      As a former sales grunt who experienced both low and high closing ratios, I found it infuriating that no matter how crappy the product was, and therefore hard to sell, like a credit card over the phone, or conversely how great it was, and easy to sell, management would always act as though they assumed every encounter was winnable. So, for instance, some guy comes into a store just to use the bathroom, and it turns into, "Why didn't you sell them X?" Less hyperbolic examples include, "Why aren't you aggressively approaching all the people assiduously avoiding eye contact because they either know what they want, or are just browsing?

    • @Deloooon
      @Deloooon 3 года назад +228

      Harry Garrett no, if he did that, it would show that the owner of the company only cares about the money he makes and the image of his company. it’s quite clear that most of these workers aren’t paid the most as compared to him and they definitely need to earn money for themselves and their family. just because a few not-really enthusiastic workers aren’t doing their job to their best doesn’t mean that they deserve being fired, after all they’re just doing what they are paid. on the other hand, the owner of the company is making millions, just because of a few bad apples in his company wouldn’t significantly reduce his profits so it wouldn’t really matter to him. if he did actually fire them it would just show that he isn’t very humanitarian and is just a greedy person, however if he promotes those who do a good job, it would show that he does indeed care about his workers and not just his profits.

      Harry Garrett well i disagree, i think that if most ceo’s and owners were like that, they would make a good business partner. if you keep rewarding those who do a good job, it would encourage those who aren’t working as hard to buck up and start doing a good job. this is not only good for those workers who do a good job, but also for the company. when people know that a company rewards those who work hard, more hard working people are keen to work for them and do a good job while they work for them. this would greatly improve the companies business because they would start having better workers in their outlets and more people would be attracted to not only work for them, but to buy from them, knowing that the customer service would be good. also the thing about Donald trump is quite irrelevant in this argument, it’s a whole separate issue about people not wearing masks and it definitely isn’t Donald trump that is mainly at fault.

    • @Deloooon
      @Deloooon 3 года назад +12

      Harry Garrett in this case I’m talking about this video, the owner of harvey norman, which is exactly why I explicitly stated in my first reply that one employee wouldn’t affect his billion-dollar company. yes I agree that in small businesses you have to be harsh to start one but I’m talking about big businesses where one slacking employee wouldn’t mean a lot to the company

      The ones who have never had to work in retail don't get that sales people don't WANT to come up to you either (and often deal with rude
      replies). In most jobs they are forced, by their managers and company policy, to approach all customers. They get warnings and eventually lose their job if they don't. So next time you find it annoying when a salesperson does this, don't complain to the sales person and make their sucky low-paid and thankless day even worse. Instead contact the company corporate and ask them to stop making salespeople do it. Cos trust me, they don't wanna do it either!

      Maybe if you're at the grocery store, but that's it. 80% of my sales come from helping the customer with knowledge on the product and what they didn't know themself. Unless they already know what they want, they want your help *if they're actually planning on purchasing from you instead of wasting your time*. No, "well let me know if i can help you. thanks", does not work if you plan on being more than a half ass worker (which from the looks of it you might be in your personal occupation). High spirits, confidence, and showing your customers that you want to help them is what sells a product if it doesn't sell itself already.

This can mislead some people into settling for jobs that are dying off or which are best suited for high school students or motivated retirees. If there were no minimum wage, then businesses that paid too little would struggle to find people to work for them and those which paid better would find enough staff in no time. I once worked 28 years for one of the largest retailers in the US with over 500 stores back in the 80s.
    The very first day the only owner came to our location, I was only a warehouse employee in charge of sweeping and mopping the floors all day. We knew he was coming so I had a plan. When he entered the warehouse I had found the worst looking broom I could find and when he came by my to say hello as he would always do to every one that worked for him, he told me the floors looked very good. My responce.
    Thank you, but they would look awesome if I had better brooms. He just looked at me and walked away. The manager got all over me after he left. But a week later we had all new brooms and mops. And a message from the owner for the manager to move me out of the warehouse and into training for management. I had only been there for 2 months. A year later I was off the salesfloor and new assistant manager, 2 years later a manager and 7 years later regional manager for 16 stores, until The owner died and his son sold the business. I decided I did not want to work for anyone else and retired from the retail business.
    So, get to know your owners and bosses and always stand out from the others is my advice.

    This is Harvey Norman in Australia. I used to work there throughout late high school and university. Lots of old people came in to just chit chat without ever buying anything. We had strict sales targets and would get scolded for not meeting them if we didn’t achieve these targets. Rather than missing out on potential sales by staying with a man who says “I don’t know what I want” we’d usually tell him to ask us if he needs help. The boss would also tell us to not waste time with window shoppers. Everyone made minimum wage plus commission which was 0.6% of total sales. Once a year, this guy (Gerry Harvey) or another out-of-touch executive would visit, complain that we’re not busting ass and threaten our boss to take the franchise back if we don’t improve. We would lose our commission for the following month when we didn’t achieve our sales targets in a month. I even heard rumours that a nearby store had sales strike targets - where the boss would look at the security cameras, count how many people walked into the store and then come up with a percentage of how many sales were made. This old turd also lobbied the government hard in the 2000s when eBay and online shopping was picking up for the government to tax the hell out of them. Horrible place to work.

Nowhere did I say that minimum wage is an excuse for sabotaging your employer but at the same time they cant expect 5 star service and reap the benefits with no return, especially seeing as the roles they fill aren't required to have an education they are entry level so thats what they should expect. In employment relationship is a mutual agreement that should benefit both sides. Training, opportunities to climb the ladder etc. Obviously HR should've trained the first girl properly, but everyone in that store did what was expected of them they still gave the service that they needed to. Was it 5 star? No. Does it need to be? No. I work in a min wage job (NZ is a bit different) but I love it more than my previous job which was paying $6 more, because even though the pay is shit the job is enjoyable, theres opportunities to grow, the environment is awesome etc. I worked in subway for a while and they expected 5 star even though it was min wage and the staff weren't trained properly and were often left alone at night without help. Do you see the issue there? They also refused to pay overtime which is illegal so everyone wanted to do the minimum work as legally that's all they had to do. If they want 5 star service without paying for it they need to offer better training and incentives, noone will work for free

    It's Australian theme to treat the elderly with contempt. I was with my elderly father in Harvey Normans and a shop assistant rolled his eyes at me when he was stuck behind my dad. Needless to say I went ballistic!

    What these owners should do if they really want to keep track of their employees is to send random people (always someone new) with a hidden camera on them to record how the employees treat the undercover shopper a few times a month in all their stores. That's how you keep track of things. That way the employee won't know who is undercover and who is not.
