In 1972, Before the Fence was there, I used to go to Rose Hill and visit Duane & Berry's Graves, There used to be a 2 foot high Marble Cup on top of Duane's Headstone, where people would smoke a Joint and put the Roach in it, It was full, Then some asshole stole it, then they put up a fence, I used to sit on the grass hill next to the Graves and Play My Dobro Guitar and ask Duane for Guidance, I did this at least once a Month, He gave me my wish, as i went home , i seemed to play better, I Thank Duane for this, his spirit was there, Cousin Figel
Thanks for the video, I don't mean to step on your toes, But when Duane was playing in Muscle Shoals, Jai Johanny Johanson, Was actually the First Member of what was to be the Allman Brothers, Jaimo, met Duane there, then Duane hooked up with Dickey , Butch, Berry, through a person, they all got together in the Shoals and Jammed, Duane was so impressed with the music they connected with, He Called Gregg in California and said, Little Brother get down here Quick, I got a band together, I want you to sing and Play Organ, Gregg sais I only Played a Hammond Twice, are you crazy? Duane said Just Get Here Now, Gregg was actually the Last Member to join the Band, This is History, Cousin Figel
The Allman Brothers never recorded a bad song! Jaimoe is from my hometown & I keep trying to get someone to help put a festival together in his honor. Maybe one day it will happen. My favorite song of all is One Way Out. Loved Gregg!! 💙

If you leave a ceramic mushroom, the group that tends the Graves will put it in the rock garden in the back. Dickie has committed to burial in the plot, probably Jaimoe too. They're the only band I'm aware of that's buried together.
Enjoyed your video. Living in Georgia, I get to Rose Hill Cemetery every few years to pay respects. Got pictures in the early '80's when Duane and Berry's graves stood out all by themselves. No fence around them, and have sat on Duane's grave and picked with other guitar buddies. Nothing like it in the world. Incidentally, the words written on the two original grave markers is worth searching on the internet. There's also a mushroom on the side of Duane's head marker that seldom is seen. Was surprised you didn't show the location where they stood in the cemetery on the back cover of their first album. You were close to it but never pointed it out. Also, would've been good to have shown Elizabeth Reed's marker too, which it real close to the 4 Brothers. If you're standing up at the four graves, and have your back to the markers, straight down the hill to the road, the train tracks are parallel to the road and just beyond the train tracks is the Ocmulgee River. Anyhow, once you reach the road, take a left and go less that 50 feet and the first marker on your left is Elizabeth Jones Reed. Nice area to play guitar too. Supposedly Little Martha was born there while hanging out playing guitar. And of course In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. All instrumental, and not knowing what to call the song, they named it after the grave marker where they hung out. Macon is a great place with the Allman Brothers history for anyone wanting to take it in. Don't miss The Big House either, now a museum, which is only a few blocks from Rose Hill. Also, the front of their first album, that shot was taken on College St. not far from the cemetery. And, the location where Duane and Berry lost their lives on motorcycles is not too far away either. Those two locations were real close together, almost a year apart. I haven't made it to Rose Hill since Gregg and Butch have died, and it amazes me how much the area has changed within the cemetery in watching your video. But then, my first visit there was in 1982, 40 years ago. I shot a whole roll of Kodak film in that cemetery my first visit. It's arguably the coolest resting place you'll ever witness. RIP to the greatest band the US has ever produced. IMHO

You know to me this is probably my top grave to visit. I love all the others or I wouldn’t have done them, but this is Gregg and some of the other band together. I love the allmans and they were a huge part in my life growing up. I got to see them live once and it was awesome. I think right now to me it can’t be topped but one day you and I will top that. Thanks for watching and the nice comments is what keeps me going.
Unfortunately the fence was erected by the family members because fans were getting to crazy. My first visit there was in 2002 before the fence was put up. So I have some nice photos when it was just Duane and Berry. I returned there on April, 22, 2019 with my family. As we were leaving Chank Middleton drove up in a truck. He was very kind. He opened the gate and allowed my family and myself into the area. And I took some photos including one of Chank and myself and my family as we stood next to Gregg’s gravestone. It was a special moment for me. I’ll never forget his kindness to me and my family.
Yes, I was saddened to learn he had passed away. He was a genuinely kind person and a great friend to many people I’m sure. He was certainly Gregg’s true friend .

