  • Yacht interior van build episode 3.
    When two sailors convert a van into a full time live-aboard camper there’s no surprise we are building it like a yacht inside helped by Chris’s boat building skills and our passion for joining traditional and modern techniques and materials, the “RoadBoat” is born!
    Whilst we build our next project: an offshore adventure vessell with the aim to be fully electric this will be our home so we’re not holding back on luxary.
    This week Chris tackles his biggest and most complexed veneer to date with American Black Walnut; super nerve wracking when it’s a one shot wonder with SO many hours of craftsmanship at risk if it all goes wrong!
    Also, so we are prepared for any storm 😂 we are fitting Lewmar marine hatches on the roof- but these are different to your standard ocean hatches! They’re going to be ideal on the Road Boat!

      Hi and thanks for commenting!
      So, keep an eye on www.sail-hub.com, there’s not much happening there at present but the boat will be documented there when we start it!
      We also offer advice and help with maintenance, repair or fabrication of everything from boats to race cars and now vans….
      This has generally been through word of mouth however we hope to start a Patreon account soon where will offer our services on there too. If we can help send us an email to info@sail-hub.com and we will see what we can come up with👍

    Wicked! I've found my new favourite woodworking channel. I'm nearly at the end of building a similar interior for my 4WD bus. Curved furniture is the answer for tight spaces. It makes the best use of the room available and, because we move in curved paths, it leaves the bus feeling spacious. It takes a massive amount longer to build - so, it's not for impatient or that's-good-enough people. I have many of the same tools as you. (I love my Bosch gear). Only problem is (after doing too much of this stuff) I have become extremely allergic to sawdust. A few cuts without fantastic dust extraction and I end up with pneumonia. Please look after your lungs.

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  10 дней назад

      Hey Pete,
      Yeah your right in all counts there fella! I would live to see your work too!
      As for the lungs, yeah your right fella. We’re not planning on being in the shed though so it’s just getvthis done and get out! For the boat build we will be working on some proper extraction, it’s really important however we can’t afford it right now.
      Mind you, the boat build is going to be a mix of all of my skills, I’m super excited for the challenge! 🤙😀

    I am very interested in joinery and did refit on a narrowboat. It took me 18months to finish it. I had no mains so everything was done with cordless tools. I wouldn't do it again unless I had the space to dry dock it. Even then I can imagine going up and down ladders would be a nightmare. I am planning on doing a van next. Not to your spec though, you are on another level!

    For anyone building a van, track down the company that supplies your local cabinetmaking/kitchen joinery places. It'll be like an Aladdin's cave of really cool chit you probably didn't even know existed - like those neat little hinges. And almost certainly at a more wallet friendly wholesale price.

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  25 дней назад

      Hey, thanks for that!! Much, much appreciated.
      Yeah, in our old workshop it was a dream, HEPA filters, air management the works. Simply brilliant.
      Given we’re only in this shed briefly we just don’t have the money to spend on this gear any more, and the shed we’ve just moved to (you may have noticed the closing shot was in a different shed) has no power.
      So it’s masks for us, and we do use them a lot, in fact most of the time. But yeah, I get lazy if it’s just quick cuts and I should not. Thanks for your concern, a real valid point 👍

      Yup, the track saw is fab and of course a shop vac is too…. We only have a mini festoon vac at the moment and the bags are silly money. • @SailHub
      @SailHub  25 дней назад +1

      Yeah, there’s a lot going on in boat works for sure! Can’t wait to get into ours to be honest!
      Aye…. Varnishing has been a problem buts it’s down to the thinners, spray thinners hoes off quick so that helps with the fill process but we still need to sand in between which has been laborious.
      The top coat will be a one part with 20% brush thinners. Thy will go off in 10mins. We will probably use an air cleaner too as it’s even more dusty in the new shed we’ve just moved too….

