Nice idea. If you don't want to have to turn the wheel as much to steer, I'd suggest 2 thing. A smaller wheel - less diameter means less turning for a full rotation. And a smaller cross bar where it attaches to the motor, basically for the same reason as the smaller wheel.
Nice job man! I think if we are all watching this video we are pretty much in the same boat lol on a budget boat build lol 😆 I have a 10ft SEARS John boat look a like lol that I picked up for 150 bucks and by the end of the summer I was able to score a sweet deal on a 2006 4 stroke Johnson 4hp motor that was in excellent shape! Paid 450 for it !! Starts up with two pulls or 1 .. but I need to add a steering wheel already that’s this weekends goal lol
That motor is so light that you could use a bike cable and make a mini-modern system for it. If it is too light, you could double-up the cable set for more strength. And it would work when tilted, too.
I would suggest shortening the rods on the motor for one and install a small wheel on the shaft inside the box to give the steering a higher steering ratio. That way you don't need to move the wheel so many times.
Great thinking,I am going to steal some of these ideas .haha Thanks.Have you considered 3 or 4" pulleys on the steering wheel? It would require less turning to operate
I don't know the exact measurements. I used a sheet of plywood and traced around the shape of the bottom of the boat. It's curved on the front sides and at all four corners, so if you want a good fit, tracing it is the best way to do it
Do you mean a drivers license? I'm in Virginia, so I looked it up: If the motor is 10hp or more, you need to take a boater's safety course. If you're under 14 years old, you can't drive it at all. 14 or 15, you need to take the course. Since this is less than 10hp, I'm good.
Nice idea.

That was the best video I've ever seen
You know it.

You're a genius 🤯 I'll do that to my mariner 4.
Genius is a stretch, but I do like to figure stuff out :)
Thanks for the vid man! I want to use a steering wheel for my kayak trolling motor. Great explanation
Great work Rob.
Very creative - looks fun
Definitely a good time. Everyone who's been out on it has had a blast.
Switch to pulleys and use small turn buckles to adjust tension.
Very good... That's exactly what I need... Great!!
Nice. Glad you found it helpful
Awesome idea man, been looking for solutions to implement on my kayak
Awesome job!!!
😎🚣
Straight up brilliant !!
Great idea
Very clever!
be cool to mount a tractor ball on that wheel thanks so much for sharing this is going to work for my canoe perfectly
Yeah, that's a good idea. The possibilities with the IE5 are endless.
@@RobShambaugh thanks for sharing!
Genius

No, the amount of turning is pretty minimal. I'm definitely not saying my ideas are the best, so if you can make things better... go for it!
awesome!
Thank you!!!!!!
Coolest one ever.
What was your measurements for the floor?? I have one and I have too put a floor in mine!!! Thanks!!

I got sea sick just watching this.
genius
smart!
Reverse?
do you have to have a license to have the boat with all the upgrades?

Great! what size tire is that?
I think it's either 7 or 8"
cool thanks!
Attach that system to a swivel seat.
Poor man's boat lol
and he is recording from his garage, boat is on a trailer with a nice truck in the back! I dont have any of those.
Ike you said it
