So wish my Dad had have done projects like this when I was a kid, he's brilliant...I'd have been all over it......not playing my Pokémon games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Radial 4 Valve Combustion.RFVC. if anyones wondering. Grunty motor. Had twin carbies. Lot of torque. My 250 suffered from power loss once it got hot..that where my mates KLR 250 would come into its own. Have an 85 Alpine white model im doing up at the moment. I wish i had the skill of this guy. Good vid.
I am loving the videos rebuilding the xl600 you are a wealth of knowledge good sir. I had my 86 XL 600 stolen 8 months ago and have just recently recovered the rear tire finally. The bike was recovered the day it was stolen . They pushed it through the woods for a good half mile and tried starting it themselves and could not figure it out even though they had the key . LOL sissies . They took the rear tire hoping to come back and try again, I've just got all the parts and from Ebay that I was missing to put it all back together and cannot wait to ride my baby.
Hard plating your rockers yourself...very cool. Thanks very much i really enjoyed this.If you seen my xl600 you would be shocked the complete opposite of yours...not washed in 12 years. 😯
I see you went with the orange peel look. LOL. Practice makes perfect. The harbor freight Spray guns work fine with just a little steel wool, and super fine sandpaper and elbow grease. We use Princess Auto spray equipment, it's about the same caliber...
That motor is a thing of beauty! Powder coating looks better than new, your rechroming is a science not for the novice. Were replacements not avail? Thx for this video👍
so i have a 1984 XL350R I'm working on, my son has been using it and had some trouble, when I took the oil drain plug off a small steel ball rolled out with the oil, I pulled off the clutch side cover and found a small piece of something that broke off but can't tell where it came from, everything looks good though, since it looks like you have down a complete teardown, any idea where a small steel ball would have come from ?
My 83 xl600r. Starts cold with just one kick but after as little as 2 minutes running I can not get it started without push, we’ll tow me with a rope start. When it running it’s running great but it I turn it off, I can’t start it until it’s cold. Can you suggest anything that might be going on? Oh and I rebuilt the carbs completely thinking this was the issue. I also made sure no intake leaks. Help!!!!
I've had the same issue on my 86. I feel like it is flooding the engine somehow even though I'm not using the choke. I've tried priming the cylinder before kicking it without decompression and just kicking it. If I don't get to start procedure just perfect when the engine is hot it is a pain to get fired afterwards.
How do I get the air box off? I have all upper bolts off, but the bolt on the lower left side of the box side on the air box just spins. Would like to remove the whole box and clean it out. Thanks!
Hello, can you tell me what is the function of the "hole" in the head cap in front of the mounting place? Like beetween the mounting and the valve adjustment screw? I bought xl 350r 84 and there is a massive leak from that hole and i dont know why is it there
I hate to keep bugging you, but how did you get your piston pin out of the piston/rod? The shop manual just says “press the piston pin out of the piston.” Is there a tool you recommend for removing the piston pin?
I use one of those woodworking clamps that you squeeze like a ratchet and it keeps getting tighter and use a deep well socket A little smaller than the wrist pin on one end and you may have to cut a big hole in the other side of the clamp
@@bigdmc1 Thanks. I tried to use a couple sockets and a long bolt but it won’t budge. It’s stuck on the small end of the rod. I’m afraid it’s going to need a new rod and I’ve never done a bottom end before. I guess I’ll have to figure it out.
You did take the snap rings out didn’t you unless there’s a lot of carbon buildup they should just push out pretty easy if not use some heat to burn the carbon off
The Monza Red is such an odd color. It looks kind of bad on its own like if you were to paint a car that color or a large surface and even on the frame when you’re looking at just the frame it doesn’t look right, part of that might be the video but Once you start putting everything together and you get the black and silver on top of it it looks amazing. That’s one of the reasons the 84 models are my favorite. I love the 85s but they have that orange and blue and it looks good but it’s still orange and blue and looks a little tacky in the red and black just looks so much better.
I noticed you used an impact to removed the head bolts. I’m working on an 86 XL600R with my son and I can’t get my head bolts to budge with my electric impact. I’m a little worried about breaking the bolts using an air impact. Do you have any suggestions? The rusty head bolt near the spark plug came loose easily. All the head bolts under the head cover are tight tight tight.
You can use a breaker bar and that way you can feel for yourself the tension I just use the impact because it’s faster The bolts are going to be pretty tight that hold the head on but they are strong bolts so I wouldn’t worry about them breaking
Martin Prückl You mean the lubraplate I put on the cam before I put the valve cover on if so it’s a waterproof grease used for boat motor lowers or assembly grease
I got most of the parts at the local Honda dealer because some of the parts from the current XR650L are interchangeable I am not sure about the XR 500 as it’s a completely obsolete bike so you might just check eBay
great work sir! Are those boots from front forks new? And if yes, is there any way you can give me a link or something so i can buy them? Cause i have the same bike and i can't find them. Thanks a lot and keep up the great work.
Βασίλης Λεών No they are used but in good shape and not all cracked like most of them are the guy I bought the bike from had them he must’ve bought them along time ago so I put them on
Look up bellows covers at McMaster Carr’s website. You might be able to find an affordable replacement there. Amongst many other things that you never knew existed. I use the site all the time at work for various projects. Hope it can help.
I was around 14, when split 50cc engine, I couldn't put it back together, had to make father do it. So this kid in the video should be learning lots from his dad.
Hello Mike, I bought a couple day ago the same bike : 600 XLR from 1987 , paint code NH138. I live in France and it’s difficult to find some parts like plastic kit, exhaust ... Can you give me some contact to find it ?
I found the easiest way to assemble a xl600r is engine first, carbs then air box. Trying to squeeze the carbs in between the engine and air box is a real big hassle.
KNOW BETTER WAY TO PUT ENGINE ON TYE FLOOR AMD THEN PUT FRAME ON IT ITS MUCH SIMPLER AND EASIER BUT ALSO DID IT LIKE YOU BECOUSE ALSO LIKE U HAVE WHEELS ON BIKE AND STERING AND ALL.COULD I DO 0:34-1:00
I gave you a thumbs down because you kept pulling or pushing your son aside when he was there trying to help work on the motorcycle. Let the kid learn!

