I love him and I always will! Barrymore was full of live, he was a man full of contradictions (intelligent, subtle, athletic, wise, passionate, witty, talented, handsome but irresponsible, weak, brutal, melancholic, vulgar, addicted, pitiful, untidy) and that's why he was a brilliant actor. Tempest and Don Juan - he was great in these movies too.

There has never been a more perfect blend of a trained actor and a natural actor. He also had an uncanny understanding of comedy. He was born to perform. You cannot take tour eyes off of him.

Absolutely loved John Barrymore! And his brother Lionel and Sister Ethyl! What a great family tree! John's voice, body language, and those eyes could carry such emotion! Could not stop drinking the wine of BarrymoreBarrymoreBarrymore!! His Sherlock Holmes (1922) was delightful also (with a very young William Powell and Roland Young!)

Jack Barrymore was the greatest Shakespearean actor of the 20th century. He added the psychological emphasis to Hamlet and Richard III. Even today no one varies from his interpretation. I would include "Grand Hotel", "Midnight", "Topaze" and "The Great Man Votes to the list. He was incredble as an actor and a tragedy as a man.

Barrymore is criticized for Playmates and The Great Profile. He did parody himself...brilliantly.
He lifted the material. why did he take such roles? he paid his debts to creditors and the government.
