@@prevost8686 series 60 came along after the mechanical engine. Detroit Diesel was still running 2 stroke 8V-71&8V92 to compete back then. With that being said. I love my series 60 Detroit!

Love this guy , straight forward ,direct and gets it done with great knowledge and experience . Best part of all is , he shares that knowledge . I have a Pete 358 getting ready to drop a fresh 350 small cam with a 15 speed . Presently it has a 5 and 4 . I would like to keep the aux trans if I have room . I am on a Island with large mountains (Volcano's) so a few extra gears will be welcomed at my experience level . I need all the help I can get .
I got a big Cam 350, I put a "0" button in it & a white spring, backed off the Anoroid valve about three threads, shimmed to ,2450 rpm without a load! Shifts at 2100, love it! With 355 gears & a 13 speed od trans and tall rubber she is a Screamer! About 15 feet of black smoke out of the stacks between shifts! An.old truckers TOY!
Your truck is gorgeous! That’s one of my favorite things about the 855 Big Cam is how reliable they are and easy to beef up. My fire department just retired our 1973/74 Howe International Hendrickson with a Small cam NTF365 that I was able to tune it up to 400 horsepower. Smoked hard and only pulled about 1,050/1,100 ft pounds, it had an Eaton 906B 5 speed. It’s just sitting at the yard since 2017 😭. Great video! Keep her running strong
Thanks for the video buddy. Buying an 79' k100 cabover thats got a big cam 400 in it. They said it has a 444 head. I believe it's going to be a good deal in the end. subscribed!
Good stuff Ezra. 🤩 Hey, if you ever want someone to help you for a week or so , I would be interested. I’m sure there would be many of your followers that would enjoy doing the same thing. Just think of all the projects you could get into. 🧐🤩
Back in the day on my big Cam one I pull the bell of the pump and I would pull 5 washer's Sometime more off the shaff for more fuel and put me a 10 button in , I never did mess with the throttle shaft and she only had like a vapor smoke and In the mountains she really pulled good , I would only let it heat up to about 950 on the pro. I know you can go to 10 or 10.5 on the old school Cummins and let them run, but I never did do that always backed out, I got to admit This is the best page for knowledge i been on , Some of these guys that do not know what's going on with there truck they are Definitely learning from you keep up the good work be safe
that fuel button u showed us-is that what the older fellas back when i first started out trucking(85) they talked of putting a stinger in their pumps back then? i never get tired of seeing that new red paint.
Excellent video Ezra, I have heard some of my older friends talking about springs and buttons and never knew what they were talking about, “Old Red” is a lucky truck👍👍
LMAO. Back 45 years ago. The first thing we used to do was change to a number 10 button and some shims. Usually wound up with a number 5 button and shims. JUST SAYING. 🇺🇸🤔🤣👍
Lots of good info in this video. I love messing with the p-pumps on the Cummins. You can really unlock some power from p-pump mods. Really excited to see you build this thing when you in-frame it. Gonna be good shit. 👍👍
I always ran a 13 button in my big cam 400! Seemed to work great, made about 500 hp with the other mods you mentioned ! Just sayin'! 42 years over the road .
I wish we could talk more in terms of foot pounds of torque and where in the rpm range. That is the measurement of force that is really getting the work done on this truck.
That's kinda a loaded statement. Hp is a mathematical formula of tq/rpm. Same horsepower will pull a grade at the same speed but less tq will be in a lower gear. Average power across the curve has a lot more to do with how two engines will perform different at the same horsepower. But that relationship of tq/hp and how it relates to performance could almost be a 20 min video all in itself
It would just be nice to hear the torque this thing puts out and what the increase would be from your mods. I’m more impressed by the torque numbers on any engine, and how flat the curve is.
I have been leery about doing the button for fear of getting the pressures too high. I have heard that you can put a lot of wear on the cam with too high of pressure at the injectors
The 88 IH I drove had over 750 PSI at the rail at max and the cam and followers are still in the truck 24 years later after getting that much pressure. Your never running that hard that long except on the hills. The power is there only when you need it.
I have a big cam im having problems with it surging at idle and is lazy coming down on throttle when you let off has new fuel lines from tank and filter
I got a question, i have a cummins nhc 250, 855 and it won't idle under 1300, at start up it will idle at 600 for 20 seconds, then jumps up to 1300rpms and stays thier. I adjusted idle at pt pump, I've turned down 3 times, and each time idle at 600 then jump up, adjusted again, idle at 500 then jump up on its own, adjusted again, idle at 500 and jump up to 1300 rpms, i can shut truck off, start up and idle at 600, then 20 seconds it jumps up to 1300 on its own and stay right thier. I'm not sure, it don't act like getting air, because don't stumble at all, everytime I start it, it starts right up, no hesitation.
Thank you for all your help. So I have a 3406b but I don’t know the h p a 359 85 do how l can put more power on it because l think it’s only 400 so l need Sam thing with 450 hp a least
On mine we used different pistons and piston oil coolers different turbo engine is re timed and the fuel turned up to make around 600. To make 450 on a factory 400 you should be able to do that with just pump settings
I'm resealing my PT pump and figured i'd change the button..It has a 15 in it now..It had a tan painted tamper wire on it and the ball is still in the shaft so I'm assuming it has bever been changed..Should I go with a number five button?
I have a 1981 NTC240 small cam Cummins I just purchased in an international dump truck. I have been chasing dirty fuel issues I’ve clean a ton of fuel lines on it and I’m still having dead pedal problems intermittently. How resilient are the PT injection pump to dirty fuel? Do you think I need to send it off for a rebuild? Thanks in advance!
What for steel pistons are you going to use. There are no steel tops made to fit 855...to use n14 pistons you gonna have to change the crank because the 855 rod journals are smaller than n14
Your thinking of the 3406 that has a different size rod journal between the e-b model. ended up putting a b model in this truck as this engine had cracked counter bores and a few other block issues when it was torn apart

Currently I've got 5/8" ID tube led to the inlet of the PT fuel pump -- but on yours it seems to be a lot bigger. What's correct? (No turbo/super)
im not a boat guy, but if your able to get your max rpm adding horsepower probably wont do you any good without changing the prop to be able to take advantage of the added horsepower id also at a minimum want know exhaust gas temperatures especially without a turbo, you might be very limited on being able to add much fuel without also adding air.
Hi how do i delete the air compressor from my engine. Is the fuel pump drive different from the air compressor drive? I'm using the engines for a boat so don't want the compressor there. Thanks
I'm not sure Iv never even looked at a boat with a big cam in it. You would either need to find or make a adapter to go from the gear drive on the compressor to the Lovejoy style coupling on the pump. Nope

Do you have a playlist with Cummins 400 videos on it
👌🏻😎🇨🇱another great video.
Changed my steering box a year ago. Took me about 3 days long haul driving to get ALL the air out.
Give it time before you go tearing everything apart
Which port did you tap into when installing the dual fuel line
Some high flow 300cc injectors a holset ht4C some pump work advance timing & good coolant & she will haul anything

I would say you could just gut the compressor remove the piston and connecting rod but that may cause a Ballance issue and I believe that rod bearing in the compressor is pressure oiled if I remember right so you would probably have to weld the oil passage shut. Or better machine a straight shaft that passes threw. I think I would just add a air tank somewhere and take advantage of having a source of compressed air onboard. The compressor will be unloaded and basically free spinning except for when it's building air anyway.
