  • Air curtain technology created by a U-M startup, Taza Aya, can attach to the brim of a hard hat and deflect 99.8% of aerosols from reaching a worker’s face, potentially offering a new protection option for workers in industries where respiratory disease transmission is a concern. Independent, third-party testing of the device showed the effectiveness of a downward-flowing air curtain, curved to encircle the face, coming from nozzles at the hat’s brim a few inches from the face. That curtain is just one part of the device’s defense against pathogens.
"Our air curtain technology is precisely designed to protect wearers from airborne infectious pathogens, using treated air as a barrier in which any pathogens present have been inactivated so that they are no longer able to infect you if you breathe them in," said Herek Clack, a U-M associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, and a Taza Aya co-founder. "It's virtually unheard of-our level of protection against airborne germs, especially when combined with the improved ergonomics it also provides."

Pretty cool technology, but it does look like it takes 20 pounds of gear worth thousands of dollars to replace a 9 gram, $1 filtering facepiece respirator.
I'd be interesed in seeing detailed simulated workplace protection factor scores taken while moving or with cross breezes. An unshielded air curtain seems vulnerable to entrainment. But it is impressive how well it reportedly works.
I'd be interested if the air curtain design can work with existing 8 CFM PAPR blowers, or, if not, what the blower requirements are.

It does seem like this could be especially useful if it could be retrofitted to existing investments in equipment.
I'm still really interested in seeing test results that are representative of real world use as worn, while moving. Or doing tasks that one might need to take a respirator off for, which would include medical appointments, and eating in contaminated environments (where hopefully eating food that's exposed to that in contaminated air won't be infectious).

  • @kikijewell2967
    @kikijewell2967 Месяц назад +15

Very exciting! Though, I wonder about the venturi effect - where the flow of air draws surrounding air in. I'd add a low pressure air source for the venturi effect, so contaminated air isn't what's drawn in.
I'm also curious about the noise, especially through the ribbed, flexible tubing. High pressure air of any kind can be very noisy.

Depending how much space the plasma treatment takes: They can put a fairly large battery in the backpack shown at 1:00
No word on weight or maximum flow rate for breathing though.
Would not trust this for cycling. N95 masks work surprisingly well for cycling (due to the large surface area) as long as the temperature is far enough from the dew point (can't breathe when condensate clogs the pores).

How effective is it the way they kept showing it, with the intake/moror UNDER the closed jacket? Because it's extremely unlikely their tests were done with the intake vents completely covered. 🤦‍♀️
Also no information about the effects of wind gusts, and air coming from the back and sides, and how and if these disrupted the air curtain. No info given here about any testing in extreme heat, cold, very high or low humidity, and the effects from those environmental conditions, either.
Plus, is this like a PAPR, which doesn't filter the user's exhalations? "Protect only me not thee" is a horrible option when it comes to the Public Health side of PPE.
Don't forget, you have to either have very short hair OR bundle it into a bun under that hard hat style helmet, too - the latter is discomfort and annoyance that discourages use and probably wasn't considered as affecting use.
I'll keep wearing my P100 filter elastomeric respirator (mask).

Another tool in our pandemic toolbox. Because we know there will be another pandemic sometime in the future. And if the next one is deadly enough, anyone with half a brain will be looking for solutions to protect themselves (no matter how it looks).
Something else that's needed: a way to create protected spaces in small public venues like restaurants, pubs, etc. And classrooms, office cubicles, reception areas, etc. I saw some creative attempts with upgraded HVAC systems that included UV-C irradiation during the Covid Pandemic, but most venues did not have the funding to do much of anything. They just saw traffic dwindle to almost nothing, and, when possible, went to curbside pickup, home delivery, or other temporary measures.
Another global lockdown in the near future sounds catastrophic. We need some very creative & effective tech that can keep humanity up & running...