A visit is to Rose Hill is on my bucket list. My 1965 visit with Duane, in Lake City, Fl. is forever the greatest memory of my life. He was gone way too soon, and greatly affected our family.
I'm a huge Allman Brothers fan. I was somewhat surprised that you went right from their masterpiece album Live at Filmore East in 1971 to Gregg's marriage to Cher in 1975 without mentioning the tragic death of his brother Duane in a motorcycle accident in October 1971. The band and Gregg were devastated but they forged on. I still enjoyed your video tho. Beautiful cemetary.
Thank you for posting this. I'm a huge fan and I also enjoy the music of their sons, the Allman-Betts Band which includes Duane Betts, Devin Allman, Berry Oakley Jr., and sometimes Lamar Williams Jr. The ABB sent the standard for Southern Rock. God Bless!!!
Back Roads: thanks for posting. Reese Wynans(Keyboardist for Stevie Ray Vaughan & Joe Bonamassa) participated in the jam session that would become the Allman Brothers Band. I saw the Allman Brothers at the Tower Theater(Upper Darby ,Pa.) in 1989 with a blind guitarist in the band Jonny Neel. I love the song "Midnight Rider"(ABB version). I guess Elizabeth Reed is buried in the same cemetery as Gregg, right? They saw her name on the tombstone when they jammed there. Cheers! I thought Gregg's album he did with Cher was titled "A Man and His Woman".?

I visited there for the first time the day before you arrived as I was in town for GABBA Fest. Very cool cemetery as i walked most of it. The group of graves behind you at the beginning of your video was a Confederate troop gravesite. There is also General Doar as well as the person who finished the race to complete the western railroad first. Of course, visiting the ABB gravesite was the highlight. They had to put gates up as a few people stole angel vases from the graves (in my opinion POS and not true fans of the band). Thanks for sharing.
I'm 38 years old and was blessed enough to see the last days (Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes era) of the Allman Brothers band well over a dozen times. I must have stopped by the Rosehill cemetery a hundred times over the years to pay my respects. The band literally changed my life. Thank you for taking the time to document a piece of rock and roll history. Crossroads, seem to come and go .......
Same here. I’m also 38 and I saw the ABB at music mid town in Atlanta in 2000 when I was 15 and it changed my life forever. That turned me on to widespread panic and the dead and I started going to concerts all over the south east. I still look at that as one of the greatest experiences of my life.

Thanks for mentioning Muddy Waters and his inspirational friendship with Gregg. I saw Gregg Allman play at a Muddy Waters Concert in a very small venue in Atlanta, Georgia in the Spring of 1978. It was an important historical turning point, because it was reportedly his first performance after some “time off” due to his reported “legal controversies”.
In Memory of Elizabeth Reed was my favorite Allman brothers song. I named my daughter after this song. The grave that they got the idea from has our last name on it. They had many good songs! Great video! Thanks!
Excellent video! You did a very honest and heartfelt job on this video. I remember hearing the Allman Brothers Band through out the 1970's here in Southern California rock radio in those days. The song that Gregg Allman wrote in my opinion that showcases the whole Gregg Allman history is "On Coming Traffic"

Whipping Post, I lived on Ingleside Dr( 2 blocks away) in 1983, you could go down to Dywane"s grave and back then the poptops can off the beer cans, there'd be 100s laying around.

Like most of us Greg had his issues in the seventies and early eighties, but he was a righteous guy. I had a shop in Buckhead Georgia and Greg came in really liking a tan leather jacket we had. I looked around for Duane, who was my guitar god, but Greg was alone. I thought the jacket was a little small on him, but I told him that I would give it to him at cost (50% off) if he would wear it on his next album cover, half-jokingly. Didn't think about it again until I looked at the back of the live Filmore album. Regarded as one of the best live rock recordings in history. He was wearing it. I just think he liked that jacket! By the way the band is laughing because Duane is hiding an eight ball in his hands as the photographer came up suddenly! Gregs genius was hidden at first because of Duane and Dickey, but finally emerged through the years.

