  • It's Saturday 14th September and it's a glorious sunny day.
Ditchling has been inhabited for thousands of years and steeped in history. The beacon was an Iron Age Fort and has a number of barrows and we go there to let Ky have a run. First we walk around the village to look at some of the amazing places including St Margaret's Church and the former home of Anne of Cleves. Wings Place was formerly called Ditchling Garden Manor and first appears in records from 1095. It was given to Anne of Cleves by Henry VIII as part of their annulment settlement in 1540 and said to be one of the finest timber framed buildings in Britain. It is a Grade I Listed building. Then we found an Art Trail and looked in one of the houses and gardens, with paintings and sculptures in the garden, which was really interesting. We then had lunch before heading to Ditchling Beacon, a 59 acre nature reserve managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust. It's so beautiful up there with panoramic views and the highest point in Sussex.
I hope you'll enjoy this one and if you do please leave a comment as I love to read them all.

A nice exploration of Ditchling - I did not know the old cottage opposite the church was owned by Anne of Cleves but have always admired it. The cows are usually on the other side of the fence up at Ditchling Beacon!!

Thanks for the video Lynn, another place I haven't been to for years. Like the music it reminded me of the the theme to The Detectorists.

Such wonderful views from the Beacon and of the village where, incidentally, Vera Lynn lived and is buried.

Oh yes Sue, the views are breath-taking. My father was a butcher in Ditchling at one time and used to serve Vera in his shop. She lived to a ripe age; lovely lady. Thank you for watching Sue 🥰

Charming video and such happy music, too! I love the sculpture garden idea, and the art in the house was really good! Indeed, the view from Ditchling Beacon is superb. I camped there three years ago, just to the right of that runner, and to wake up and see that panorama from my tent was one of life's great joys. Great to see this location again, and Ky enjoying an ice cream!

I'm so glad you enjoyed watching Andrew and thanks for leaving your kind words. There were many houses with open art but we didn't have time, sadly, to look at them all. It was lovely to see the sculptures in the garden and the art; very expensive though. The Beacon is so beautiful and I can only imagine that sight when you woke from your tent, how lovely to do that. Thanks for watching 🥰

@@fionahammond9396 Good morning Fiona, thank you for coming with us on this visit to Ditchling, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. We did, it was such a beautiful day with a mixture of all sorts to keep us busy. I loved the Church, it was so peaceful in there with hymns playing, getting ready for a wedding shortly after our visit. Those views are so amazing up there and I dream about being there sometimes, it's one of my favourite walks on a sunny day. Ky loves it too; he can run like a greyhound up there with no worries. Oh and yes, a treat to end with 😄 Enjoy your day Fiona 🥰 xx

Good evening Lynn, Richard & Ky. We've been out most of the day, so only just watched you latest. I don't know exactly where Ditchling is, but it's got a lot of history surrounding it. That timber framed Tudor house was quite magnificent. Those art figures were okay, but lots of parks and gardens are doing similar things. Some better than others. That high ground you went to gave some wonderful views. Can you see the coast from there?
We took advantage of the final day of the Test Valley Rambler bus, which travels between Andover and Romsey, taking in many of the tourist attractions. Blue Star are operating the bus, funded by South Western Railway. Today was the final day of this Sundays only service, so we opted for a few hours at Mottisfont. The weather was good for the most part, but got a little chilly in the last hour. Our bus passes are accepted for these journeys, so it makes for a cheap, hassle free day out. This was my 4th journey with them. Absolutely wonderful driver, when you consider the narrow lanes and villages he has to negotiate.

Oh it sounds like you've had a lovely day Lionel and Mary, I've not been to Mottifont but a friend of mine made a video there and it looks lovely.
Oh yes, Ditchling is steeped in history and the architecture there is something else. There are many Tudor houses in the village but my favourites were the tall one and the one given to Anne of Cleves by Henry VIII called Wings Place. The sculptures were for sale and in the thousands. Not for me! Ditchling Beacon is the highest point you can go to in Sussex and yes, magnificent views from the North Downs right down to the sea. Quite wonderful. Thank you for watching. Enjoy the rest of your holiday. We shall miss meeting up with you as we are going to Wiltshire this week
