Not really practiced in the commercial fishing industry aside from tunas. When I keep a fish to eat, I usually clean it that day and it makes a big difference in appearance when I clean that fish. Fish caught commercially usually sit on ice (gutted) for a couple days before being cleaned. For whatever reason, the blood seems to dissipate when they have time to rest on ice prior to being cleaned and the meat has a similar appearance to a fish that was bled and cleaned in the same day.

I’m not hating on the commercial guy( start in May). But it’s BS that recreational has to wait till September For Gag. When both pull out of the same quota harvest of 90k + lbs 2023 recreational lasted less then a month because the quota had been met. So Florida executive order closed early. Let’s be honest here it’s about the taxes collected not the population. Commercial taxes minimum 5 times before consumed not including boat and all other taxable items. Recreational once maybe twice not including boat and all other taxable items. Same with all other species. Run by The FED now. Population that can provide for itself doesn’t need the FED. 🤔

This is North Carolina fishing. Our commercial and recreational seasons will both open May 1st here. Commercial is getting a huge quota reduction and recreational has gone down to a 2 fish per vessel limit, as well as a May 1-June 15 season (down from a historical May 1-Dec 31 season). It's not commercial vs recreational, it's all of us vs those who decide what we can catch. Fish need protection, there is no doubt about that, but I hope that one day regulations become more realistic for many of our North Carolina species that we aren't allowed to harvest. It is hard to understand regulations when what we experience on the water directly contradicts what we are being told.