I got close pictures of both Duane and Berry's graves in the graveyard across I-16 from the Macon Coliseum. You are welcome to use them. At some time past my visit, they put up a fence so it wouldn't become a tourist destination. Way back in the bar band days, Greg would come into the Whipping Post in Daytona and jam with us.
Favorite Albums. Love "Hittin the Note" especially how Gregg sung "Heart of Stone" and "My Only True Friend" from Southern Blood. Love everything he has sung or played.
I worked around the office side of entertainment from 1981 to 1992 in San Francisco Bay Area. For much of the 1990s, Gregory lived in Marin County, California, . I met him by coincidence. It turns out we both had birthdays in December and he was a couple years older.. and I also grew up in the South. I write lyrics or poems but not musical scores.. I shared with him some of my lyrics and ask him for music ideas.. he immediately came up with a blues tune for my words... He also was interested in another poem I wrote.. he gave me a phone number and I was to get back in touch with him when he got back from a tour... I did try later, but at the time he had become very ill and needed a liver transplant. And he eventually moved back to Georgia and I never regained contact for the song he wanted to create with my poetry.... I was very sad when I heard he had passed....and missed out on a chance to set my poem to music... from a well-known musician...
I was just remembering the day I met Gregg in St. Augustine in September 2015. We had a great chat. Mostly me chatting. It felt like we had known each other our whole lives. That day was a gift from God. RIP Greggory.
My 2 piece opened for Greg in Savannah Music Fest 2006.He was great to me he was talking my ear off because i am from Sanford, Florida one of his fave towns!
Thanks for posting this , I remember the Allman Joys playing at a club called The Rainy Daze in St.Louis back in the day , another band I remember playing there was The Moody Blues. I recently after about 25 years bought a new turn table and hooked up my Onkyo system and the first song I put on was In memory of Elizabeth Redd from live at the Fillmore "It put a hell of a smile on my face", and as I type this if I recall correctly she is also a resident of that cemetery. The only band I have seen three times and also saw Greg when he was solo.

Excellent, excellent post. Great commentary on the band's history. Used to go to Macon in the 1990s in between yearly jaunts to NY for the Beacon runs in March. Loved to spend time at Rose Hill. Used to throw Frisbees and see if we could hit the passing train as it went by the river. Thanks for the post. Brought back a lot of memories. Haven't been to Macon since '98. Thinking about returning for old times sake.
Loved The Allman Brothers Band. I saw them a couple times and Gregg Allman twice too. I went to see the Enlightened Rouges Tour, even though only 500.tickets were sold they played a 21/2 hour show. My favorite song is These Days on the Laid Back album. Thanks man great video.
Well Dickie Betts is still alive and an important original member, he sang many songs with the band and is an extremely talented guitarist. Live at the Filmore is my favorite album, love too many of their songs to choose a favorite. RIP Gregg ❤

Yes, Trucks is a good player but the songs that Dickie has written are filled with such melody AND harmony. The harmony in the songs of the ABB is what set them apart from other bands and that harmony came from Dickey Betts. Dickey didn't play a million notes like some players but he is one of the most melodic players of all time. Suggest that you listen to all of the instrumentals that he wrote and then compare those to Instrumental Illness on Hittin' The Note; it's a great tune but very obvious that the harmony that Dickey provided was missing
My buddy John Prestia here in Nashville wrote songs with Dickey and they wrote "No One to Run With", and said after 10 years, finally convinced Gregg to record it and put in the playlist.....lol
Man does this really make me feel weird seeing their graves. Being a life long fan and seeing all the shows and now seeing them in the ground somehow just feels wrong. I know its life but who else just felt really uneasy seeing them this way, guess so used to seeing singing and playing its just sad.
Just visited Macon back in December 2022. Went to the Big House, Capricorn Studios, and the cemetery. Gregg, Duane, Barry Oakley, Butch Trucks and Mrs Allman are all buried in the “family” plot. Thank you to Tommy Talton (who played with Gregg) who is VIP treatment while being in Macon
The Allman Brothers went to the same school that I did - Seabreeze Senior High. I was class of 75. Our official song that year was Blue Sky, an homage to our fellow alumni.

RIP chank too.
Great video! I've been to Rose Hill Cemetery many times to see the Allman Brothers. They say the stone of Elizabeth Reed is somewhere close by. I've never come across it. Since Gregg's passing, the Cemetery has frequent visitors. Every time I've been there there are others coming and going.
Head up the road that runs along the RR Tracks. You will see Liz Reed on the left and eventually across the ravine is the Bond Memorial. To get to the Bond Memorial, you have to head up the hill past the grave of Little Martha then swing to your right to get to the Bond Memorial. Some jerk has stolen parts of the Bond Memorial. Idiots abound!
I was there recently and most of it sadly was so overgrown!! But enjoyed seeing their graves which are well taken care of. Of course visited the museum also!!!

