Thank you for CofG video. My grand uncle was a Fireman, George Martin on the Nancy Hanks which I rode as a youngster in 1958. He was on the final run of the Nancy Hanks April 30, 1971 before Amtrak.
My first train ride, I can remember was on the CoG Seminole, from Americus, Georgia to Chicago in 1953. This train was a local with a 13 car consist of which half was head end baggage, mail and express and the rest heavyweight Pullman. The ride on the Seminole was a bit slow and noisy, but exciting.
By the time I learned about The Central Of Georgia Railway, their E7s, used on The Nancy Hanks and Man 'O' War were already painted in The Southern Railway System's black, white and gold, "Tuxedo," paint scheme, but were still lettered C of G. Videos of the action at Atlanta Terminal Station seem very rare and hard to come by, so I enjoyed seeing here, the early 1955 clip of the Atlanta and West Point and Central Of Georgia cab units up underneath the terminal.
FANTASTIC footage. Man , I would have loved to train chase with Dick back in the day . Most all of these locations are totally treed in today . Thanks for posting this rare footage !!
I remember the Man of War No. 20 and AWP-WofA No.38 the Cresent coming by Fairburn Ga in July 1969. No .20 by at 1018am and No 38 at 1038am. Both going by at a good clip.
Cool! I guess the Crescent came by Howell Tower, but did the Man of War go through there? I got to hang out at the tower with a friend a few times many years ago. You had such a distinct voice on the radio!

Rode Seminole Opelika to Columbus then Man O War Columbus to Atlanta then Piedmont Limited Atlanta to Opelika all in the same day. This was mid 1960's and the train connections were doable. Opelika 11 am Columbus 1:30 pm Atlanta 7:00 pm.
The Nancy ran to Savannah from Atlanta and Man of War ran from Atlanta to Columbus. What about the Cresant to New Orleans and the Orange Blossom Special to Miami.
The Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, GA has Georgia Railroad 1026 along with lots of other pieces of rolling stock. The Southern 2-8-2 4501 is at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. Both engines are in operating condition. The 4501 is in regular service on the Summer schedule. As far as structures etc., there's not much left in Atlanta. The city has done its best to wipe out any history that remains. You have to get away from town to find anything historical. Central of ga 509 is in Macon and in rough shape. The museum in savanna has another 2-8-0 and 0-6-0. There are lots of passenger cars preserved and still in use along with cabooses. I know there is one surviving rs3 at TVRM number 116.
Don't forget CofG 223, a simular sister to 509 but a bit longer. Her cosmetic restoration was finished somewhere in july of this year at the GSRM. she has been given marklamps, new paint work, a bell and whistle, and white lining on the running board and wheels. 349 is also another survivor of the CofG. It was a 4-4-0 that used TO be at the TVRM but was moved to a children's hospital.
I have heard, Central of Georgia backswood steamliner expresses went on for years after Amtrak was formed rather like the Rock Islands will a reasonable connection to the Birmingham Special, ( Washington DC- Atlanta- Birmingham ) the secnd Southern Railways steamliner continued by the Southern in the Amtrak era from Birmingham to Macon and Savanha in 1971-75 and like the Rock Islands Quad city rocket as some sort of broken down mixed train on dillapidated track with a 30-40mph speed limit restriction until 1980. Just a minor correction: It was called Nancy Hanks II, the first Nancy hanks ran in the late 1800's or early 1900's
