For the most part I will watch the video I’m currently viewing and then go and take a look at the new one. Our neighbor across the street had a reel mower (push type) that was used on a golf course, his lawn always stood out from everyone else's, it looked like a putting green, the manicured look. This was back in the late 50's through the 70's. The mower looked very much like this one, of course it was primitive compared to this.

    For about 12 years I cut my lawn with a Robomow rl500 robotic lawn mower. The part I liked the most was how it did not leave any lines at all. It did a fantastic job but finally gave up. It was only $500 and now they are very expensive and since I'm retired I don't really care if it takes me time to do the mowing. Certainly for $3,000 I would definitely get another robotic mower.

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  2 года назад +1

      I remember the robomow very well. I have done a number of robot mower reviews with great results. No stripes but as you say you don't really see any signs of mowing which can be good too. Stay tuned with my channel I have some very cool robot stuff coming up soon, you will be very interested in it after reading what you wrote.

      No problem, if I had a more level lot I would reel mow at least part of my yard. I have been using this one for about 4 weeks and every person that came to my house was like......wow look at your lawn! I like to think my lawn looks pretty nice regularly but its funny when people see the short cut and stripes they go nuts.

    If you pick a point on the horizon (tree,fence post) and walk toward it without wavering your lines will be more crisp. Looking down at the grass/edge of your last pass will cause you to sway off coarse. Grass looks awesome though

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  2 года назад

      That is a great tip! Any experienced reel cutters will cringe at my lines for sure, I am very out of practice. Sadly outside of these demos my yard isn't great for it, just too many slopes and bumps, New England is tough for those types of mowers at home/

  • @someperson7
    @someperson7 2 года назад +1

    Maybe it's my inner cheapskate but I remember being able to get stripes with the 50 dollar used lawnmower my Dad bought and fixed up. You could even mulch by pushing in one direction and pulling in the other. Then you were always blowing the grass in the same direction. That way each row you run over the clippings from the last. They all end up blowing to the edge of the lawn that way.

    • @blzt3206
      @blzt3206 2 года назад

      You certainly weren't striping at a half inch though that's a different story

    • @someperson7
      @someperson7 2 года назад

      @@blzt3206 Good question. I do remember it having an adjustable deck. And I do remember you could lower it low enough it would hit dirt. But I was like 10. So I couldn't say how low it was. But yah, I doubt it was a half inch. Most people's yards aren't that smooth anyway. You gotta roll em early and often.

  • @GunnyPhillips

    Your videos are always interesting. Thanks for that. This particular product might be of interest if it could mow faster. • @SilverCymbal

    Thanks for another great video! I noticed your cut was quite high. I have Palmetto Buffalo (St Augustine) turf and prefer a longer cut. Would you recommend this for a 50mm cut? The other reason is that I like the roller to help level out the soil and also the scarifier and verticut reel attachments.
    Looking forward to your reply.

  • @Justin-bw8zi
    @Justin-bw8zi Год назад +1

    Wonderful video as always. I'm curious on the speeds - did you find that you could save time cutting on the faster speeds? I have a cheaper reel mower option today and candidly my biggest gripe is just the time it takes to mow the lawn (half 40% acre lawn). The basket is small, the cut is not ideal thus heavily overlap lines to compensate, etc. Curious your thoughts on the self propelled Swardman cutting down on mowing time

      @@SilverCymbal your review was great, all the things you review I’m interested in! Just a thought on the Swardman, Is that a steel grass catcher? May I request you review some low voltage landscape lighting?

    • @SilverCymbal

      @@peterscanlon9727 Thank you very much. The catcher is steel, plastic would be ligher and the Allett catcher is better for durability and weight but the Swardman is more stylish, which isn't really as important. If it dies, it looks like a 5 minute job to swap it out. If you mean goes flat mid-cut, then you forgot to charge it, or have too big a lawn for it. Range anxiety translated into lawn care. It's not real for cars, and the same here.

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  2 года назад

      I didn't see any updates on that, but are there any consumer reel mowers that use metal? Some like the Allett use plastic gears on their cassettes and when I reviewed the LIberty 43 people though it was a weak point but in the case of the allett the plastic gears are used as a shear point in case of lockup, The Swardman use metal on the casettes but they can do that since they have a belt in the middle to give relief in case of issues. But on the transmission perhaps metal is always better.

      I appreciate that, my lawn is not ideal for reel cutting long term, so for the testing with this one, I used it for about a month & cut at 1.5-1.8". Normally in summer I cut at 3" and spring and mid summer I will cut 2.5" with my rotary rider. When I go longer the kids clobber it and the grass can't hold up.

    Works great! ruclips.net/user/postUgkxprGGPRQoChQaA8u58dt7miEpxQBKiWeJ More difficult with longer grass, though, but I was expecting that. I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.

    I do like the addition of the rear wheels that enable it to be transported on walkways and driveways and I do like it’s width. However I think that I’d still purchase an Allett Liberty despite its 17” width as you can purchase two standard Greenworks batteries and run the mower continuously as well as replace them as they age. Also the design is tried and true and I think that it’s more proven. One day a homeowners version of that Cub Cadet RG3 greenskeeper will hit the market and we won’t even have to push them ourselves. It will be much smaller and it won’t cost a quarter million dollars.
