Been looking for a cleaning rod for my 1883 for around 7 years now. Saw that yours was absent and thought it’s probably near impossible that I’ll ever find one. Good luck
Hello Sir, My cleaning rod was removed when California militia blocked the rod channel with their bayonet lug. They did this to 386 of these guns ! So there must be 386 of these rods out there in the world somewhere ? Good luck to you as well,................Doc
As usual another great video showing all the interesting features of these classic old guns . Watching you shoot is almost as good as doing it myself and best of all I don't have to clean them . I've bought a lot of old guns just so I could experience firing them . In my early years of collecting I loved Winchesters . Living in Canada they were not as common as in the US , but for some strange reason I found quite a few model 1876's , however I never found any Hotchkiss's . Thanks for finding them for me and showing me how they work .
Hi Ross, I'm saving up all these dirty gun in a pile so when you visit we can have a cleaning party. There is no free lunch on this channel ! HaHa. Winchester lever guns are great , but believe it or not, I don't have any. I do have several single shot 1885s.............Doc
Doc! You have outdone yourself again. I'm running out of complements... Very interesting guns, and the 45-70 cartridge is allways fun to shoot. Thanks again for sharing!
Hello John, Glad you caught the show, and thanks for the encouragement. I know that you have been very busy, but I'm waiting to see your next video.........Doc
Amazing video! the best source of info I have seen on the three models of Hotchkiss plus patent data! I just unearthed a civilian 1883 model sporting rifle that I will be consulting the Cody museum over to see If I can get the records. It is in need of restoration but this has been a big help! Thanks.
Hello A.J. Glad you enjoyed the presentation. And congratulations on your 1883 find, they are the most refined model. Best of luck on the restoration, Regards....Doc
Hi David, and welcome aboard. Thanks so much for the kind comment. I enjoy the historical arms shooting and also the video making process. Regards...Doc
Very nice rifles! I just won an 1879 pattern rifle at auction, and I'm trying to get my head wrapped around the dial. So 12 o'clock is safe and 6 o'clock is the magazine cutoff. Are the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions both for firing with the magazine engaged?
Hello Sir, And congratulations on your new rifle. This dial is very confusing and the best explanation is in the official write up in the 1879 Navy manual. Please see frames at 6:02 in the video, ( click on the blue link 6:02 ). Regards.....Doc
Hi Doc that 1883 looks like it brand new. And the speed that they chamber a round is amazing. But you do realize there are quieter ways to make kindling. Excellent video!!
Hi Stephan, Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Quieter ways, Yes, but a more fun way, ....No. The only downside is chipping that big lead clinker out of the stove grate every spring !
7:00 They had a 6 round 45-70 government caliber bolt action rifle, and they kept the Springfield single shot until the 1898? Man military commanders were out of touch.
Hi Steve, Thanks so much. Yes, when the magazine is full, and the spring is fully compressed, they really fly into the chamber. The 1883 model is quite refined, too bad it didn't become more popular. ....Doc P.S. Waiting for your next adventure on video.
Man, I love how the 1883 looks. I think having the old rotary switch like on the 1879 to simplify training a bit would have been ideal if it were adopted in bigger numbers for groups like the national guard or state militias
Hi Vincent, The 1883 does look great and very well made also. If Winchester could have scrapped the magazine cutoff, it would have been simple to operate. Regards....Doc
Thanks Doc for another very informative & entertaining video. That flat nose bullet you were shooting appears similar to a Lyman mold one that I use periodically that weighs in at approx: 420 grains. Thanks again Doc! BTW, Congrats on knocking down that elusive 7-10 split. 👍🏻
Hi Jeff, Good to hear from you. So you caught the 7-10 split, that's my best and only trick shot. I'm a one trick pony, in a one horse town. Your 420 Lyman is the big brother, my bullet being a 293 grain ( Lyman 457191 ) 20:1 alloy SPG lube. You must be knocking over large heavy silhouettes ! ? ! ...Regards...Doc
Gracias por tu comentario. Hago todo lo posible para mantenerlos limpios y en buen estado. para la próxima generación de tiradores. Gracias de nuevo. Thank you for your comment. I do my best to keep them clean and in good order for the next generation of shooters. Thanks again.........................Doc
Something about the bolts remind me of a Mosin-Nagant Rifle. I am always surprised how long it took for governments to use detachable magazines. And to get away from tubular magazines in the Buttstock and under the barrel.
Hi Robert, Yes it does look like a M-N bolt. The Remington-Lee with its detachable box mag. was in trials with the the Hotchkiss, and the trapdoors, but the U.S. kept their trapdoors.
Another very interesting set. A question about you 45-70 loadings if you don't mind? I've currently a Mirikou Winchester Hi-Wall which is a bit of an old shoulder tenderizer even with trapdoor load spec rounds. When I tried BP loads of 55-60ish grs., recoil was much more tolerable. Cavalry loads (50 gr. 400 g.cast) are usable but after 20-25 shots, "Uncle Arthur" starts to work me. I couldn't help notice, your moderate recoil loads. Could you share what they are? Are you using 35-40 grs. and a case filler such a Dacron or grits/Cream of Wheat etc? BTW, do you paper patch your bullets? Thought I saw some white collars on your loads. Looking create some plinker, accurate, fun loads not bear stoppers. Thanks in advance, enjoy your vids very much.
Hi Paul, Thanks for the comment. U.S.Military bolt action rifles by Canfield in a great source. I too had mine for many years and just shot them for the first time last month. P.S. I enjoyed your Fairbanks video...................Doc
Hi Mitch, Lefties Unite ! I would say it is more natural to shoot most bolt guns as a right handed person, but for slower deliberate shooting it makes little difference.......Doc
This is the most comprehensive video on the Winchester Hotchkiss I've found so far.
Thank you Sir, Glad you could come along on the adventure.......Doc

Very intersting video Doc - I learn so much from you! That automatic magazine feed is very slick. I'll have to keep my eyes open for one of these 😀

The Way The Magazine Shoots The Cartridges Into The Breech I Wonder If It Would Feed Turned Upside Down As Well Doc 😮😲
It may, there is a hefty spring behind the cartridges.

Hi Will, Thanks for your continued support...Doc
Hello. What exact brand of ammo did you use for the 1879? Where can I find it?
Hello Sir, I made mine up from individual components, Starline brass, Swiss BP, and the bullets shown at 1:40
Using black powder?
Hi Paul, Yes, black powder for this video, but have also used smokeless in the past.
I have an 1879 and 1883. I have not had them out to fire yet. Searching for background and publications for more infor