Just got a xr500r. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this video.
You do great work buddy.
Lots of respect for doing this.
Hey just got my dream bike (600xlr) been watching your videos - great demo , thanks.
Thanks for making this series. I just found a 86' XL600R that I am thinking of doing this to
How's that going? I got the same bike.

Looking good, nicely done 👍
Mate that motor looks like it just came of the assembly line in Japan....great work.
And here, I thought him powder coating his own parts in the first video was wild... Hard chroming too?!? This guy is a legend.
what a clean project!!!!
Loving your channel cheers from down under
amazing to see it on a great bike such as this one! thank you

Also I am still riding my 89 XR600RK had since 1992 and still going strong 💪 11700 km 7300 miles
super work...you should start a XR repair facility
Great job

Great restoration and detailed videos. May I ask what color code or the type of paint you used for the silver swing?

i found with mine even tho the choke was off it wasn't returning up all the way .cleaned it that sorted the hot starting problem

try pulling on the bolt outwards while you loosen it.
Ottimo lavoro..!!

Sweet restoration. Those OEM parts must cost a packet. Certainly looks good but at what cost to restore?
Mike where do I get parts for the same bike ? Honda xl 500 and 600R

so every mounting step you do and every piece you install back, you do it while it's all in the tdc right? thank you in advance
Elia Coppolecchia Just when doing the valve timing and putting the valve cover back on
What year xr650l parta did you use?
Great job sir. You could see mine xl600r if you want ansdrifter

I agree, never liked the odd yellow number plates that came on the 85’s.
wondering why with all the metal grinds from the broken tensioner you didn't split the bottom case and clean out the bearings and all

Nice video! What powder coating did you use?
how do you remember , where everything goes?

Men like you are slowly disappearing I’m afraid of the next generations and the lack of skill and talent like this ..... we may be doomed one day.

I bought a couple day ago the same bike : 600 XLR from 1987 , paint code NH138.
I live in France and it’s difficult to find some parts like plastic kit, exhaust ...

I used to put engines that size in with one hand.
I found the easiest way to assemble a xl600r is engine first, carbs then air box. Trying to squeeze the carbs in between the engine and air box is a real big hassle.
what is the reference of your handlebar thank you
jeremy acqua They are Renthal CR high Ricky Johnson bend
Bigdmc1 thank you very much I am about to restore a 600 xlr too, a big thank you from France jeremy
What's the price for you to do something like this.? Just the engine part though
My time is very limited so I would have to charge At least $2000 to rebuild an engine.
Do you have a number I can contact you privately for shipping information?
Bom dia eu tenho uma moto xl600r e eu preciso das mangueiras que em menda os dois carburador é eu não estou achando pra compra como que eu faço
I want to restore my 1984 XL600R and would you be able to direct me to a Honda parts store that sells parts & accessories for my XL600R?
Most parts are not available anymore as the motorcycle is too old you would have to just find parts on eBay or something like that