    Really love your work. I recently found this channel, and just awesome. Having been a boat builder on some nice stuff before it's great to see your craftsmanship being used on this project. Very nice. Looking forward to seeing it come together.
    Have you thought about using a hoover dust extractor for your tools, will help keep things under control for bonding and varnishing. I've used some good kit for this kind of stuff....
    Keep it up, well done

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  12 дней назад

      Hey Chris,
      Thanks fella, glad your enjoying our journey and great to have you inboard! 👍
      As for the extraction, thanks mate, I really appreciate your thoughts, sadly we no longer have any of that gear, we sold it all when we sold our yard to set sail. I have a small festool extractor I kept for sanding onboard other peoples boats, I use that for sanding the finishing coats of varnish but the track saw and planer etc just fill the bags in seconds and to be honest… we can’t afford to keep buying them for our own jobs!
      When we move onto the boat build I will sort something out for sure, but that will be likely in a different location, possibly a different country. We just don’t have the storage space to keep it either, everything bar the hand tools will be being sold after the van build as we have no place to keep them.
      Hopefully we survive the dust storm and get onto the boat soon! 👊

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  25 дней назад +1

      Hey, sure. We can do that… that’s just the first coats, a full gloss goes on later.
      Basically we build it uk to a full gloss finish but after thy I will put a rubbed finish on it, the gloss is not my taste, but… the technique is the same before the satin rubbed finish goes on.

    Great video! How do you like your lumberjack planer thicknesser? Seems to be processing the walnut with relative ease!

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  25 дней назад +1

      Hi Will, I got it second hand for this job alone. It’s cheap and cheap, can’t recommend it to be honest it’s just not good. The quality is poor, the beds are not flat. It’s not consistent in thicknessing so really I just use it to get somewhere close and finish by hand…
      Walnut is also pretty soft to work so it managed it, oak tends to get torn out but that could be blade sharpness but also speed.
      Anyhow; the king and short of it is it works but I can’t recommend it 👍

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  21 день назад +1

      Yeah, it’s tricky varnishing in dusty environments. It all boils down to camera tracks mate! 😂
      Not really the finish isn’t perfect but it’s way good enough for the full coats that you may have seen from us to date, the product and thinners used is also super important. Basically we need to minimise wet time it the whole farm would get stuck to it… same as a boatyard really though. As for the finish coat… well there’s tricks to help there too but it’s all pretty simple yet your not guaranteed anything…👍
      We’ve been asked a bit about that so we may do something on it if there’s enough interest 👍

    • @ifell3
      @ifell3 21 день назад +1

      @@SailHub definitely, I know editing and filming takes up more time, and some of your tradecraft is taught by hard sweat, but I think people would really like it.
      Have you heard of Clean Armor Wood Finishing, it cures by UV light. Stubbynubs did a video on it. Personally I think it's just a watered down UV resin that people use in 3d printers 🤔 but it looks really promising if in the US.

    • @SailHub
      @SailHub  21 день назад +1

      @ifell3 thanks for that, we will get into it at some point.
      I’ve not heard of the varnish but I have used UV resins in the past. Mainly on surfboards and can see how it. Could well be an advantage.
      The thing for me is that varnishes need to be chosen for the environment and useage. After that it’s a case of sorting how your going to use it. That’s where the time comes in and the skill set / knowledge a little I guess.
      All that being said I think it’s a real benefit for have a finish to go off super quick, but it could also be a negative is some situations.
      Cheers for the suggestion, I will give it a look over at some point for sure!! 👍👌

    • @SailHub

      Hi again Jim, nice to hear from you chap, the plane is from a Canadian company, Veritas. I thought I preferred my previous lie Nielsen as a dedicated bevel up as it’s that bit more nimble… But as this one is a bit wider on the sole I find it is a superb all rounder and I use it for everything! Can’t remember the last time I picked up my no.4 or 5!
      As for where to get one, they are pretty big outfit so it should be relatively easy. Oh, see if you can get an A2 blade it holds an edge and doesn’t mind moisture too much 😉 they also do pmv11 blades, I prefer A2… less time spent.
