I’ve been pretty sick this week with kidney infection. While I’m recovering decided to practice knots. Thanks so much for this video!!! Helping to distract from my pain and learning some important skills. (Helps that I already do macrame and crochet knit. 😊)Have a Merry Christmas! 🎄❤️🙏
I use all the variations of the figure 8 as you describe, plus the in-line figure 8... it truly is a workhorse knot suitable for every situation imaginable. Keep up the great work you do, we appreciate you !
Thanks for showing how useful the Figure-8 knot can be. I practiced all of the knots you showed and then taught the Figure-8 to my boys, who already know the Bowline and some other useful knots for camping and shelters.
GBGB, this was the BEST teaching of knots I've ever known. Wow. People should grab some rope and do this along with you a few times and then test themselves...these knots are to DIE for....ha ha ha...use a few of these for our horses. Sure wish I had known more for past wilderness trips!! Thank you. The detail you are being able to teach others on this internet is so well delivered and focused. We are actually learning stuff from you 'on our couches'...grrr...and grins!
Spectacular. Clear, concise, love the repetition. I've tied a lot of knots, but the sheer versatility of this makes me wonder how I've not encountered it before. Thank you!
Hey there GBGB...just learned a bit about the Ka-Bar knife. What a history. But that is what one buys. The History. To make ends meet they had to cut corners. I like mine, it works OK. Just thought I'd write you back on the first video I find...
Thanks. I've used the figure-8 a lot and taught any of my guys that will listen but you're technique is a better way to tie the knot than how I learned.
I consider myself to be pretty good with knots. I use them all the time oddly enough. But I didn't know the figure 8 had so many variations. Looks like I learned something new!
Adding this to my on-shoulder toolbox. It's a more versatile knot than I knew before. For light-duty nearly any knot will do, but what sets good knots apart is their hold, the ease of untying, and that the knot comes close to the line's tensile strength. You really only need to know 5 or 6 knots to do almost anything, but having them based on one system makes these easier to remember. Good job!
I love using the figure 8. I first learned it in '87 when I used to rock climb. We would tie a retrace 8 directly to our seat instead using a biner. KISS method.
Thanks! Had to learn a ton of knots in my military career and really enjoy teaching them. We will have to see how this one does if people are interested in more of them. If so, I will post more of these.
Amusing story, for me at any rate. Yesterday I'm passing a neighbor whose stylish Mercedes is stuck in this Washington snow and offer to pull him out. As I bring the line from my box, I'm (unnecessarily) apologizing that it's not a proper tow line but will be sufficient. "Oh yes, I was an eagle scout, that looks like good rope," says my Mercedes man. Very relieved I don't have to show the limit of my artillery field craft, I reply, "Great! Tie whatever knot you'd recommend for this." Man does not even reach to take the rope, "oh that was years ago." So, FML. But then I remembered binge watching your channels and there's one knot that can do everything... lol. One strange neighbor towed out of the snow 👍
@@GrayBeardedGreenBeret You would not have been impressed. I eventually got the knot but kept running the full length of line through every loop. I think it's about 100'. It was a rookie affair 🙄
@@GrayBeardedGreenBeret I wasn't actually expecting you to reply..wow, thanks. Having watched the whole video, it looks like the audio thing may have been an overlooked editing mistake. I don't think it was your gear.
@@numberyellow thats possible, being self filmed I usually didn't see issues with anything until the edit and a lot of times it had to be "good enough" since that was the capture. Had to work with what I ended up with. Now I have better equipment and editing software. I think this was probably edited on the free iMovie that came with my Mac actually, and I was probably still learning that program. Ive learned a lot about filming and editing since, for sure
@@GrayBeardedGreenBeret Seems legit. I mean, hey, shit happens. Sometimes good enough is good enough. Anyway, thanks for the chat, and the insight. I'm gonna go back to watching your videos now. 👍
Extremely helpful thanks

Simple clear concise instruction.

I should have said directional in-line figure 8 loop...
Thanks for the video. Quick, brief, and understandable. This is the kinda video that feels like old man wisdom

Awesome! Passing on the skills to kids is extremely important
super teaching mr Joshua

I learned the same way to tie a figure 8 around the same. Must be a rock climber thing.
Thanks guys.
Awesome, thanks!
PS: 7 People couldn't figure out what "rope" means
Awesome stuff. I love how clearly you show the steps. Now I have to get to practicing!
I always forget about readyman.com thank you for your hard work got to be a special person to want to teach people most of what you know
They have since restructured so I am not sure if I have any videos left on there, but they still have some great stuff
Thanks for sharing, great clear instructions and visuals !
nice video.. thanks for sharing. Knots seem to be a weakness of mine.

A great video, thanks.
Were to? Everyone is infected 👽
😂
BRILLIANT!!! I only learned the figure 8 as a stopper knot in boating class. who knew it had so many uses as other ways to use.
Thanks! There are a couple more variations of this knot I didn't get into. I tried to keep it applicable to survival uses. Great knot.
love this!~
Can the figure -8 bend be applied safely for joining cords of different diameter thickness? Also, can the same bend be relied upon for heavy loads?
I always thought the bowline was the most secure and useful knot?
Good tutorial but you need to redo the voiceover at the Intro
Great knot video, I just discovered it. Tha we address at the end doesn’t seem to be working. Is it still active?
No it doesn't, they have long since closed that part down I think.
The Gray Bearded Green Beret sorry to hear that. That is what I get for being late to the party.
Since Lord Of The Rings. Figure 8 Knot's Nick Name Is:
And One Knot To Bind Them ALL... LOL
Outstanding informational resource... That audio though, makes me want to self-harm.
Yeah, I was using a pretty basic camera and no audio equipment back in the day. I might have had 300 subs when this video was made
