For EDC in the town I think the No. 7 is great, even better than No. 8. Why?
The #7 has an 8 cm long blade, but the #8 has the blade 8.5 cm = only poor 0.5 cm longer. BUT! For this 0.5 cm + length of steel you get much bulkier and longer handle than on the #7.
So, the Opinel #7 with 8 cm blade fits much better in my trousers or jacket pocket when going out and being around people in the civilisation than the #8.
Into the woods I get the No. 9 - big enough to work with but it has not so massive handle as the No. 10.
Thank you for the review. Greetings from the Czech Republic.

I've got a 13, and in the kitchen it's actually really useful. It folds away too, which is a nice feature when you put it away in the knife draw.

Great review! Grateful Panic sent me your way..glad he did!
Opinel's are great knives. The blade geometry lets it cut even when its not very sharp. I bought a custom bladed nbr 9 in M390 steel..what a great performer. Holds it's edge for a long long time, and super slicey! The guy I got it from does them in a few different steels, even 3V. He also mills the handle out to put bronze washers in it. Not cheap, and I'm sure most folks won't think it's worth $100, but I'm quite pleased with it. I'd do it again were I to lose it.

Thank you, and thanks to Grateful Panic for sending you here!
I agree, Opinels are awesome, the No. 7 was my EDC in Germany for right around 3 years, and it served admirably throughout!
The knife you're describing sounds awesome! Bit out of our price range at the moment (pandemic has hit us pretty hard), but I'd love to see it nonetheless! If you've got a video of it, feel free to send us the link! If not, but you'd be willing to send some photos of it, feel free to shoot them over to hakamakiknifereview@gmail.com :D

@@practicalknifereviews1600 it looks the same as any other Opinel, except the blade is marked m390. If not for that, you wouldn't know it was not a stock Oppie. I have a pic or 2 on my IG acct if you are on IG, my handle is the same as here. The guy who makes them is Triangle Toos out f the Ukraine. He also does them in 3v, s125v, and S90V. At least last I checked those were the choices.
I'l take a pic or 2 and send it to ya when I get a chance

Best IMO for EDC is the N°08 Garden. Handle long enough for a 4 finger grip, but more slender than the main series for pocketability. Spearpoint blade for draw cuts, rather than the clip point in the main series.

I agree. I have carried regular no.8 for a long time (and still like it a lot) but the form factor on the garden is excellent and better in small pockets.

If they get harder to open, you could do the opinel knock method.

I have them all. No. 13 is the real deal, ready to go out of the box, like all of them. Be careful when use them, they will cut to the bone! I use no other knives, even if I have quite an extensive collection, because a simple Opinel folding carbon no. 8, will do the job for all tasks. Of course they are not designed for chopping or batoning so hold your horses here! The carbon will rust even if carefully cleaned and wiped so make sure you use it! I leave a thin layer of butter of cooking oil or animal grease on the blade, seems efficient. When bought, in France, there is a layer of synthetic oil for fine works(or however is called on your part of the world) on the blade, so if you wish to store for long time think doing the same. Easy to sharpen, I do it once a year. Hope it helps?!

Of the carbon blades are oxidised, just strop them with a paste. I keep mine like that and it is kept shiny no problem

Knives like Opinel and Victorinox proves the stupidity of people who spend hundred of dollars on expensive knives like Spyderco and Benchmade. The last ones are made from high alloy steels and have very durable edge but are expensive to buy and needs professional tools and skills to sharpen.

My Japanese carbon kitchen knife had that problem at the beginning. Since it developed a patina it doesn't have that issue anymore. The opinel didn't give a metal taste to the food from the beginning