I was there back in the mid 90's when it was just Duane and Oakley buried there. Was no fence then. Was at night.Drank a couple of beers and smoked one.I was lucky enough to have seen them 3 times in Birmingham Alabama back in the 90's.

Originally there were angels at the foot of Duane and Berry. Some jerks stole them. So eventually Candy installed the fence to keep the rif raff out.

I was somewhat surprised that you went right from their masterpiece album Live at Filmore East in 1971 to Gregg's marriage to Cher in 1975 without mentioning the tragic death of his brother Duane in a motorcycle accident in October 1971. The band and Gregg were devastated but they forged on. I still enjoyed your video tho. Beautiful cemetary.
And he and Cher had a son who now lives in Clearwater Fla or that area. He has a music store and has his own band.

Back Roads: thanks for posting. Reese Wynans(Keyboardist for Stevie Ray Vaughan & Joe Bonamassa) participated in the jam session that would become the Allman Brothers Band. I saw the Allman Brothers at the Tower Theater(Upper Darby ,Pa.) in 1989 with a blind guitarist in the band Jonny Neel. I love the song "Midnight Rider"(ABB version). I guess Elizabeth Reed is buried in the same cemetery as Gregg, right? They saw her name on the tombstone when they jammed there. Cheers!

I visited there for the first time the day before you arrived as I was in town for GABBA Fest. Very cool cemetery as i walked most of it. The group of graves behind you at the beginning of your video was a Confederate troop gravesite. There is also General Doar as well as the person who finished the race to complete the western railroad first. Of course, visiting the ABB gravesite was the highlight. They had to put gates up as a few people stole angel vases from the graves (in my opinion POS and not true fans of the band). Thanks for sharing.

I'm 38 years old and was blessed enough to see the last days (Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes era) of the Allman Brothers band well over a dozen times. I must have stopped by the Rosehill cemetery a hundred times over the years to pay my respects. The band literally changed my life. Thank you for taking the time to document a piece of rock and roll history. Crossroads, seem to come and go .......
Same here. I’m also 38 and I saw the ABB at music mid town in Atlanta in 2000 when I was 15 and it changed my life forever. That turned me on to widespread panic and the dead and I started going to concerts all over the south east. I still look at that as one of the greatest experiences of my life.

Thanks for mentioning Muddy Waters and his inspirational friendship with Gregg. I saw Gregg Allman play at a Muddy Waters Concert in a very small venue in Atlanta, Georgia in the Spring of 1978. It was an important historical turning point, because it was reportedly his first performance after some “time off” due to his reported “legal controversies”.

In Memory of Elizabeth Reed was my favorite Allman brothers song. I named my daughter after this song. The grave that they got the idea from has our last name on it. They had many good songs! Great video! Thanks!
Excellent video! You did a very honest and heartfelt job on this video. I remember hearing the Allman Brothers Band through out the 1970's here in Southern California rock radio in those days. Whipping Post, I lived on Ingleside Dr( 2 blocks away) in 1983, you could go down to Dywane"s grave and back then the poptops can off the beer cans, there'd be 100s laying around.

Like most of us Greg had his issues in the seventies and early eighties, but he was a righteous guy. I had a shop in Buckhead Georgia and Greg came in really liking a tan leather jacket we had. I looked around for Duane, who was my guitar god, but Greg was alone. I thought the jacket was a little small on him, but I told him that I would give it to him at cost (50% off) if he would wear it on his next album cover, half-jokingly. Didn't think about it again until I looked at the back of the live Filmore album. Regarded as one of the best live rock recordings in history. He was wearing it. I just think he liked that jacket! By the way the band is laughing because Duane is hiding an eight ball in his hands as the photographer came up suddenly! Gregs genius was hidden at first because of Duane and Dickey, but finally emerged through the years.

I got close pictures of both Duane and Berry's graves in the graveyard across I-16 from the Macon Coliseum. You are welcome to use them. At some time past my visit, they put up a fence so it wouldn't become a tourist destination. Way back in the bar band days, Greg would come into the Whipping Post in Daytona and jam with us.

