The drums are smokin. But that percussive breakdown in the middle is actually Clay Gober on bass. The drums are accenting what he's doing. That spine thumping rhythm in the front of the mix is bass. The drum solo comes later near the end.
I was fortunate enough to see Return to Forever live with that lineup in a large "acoustically perfect" concert hall. It was one of their last concerts together. There were moments I wanted to jump out of my seat from the energy released in the music. Just an amazing experience. I later met Al DiMiola twice, once at a guitar clinic and after an incredible solo show where he took the time to meet fans. Really nice guy.
I went to the reunion tour, and it was good. Seen Al a couple times and the Corea bands. I AL was one of first guitar heros, love his playing and first three solo records.
This is like Polyphia tackling a whole new genre of music. And somehow they made it work so well with instrumentals like the bass guitar and drums. I'm hoping that both Clays make a playthrough of this song like they have with older songs like OD.
