a youtube video. I think I watched it three times before I could even find my own thoughts again. Thank you for this.
Just came back to this video. Still one of my absolute favorites. :)
I agree usually if people care things, amazing things can happen but if people don't nothing happens
I like it when you make videos like this. I definitely have to agree on the friends thing, I do the most for them and always will. I mean if the amount of money I spend flying and taking trains and busses around the world doesn't prove that, I don't know what does.
Wait, there are people who care about things BESIDES Marvel tentpole releases?
har har har. I like this video.

Yes! So well put. Adopting this as my new motto.
I really like it when you do videos like this. It's a nice time to stop and think.
Thoughtful Alex. I dig.
Woah... Philosophical and really good
Thank you for putting my thoughts into words :]
You're so amazing,I really admire you!

I care about my Friends, but also family, HP, & nerds.
YES, DEFINITELY.

OH MY GOD SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS!
Sherlock reference!
To be fair, some of them aren't very highly functioning.
I'm pretty sure that even Sherlock cares about his friends, actually. He's a pretty passionate person in general. Anyway, this video really made me think! Faith is what holds us together as a species, even if we all believe in different things.
Love ALL, LOVE self ...

LOVE IT!! I'm on the same page!
My number one would be my family definitely
This is a nice reminder to give more of a shit.
Thanks Alex.
There are a lot of high functioning sociopaths

got to say title got my attention. Loved the video had similar thoughts lately
I give a shit about being a good person and being happy which I also think are mutually exclusive for myself. If I think I'm being a good person to people around me and I have good people around me then I'm pretty happy :-D
I really thought you were going to end the video with
"Till then: Give a shit"
But yes, yes I do :)
I think we all have a center. We do give a shit. We really do. We just need to make sure we know what we want other people to give a shit about. I made a video on this: WHAT IS YOUR CENTER?
If the people you hang around with make you feel this way, find new people. They need to get life in perspective.
this was a great video. I GIVE A SHIT about a lot of things. it was just nice to sit down and think about them. thank you for that. :) have a awesome day.
i give a shit about the fact that i was raised right and know how to treat ppl properly and if ppl can't do that than i don't give a shit about them!
where are you?
Still giving a shit .. 2017
I give a shit. I do.
I've never YOOOOOOOOO'd so hard a video. Yes. Yes yes yes.
I like this video and awful lot
I care about my friends, but to be honest I sorta gave up on everything else.

I can't find any sort of religion that says to think of yourself before others.
Hey, I Give A Shit About You Alex Carpenter ! Thanks For A Great Video!
