    It takes quite a bit of heat to melt a ball like that, and unless you thin skin the element that burns in the furnace, you won't get enough heat down there, well, in theory. I had a cast iron forge made by a friend, and he put an aluminium vane in the bottom where the air comes from. It's a big, hockey puck like piece.