I worked around the office side of entertainment from 1981 to 1992 in San Francisco Bay Area. For much of the 1990s, Gregory lived in Marin County, California, . I met him by coincidence. It turns out we both had birthdays in December and he was a couple years older.. and I also grew up in the South. I write lyrics or poems but not musical scores.. I shared with him some of my lyrics and ask him for music ideas.. he immediately came up with a blues tune for my words... He also was interested in another poem I wrote.. he gave me a phone number and I was to get back in touch with him when he got back from a tour... I did try later, but at the time he had become very ill and needed a liver transplant. And he eventually moved back to Georgia and I never regained contact for the song he wanted to create with my poetry.... I was very sad when I heard he had passed....and missed out on a chance to set my poem to music... from a well-known musician...
'Ramblin' Man' is by far, my favorite Allman Brothers song, with that awesome guitar riff by Dickey Betts.

I was just remembering the day I met Gregg in St. Augustine in September 2015. We had a great chat. Mostly me chatting. It felt like we had known each other our whole lives. That day was a gift from God. RIP Greggory.

Thanks for posting this , I remember the Allman Joys playing at a club called The Rainy Daze in St.Louis back in the day , another band I remember playing there was The Moody Blues. I recently after about 25 years bought a new turn table and hooked up my Onkyo system and the first song I put on was In memory of Elizabeth Redd from live at the Fillmore "It put a hell of a smile on my face", and as I type this if I recall correctly she is also a resident of that cemetery. The only band I have seen three times and also saw Greg when he was solo.
Spent last Thursday at Rose Hill,it's a mystical place.

in between yearly jaunts to NY for the Beacon runs in March. Loved to spend time at Rose Hill. Used to throw Frisbees and see if we could hit the passing train as it went by the river. Thanks for the post. Brought back a lot of memories. Haven't been to Macon since '98. Thinking about returning for old times sake.

Loved The Allman Brothers Band. I saw them a couple times and Gregg Allman twice too. I went to see the Enlightened Rouges Tour, even though only 500.tickets were sold they played a 21/2 hour show. My favorite song is These Days on the Laid Back album. Thanks man great video.

Well Dickie Betts is still alive and an important original member, he sang many songs with the band and is an extremely talented guitarist. Live at the Filmore is my favorite album, love too many of their songs to choose a favorite. RIP Gregg ❤

Yes, Trucks is a good player but the songs that Dickie has written are filled with such melody AND harmony. The harmony in the songs of the ABB is what set them apart from other bands and that harmony came from Dickey Betts. Dickey didn't play a million notes like some players but he is one of the most melodic players of all time. Suggest that you listen to all of the instrumentals that he wrote and then compare those to Instrumental Illness on Hittin' The Note; it's a great tune but very obvious that the harmony that Dickey provided was missing

My buddy John Prestia here in Nashville wrote songs with Dickey and they wrote "No One to Run With", and said after 10 years, finally convinced Gregg to record it and put in the playlist.....lol
Man does this really make me feel weird seeing their graves. Being a life long fan and seeing all the shows and now seeing them in the ground somehow just feels wrong. I know its life but who else just felt really uneasy seeing them this way, guess so used to seeing singing and playing its just sad.
Greg lived in Novato CA where I live. I used to see him hanging out in the local bars playing pool. friendly guy great musician

Just visited Macon back in December 2022. Went to the Big House, Capricorn Studios, and the cemetery. Gregg, Duane, Barry Oakley, Butch Trucks and Mrs Allman are all buried in the “family” plot. Thank you to Tommy Talton (who played with Gregg) who is VIP treatment while being in Macon

RIP chank too.
Great video! I've been to Rose Hill Cemetery many times to see the Allman Brothers. They say the stone of Elizabeth Reed is somewhere close by. I've never come across it. Since Gregg's passing, the Cemetery has frequent visitors. Every time I've been there there are others coming and going.
Head up the road that runs along the RR Tracks. You will see Liz Reed on the left and eventually across the ravine is the Bond Memorial. To get to the Bond Memorial, you have to head up the hill past the grave of Little Martha then swing to your right to get to the Bond Memorial.
Some jerk has stolen parts of the Bond Memorial. Idiots abound!
