  • My buddy Les and I have been flying our Aerovees for right 100 hours so far and he said "Hey do a leak down test!" It did sort of seem like I didn't have the same power as when I first built it....50/80 on #3!! what?? Time for a winter project..

    Nice! Where did you get the nifty valve seat cutting tool? We have 207 hours on our naturally aspirated Aerovee and love the motor. We also run 100LL and decalin. Lots of VW aero engine naysayers here but their experience does not align with my own. My major maintenance expenses has been oil changes and spark plug changes. I change the plugs once a year.

      Hey I just flipped 207 as well! crazy I started flying June 19 so that's about 41 hours a summer.. when did you start? I love how cheep the engine is to work on... a little TLC on the heads and correcting some of my construction mistakes and its getting more economical all the time. I super recommend the turbo---thats a world of difference over 36" then you can pull it back and cruise as cheap as you want but still have the take off and extra cruise power it you want it...$4k is a lot of cash but man it sure makes it funner to fly.

    Ben , as a sonex builder/flyer I had a revmaster engine. Worse nightmare I ever experienced. 6 engine outs, ate 2 pushrods in the first 5 hours, low compression and on and on. VW's just dont cut it. In my opinion sonex (an others)has done a disservice to the flying public pushing these death traps on people. I hope you stay safe. The sonex was a great airplane, the engine wasnt.

      wow! 6 engine outs!!!!!!! that's insane. Holy smokes I know they say "get back on the horse" but man. For me I've found the root cause of every issue I've had and so far the corrections have been good. Did you find the root cause of the failures you had? (other than its a VW!!) PS..just finished 4800 miles to ohio and back.. ruclips.net/video/Sbki_lqjcW8/видео.html

      @@1bengrubb Wow! After all my engine outs, Electrical problems with the mags, revmaster wouldnt help, I never let the pattern at the airport. flew off the 40 hours and sold it. Needless to say Im pretty good at pattern work! lol

      @@richardlively1666 my mags were bad too and as the second owner---sonex sent me new mags for free! so that was nice. I totally get you though---I would never leave the pattern after all that...

      Unfair statement. VW make excellent aircrsft engine but not when your asking a case designed for 30hp to make 100hp!
      The type 1 engine is good for anything up to 1835cc (60hp)...any more qne your reliability will begin to suffer! Allot can be attributed to too high compression ratios!, lots if electric lad using after market parts etc..

    • @richardlively1666
      @richardlively1666 11 месяцев назад

      That is an absurd statement. You said an excellent aircraft engine making 30 hp. Lets see you put that in your aircraft and fly. Good luck with that.@@Thinkflite

    Can I ask what compression ratio you're supposed to run these engines at?

    • @1bengrubb
      @1bengrubb  9 месяцев назад

      between 7 and 8:1. It was setup for 8:1 when I got it and when I ordered the turbo kit they said put it at 7

    I appreciate the video, but you should not skimp on an aircraft engine. If those valve seats grind so easily that means they are not hardened. You should get modern hardened seats, they will last longer and also not be affected by corrosion as much. I hope you cleaned out the combustion chamber with glass bead blasting. Also if the polish the combustion chamber, carbon will not stick to it as easily. With hardened seats you will not need to use leaded fuel also. And I hope your EGT probes are not just under the insulation, but actually in the exhaust pipe.

      Holy smokes that was a ton of advice are you AnP? I'm 1700 mi into a 2,200 mi trip to Ohio. I'm not a mechanic but I was told it would work.....at least that's what Sonex said and they've been doing it for 30 years. Last leg was 254 miles on 9.1 gallons. dang that's awesome! Almost 3,000 to go to get back. Cross your fingers!!!

    • @chippyjohn1
      @chippyjohn1 2 года назад

      @@1bengrubb I'm just a light vehicle mechanic by trade, not much difference though. Having the probe under the insulation explains how cutting some slats in the cowling cooled one of them down. They will not read accurately if not inside the header, and their response time will be very slow. Be safe.

      Yep.....last year was $200 this year was $200.....but...that's just 2 hours of labor for a mechanic! It's the only way I can afford to fly. If it averages under $500 a year I will be happy.

    • @1bengrubb
      @1bengrubb  2 года назад +3

      @@flytoday yep $200 each. I'm fast at it now. I suppose if a guy didn't have the skill for mechanicing it could be super expensive. I guess it's the "price" I pay for affordable flight. I don't have the cash for the alternative. I think this rebuild cycle will slow down since the first rebuild was my mistake the second one is a manufacturing sort of flaw...
