STANDARD ELECTRIC TIME FIRE ALARM SYSTEM @ FIRESTONE HIGH

  • In 1962 an absolutely beautiful High school was constructed in Akron, Ohio. At the time this school was considered a crown jewel for Akron Public Schools. The school was named in honor of Harvey S. Firestone (1868-1938), a tire industrialist, who along with three associates organized and built the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company.
    The school was furnished with a Standard Electric Time, model # UAX-3 (circa 1958) fire alarm system. Considered at the time to be one of the very best systems ever designed and manufactured. After 58 years of fire drills, this Standard Electric Time system still works like a charm and could easily go another 58 years. Sadly, this school was demolished in 2016.

    So, why do so many schools in Ohio get demolished as soon as they become over 50 years old? Even ones like this one which appear to be in perfectly good condition? My old elementary school was built in 1955 and the school board opted to expand and renovate it rather than demolish it. Middle school 1959, they decided to renovate it as well.
    In case you're wondering, the elementary school fire system was installed in the 80s and was upgraded this year to a brand new Siemens system. The middle school system is a mixture of four generations of Simplex alarms -- 1975 to 2005 -- due to the school being added on to so many times. 1959 wing originally had an Edwards system with bells, for the record, that was replaced in 1975 with Simplex signals the same time a new wing was added on.

      I wish there was a short and simple answer to your great question, but it would take me to long to explain it all here in detail. In short, politics and money have a lot to do with why these beautiful old schools in Ohio are being demolished and replaced with cheaper built schools. Also, in November of 1998, a national settlement was finalized between the tobacco industry and 46 states. Better known as the Master Settlement Agreement or MSA, $206 billion was paid to the states that participated in that lawsuit. Many of those states, Ohio being one of them, utilized a portion of the settlement money for building new schools; tragically resulting in the demise and destruction of many old historic school buildings.

    • @GaryBeltz
      @GaryBeltz 8 лет назад +7

      It also has to do with the cost of renovation vs a brand new facility. For example an older school like that is not up to current code for disabled people and if the costs of installing elevators, ramps, strobes on the fire alarms, etc equal to or outweigh the cost of putting up a brand new building that would meet codes they generally will settle for the path of least resistance a. k. a. take the easy way out!

    I can attest to the robustness of these old beasts. I pulled one of these very same units out of an old church; I'm pretty sure it had not been powered up or used since the mid 90s - we put a Silent Knight system in at that time and the SET unit was abandoned and left where it sat. Wired it up and it worked perfectly after sitting un-powered and unused for 20+ years.

    I'm also reminded of how in the neighboring town of West Bridgewater, their old high school building built in 1952 was demolished last year in favor of a bigger newer building. The old high school was just falling apart and was pretty much beyond repair. Prior to demolition, the old high school had a few of the original IBM fire alarm horns intact but disconnected, in favor of a Simplex 4100-series system installed in the 1990s (with rectangular 4903-series horn/strobes). The new high school has a full Simplex 4100ES voice-evac system, with wall and ceiling-mount TrueAlert speaker/strobes everywhere.

      @@OldSchoolFireAlarms People I went to school with often complained that the school itself was falling apart. I'll admit it needed a little love, some of the pillars on the outside of the building are cracked and the bathrooms aren't pleasant, but for the most part the school was fine and structurally sound. It's a strong school, and in my opinion a beautiful one. The school is named Scotia-Glenville and it was built in 1958, with some extensions in 1963 and 2001 (the 1963 additions fit perfectly with the building, the 2001 additions do not and are just bland). I feel that most of the complaints about the school supposedly falling apart are actually about how it isn't new or modern. There is something unique about schools built in the 50s and 60s, they may not be as beautiful or grand as schools from the 20s and 30s, but they are still magnificent looking schools in their own right.

      @@OldSchoolFireAlarms Most high schools in my area were built in the late 50s or early 60s. Niskayuna, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, and Schenectady (former Linton). Most of these schools thankfully are able to maintain their original character, and so far none have been demolished to make way for a new school. However, Maple Hill High School in Schodack was renovated a few years ago and the building now just looks monstrous, a modern art disaster. I'm not against renovation, but I feel like that schools from this era aren't renovated, but rather remodeled in a sense. Hereford High School, located outside my hometown, was renovation a few years ago but has maintained its character, the building mostly looks no different from when it opened in the 50s, at least on the outside.

Back in April when Brockton's public schools were on spring break, I did some dumpster diving behind an elementary school where a couple of my former teachers now work, and pulled out some Simplex 4051 horns and 4050-80 light plates they were tossing out. They were the early version too, where the horn is fully recessed into the light plate (the school was built in 1974.) They went with an odd replacement: Wheelock AH-24WP-R horns on RSSP strobe plates.

      There are signs to indicate where the pull stations are. The schools use a code 3 alarm signal.

      It was an extra horn that was in the electrical room. I did take the horn before the school was demolished.

    Can't have a modern fire alarm system in Ohio... smh

    • @OldSchoolFireAlarms
      @OldSchoolFireAlarms  Год назад +1

      There are thousands of modern fire alarm systems in most public buildings and establishments in Ohio. My You Tube channel, Old School Fire Alarms, is devoted to what the title of the channel indicates - Old schools and vintage fire alarm systems that are sadly disappearing at an alarming rate.

    What's wrong with this building why would it need to be demolished

    • @OldSchoolFireAlarms
      @OldSchoolFireAlarms  7 лет назад

      There was very little wrong with this building. It could easily have been renovated and updated where needed. It was and usually is about politics why this school will be demolished. To long to explain here.

      @exoticcar5482 8 лет назад

      4051s generally don't have the same pitch as the 4050 and 4040, since it's a DC horn and the other two are AC

    • @Goldenrod636
      @Goldenrod636 8 лет назад

      Yeah. AC and electronic horns sound the same so I don't like them.

      Goldenrod636 That's not a good reason to not like them. AC horns are the classics! They're vintage, well built to last, and crazy loud!

    Damn, that's a very rare fire alarm system!! I've seen one like that in the John W. Wynn Middle School in Tewksbury, MA until it began renovations and expansions in 2001. Today's fire alarm systems have strobes and electronic piezo horns instead of the old fashioned mechanical horns. That's the worst fire alarm system I've ever heard.
