Matters where. If it’s actually in the corners, this isn’t as big of a problem as you might imagine. It would still be a huge wreck, but the vast majority of street courses have a runoff and tires (usually double rowed and unanchored to the ground) to hit
@Pensfan5919 he was pretty cool. I wad maybe 7 or 8 at the time and my dad and I were walking up to go to the bathroom then all of a sudden my dad grabbed me and was like Mr. Petty would you mind signing my sons shirt? And there was Kyle walking up behind us and he did sign it talked for a few minutes and said have a good night and enjoy the race
Tire smoke is a classic symptom of a stuck/hung throttle. Such a scary thing to witness as a fan too. That Truex wreck actually BROKE the safer barrier. Let me correct you on something though- safer barrier would NOT have made the Hamlin wreck worse, it actually would have been better. Tires actually cause the car to rebound backwards, sometimes quite violently which can cause injuries. It can also catch the car awkwardly and bring it to a very abrupt stop. A safer barrier would have brought the car to a stop without the rebound effect transferring back into the car and driver as he would have hit it and likely spun around after, but without the force transferring back into the car. I saw the Setzer crash live and we were all praying we hadn’t seen yet another death. It was a relief when he climbed out ok.
Let me correct you, safer barrier direct hit, still worse in raw Gs and plenty of crashes have show how much a safer barrier can launch a car out. But hey keep pretending.

A hung throttle is extremely scary. It happened to me in a 410 Sprint car earlier this year. I got really lucky that I realized it was stuck and managed to spin the car out in the corner before I got to the wall.
I wouldn’t spin the car out with a hung throttle that almost always ends badly, first hung throttle ever happened street racing at 17 I learned a very valuable lesson with hung throttles. The moment you realize your throttle is hung (usually under braking) just kill the motor, brake and down shift…….Hung Throttles aren’t scary it’s riding them out
@@starscream9683 Well street racing is a whole different story than Dirt track oval racing. That wall comes quick. Spinning it out was just the first thing I could do before the wall, especially cause i was already trying to turn for the corner.
You can't even imagine just how bad an impact is with a stuck throttle is really like behind the wheel. Missing in this is in fact Jimmie Johnson at Watkins Glens in 2000, along with Brett Bodine at Michigan in 2003, and Brett Raymer at Daytona in 2009.
One of the first things i was taught when i started racing was how important the kill switch is. Every racecar has a mandatory kill switch, but drivers never put enough thought into how important it is. A lot of racecars even have them mounted on the steering wheel.
on dirt tracks locally they tell if your throttle hangs up, steer for the infield and put the clutch to the floor.. but we never carried the kind of speed they do in NASCAR
5:11 I wonder how many g's Brad Smith's impact was? I'm not sure when, but at least 25 years ago a lot of drivers modified their gas pedal with a bar that they could pull back using their toes. Most drivers used it only for road courses, but the smart drivers always had it on.
What's scary is Cody Ware's crash at texas, is that he's running down pit road and rick allen saying watch out makes me cringe because you know the crews can't hear the tv broadcast.
Yes. They instituted it late in the 2000 season after the fatal crashes of Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin Jr. I also can't quite remember if it was before or after Tony Roper's wreck in the Truck Series.
If you want to talk about hung throttles you need to look into the NASCAR modifieds in the 80’s Corky Cookman , Richie Evans & others. Probably won’t find any videos.
I'll be honest, I don't like when people include older ARCA clips in NASCAR compilations. I know everyone's gonna be all like "NASCAR owns ARCA now," but they didn't when those incidents happened, so to me, they don't count. But that's just a "me" problem. I know people are gonna give me crap for it, but that's just how I feel.
In my opinion, arca was similar enough to nascar as to where it just doesn't make much sense not to include it just because it wasn't explicitly nascar.
Totally agree. It's called lazy homework. Just not enough effort into finding NASCAR related content to go with the title. Plus, some of these crashes are the result of no brakes, and not stuck throttles. Sheesh.
There is safety items in place if this happens. One is a driver activated switch on steering wheel. All driver has to do is push button and engine shuts down. The other is a vaccum switch that is in line with brake if parameters dont align the engine shuts off automaticly.
Ok sorry if i this sounds rude. Or uneducated cause i dont relly know how these cars operate. But back when these cars were full stick. Couldnt you push the clutch? Or was the shear shock in the crashes preventing them from doing such. Or any other reasons this wouldnt be possible.
I would argue complete brake failure or steering failure is far more scary. With a struck throttle if your quick of whit enough you can hit the kill switch.
Yet it made zero difference in 99% of the hung throttles at road courses in nascar hung throttles. Johnson was pure point in case. He cleared the whole fucking sand trap.
I'm not the most educated on Nascar, but as far as I know they have 4-speed manual transmissions. Is it not possible to pull the clutch and let the engine rev free from the tires? Yeah that's bad for the engine, but I assume they have limiters.
You've clearly never driven a race car. In most cases, it happens so quickly that by the time you realize the throttle is hung, it's too late. That's why those steering wheel kill switched were useless. The only kill switch that I have seen work is one made by Brunnhoezl that is an inline switch on the throttle linkage. So if it hags up the switch closes and instantly kills power.
Imagine getting your throttle hung at the Chicago street course
Imagine not realising how many other racing series around the world run street tracks without issue. Maybe nascar needs to figure their shit out
could be brutal with how square it is

the super speedway races make me so anxious 💀

How was KP?

@Pensfan5919 all the Petty family are good people. At least every time I've ever ran across them at the track
The amount of physical discipline, stress, and skill to be a NASCAR driver is seriously under appreciated and needs to be respected
someone's gonna get mad about that and cry that "its just turning left 2000 times" despite nascar having like 6 road courses now
Motorsport in general
The racing community understands racing... Most sports fans can't understand much more then a ball and points... Nascar takes extreme talent.

Cody Ware strangled his steering wheel a little too hard
Brad Smith actually did an interview talking about the talladega crash on the super cars today TV channel. Really interesting.
Yeah I saw that
it's the dude from nfjj
NHMS just had a thing for hanging throttles in 2000 I guess. 2 fatal and 1 non fatal
The Jimmie Johnson, Busch series hung-throttle wreck was probably the worst I've seen...!
8:06 And ask Kevin Harvick how much he liked that feature. 😉
What about preece modified testing crash? Stuck throttle, ran wall over like a ramp and went over fence??
where to find?
Do they have some kind of emergency kill switch for the engine?
Yes
Yes. They instituted it late in the 2000 season after the fatal crashes of Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin Jr. I also can't quite remember if it was before or after Tony Roper's wreck in the Truck Series.

Thats how Kenny Irwin Jr died at new Hampshire i believe.
And Adam Petty at the same track
once at a dirt sprint car race a car flew off the track into the back of someones truck
Throttle is such a cool word. Throooooooottle trottle. Nah but seriously these wrecks are savage

Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin, both at the smae track and same turn, resulting in the worst possible outcome.
kinda ironic that your channel name is OnTheGas and you made this video 😂

is it not possible to push in the clutch and take it out of gear?
Or have a kill switch. It's an easy thing to do.
1:30 wow no wall
what happened to the killswitch buttons that were installed after kenny irwins crash ??
Probably got rid of them after Harvick ranted on them one race
@@silentbob3208 Wasnt that because it was easy to hit and cut the car off mid race? Ive heard about it a few times outside of harvick.
My dad was at that Arca race at mobile
I've had this happen on more than one occasion. Push the clutch then brake and let the motor go. A motor is worth way less than your well being.
