Fun fact about the flag, the yellow circle actually represents the moon, as opposed to the sun. The blue field represents the Pacific Ocean.
Now for a longer story. A while ago, I stumbled across a bridge in Palau that caught my attention, both in its design as well as its name, the Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge. Apparently, the previous bridge collapsed in 1996, unfortunately taking a few people with it, along with cutting off road, water and electricity services. Palau didn’t have the money rebuild the bridge, so a Japanese company stepped in and built them a new one, for free. The new bridge was completed in 2002. It’s a cable-stayed bridge, which is interesting, because while it’s not as big and fancy as the ones found in places like Japan, China and South Korea, it still looks quite tall and grand, and stands out in a place like Palau.
The former bridge, the one that collapsed, actually once held the record for the longest “balanced cantilever prestressed concrete box girder bridge” in the world. Yeah I don’t know what that means either, but it shows how important it is to have that connection between the islands.
Anyway, I just thought that was an interesting little story.
