hi, your description of indigenous reference to giving these egregors any attention has a reasoning not explained because its truth is too far for our contextualization. These egregors only exist from the beliefs of real people, that's how powerful real souls are! This statement infers also that not all people are real? This reality of phenomenon is obvious in the solution of these seeming various indigenous tribes offering the same solution, based on thousands of years dealing with these egregors, but also infers the culture and others eliminated in history, knew this information at its inception, and or before it

One of the most believable boot camp stories ever.
We had one dude who found out he was a sleepwalker in Basic. Just walked up to the guard in the middle of the night with a dead stare. Guy turned around and just saw these dead eyes staring into his soul from a foot away.

I had a late friend who had been a soldier in the German army on the eastern front during WW2. He admitted to having seen many strange things but chalked it all up to fatigue. I suppose it was a coping mechanism. He related a few stories because he trusted me, and I will submit that to see what he saw and then consider that it could be real would have been terrifying.

I swore to keep them to myself, but my friend is long dead now. The one that both frightened and enraged me was one that involved someone, or something, searching through the personal effects of the fallen with fiendish delight. How do you react? Report what may be a hallucination to your command? Fire on it and garner attention from your superiors and all the local opposition? Terrifying and frustrating at the same time.

I did basic in germany and I definitely had some hallucinations. One was a black fox chasing its tail endlessly, which turned out to be a tree stump. The other was 2 men with weapons approaching while I was in the alarm post. They had a bright glow around them and were hovering . I called it in to the sergeant, he took a look and told me there was nothing. That was after three nights of sleeping no more than an hour a night.

Can comfirm, I went through bootcamp in 2012, and yes, we had at least one of those guys. Had another dude that told everyone he was a Satanist, and another who proudly told us all that he had an SS trench coat in his closet back home that was his grandpa's. And that it wasn't a war trophy. One of my buddies had some kind of medical emergency maybe halfway through and got med-evaced. I thought it was just a panic attack, but he'd had some kind of reaction or something, and had to be taken out on a stretcher. Never heard hide nor hair from him after.
As for dreams in bootcamp, I still remember my first night. Technically it was the second night, but they don't let you sleep the first one. I dreamt I was working on a cruise ship, which was weird because I had never and still haven't ever been aboard a cruise liner. And then I remember the overhead florescent lights coming on (I was top rack, directly undreneath a light panel which was probably three or four feet above me). I don't know what it was about bootcamp, but I *NEVER* over-slept or had the inclination to. Which is weird, because all throughout school, I had never been what you might consider a "morning" person, and I haven't been since boot camp. Maybe it was fear of the instructors and the core knowledge that they'd make my life miserable if I wasn't on the toe line five seconds after lights on, but I've never been able to recreate it since then. Hell, I've even used the General Quarters alarmto wake me up, which worked for maybe a week before I learned to ignore it.
Anyways, I've been out for nearly 10 years now (did my four and got out in '16), and lately, I've been wanting to get active, get back out into the woods, hit the trails with my wife and do some hiking/camping. We live out in California by some truly gorgeous trails, but hearing stories like these kinda makes me just want to stay in the city where the weirdest/scariest thing I might see is some crackhead taking a crap on the sidewalk. To quote Family Guy, "damn, nature! You scary!"

    For those who are interested:
The Aufhocker is a broad describtion of creatures known in Germany and Poland. They have many Names, but what they all have in Common is that they suddenly appear next to you on your Way Home. Some look Human and strike up a Conversation. At some Point they either ask, or just jump on your Back so you give them a Piggyback Ride.
During your walk Home the Creature gets heavier and heavier, but also your Mind gets darker, more depressed.
Mostly they look like a Kobold, but they can shapeshift to look like anything they want.
The Baukhauv never took a Life, but the Stüpp (which looks like a Werwolf) has killed many.
Pippin the younger, Father of Karl the Great, said he had slayn one of these Creatures.

The DS's were so fixated on getting us through basic at the time that when his rifle failed to function they just had the shooter next to him swap rifles for his BRM training that would let him graduate. When we did U.S. Weapons course he managed to slam the M203 closed on his thumb, and both the M240 and M249 jammed on him at the second shot. Odd. Probably just bad luck, but odd.

It could also be some regional variation of the folklore. That happens a lot with mythology over time plus other stories get swapped & shared. Vampire lore is a good example of that. There's such a variety of different types & rules for them depending on the region.
But the version of the Aufhocker I'd heard about as an American is the version you mentioned; the imp that leaps on travelers' backs & rides them to exhaustion & they'd sometimes shapeshift to objects that add extra weight like the English Hedley Kow.

I've seen something quite similar to what is depicted in "The Night Stag" portion of the video. I was serving a mission for the LDS church (I no longer affiliate with that faith) and was assigned to Picture Rocks, AZ for 4.5 months. We saw and experienced many strange things there, and was warned by many other missionaries about the experiences they had in the area. One night, we were driving back to our house/single-wide we stayed at. It was later than we were supposed to be out at with the strict rules and daily schedule. My companion decided to take a detour on the way back that takes us down a dirt road between cotton fields to see if there were any homes down that way we could visit later in the week. We hit a dead-end in the road, and my companion turned around. As he was accelerating, I could see this fast moving thing in the moonlight running perpendicular to us in the cotton field. It jumped out in front of the car causing my companion to slam on the brakes. In the headlights, we saw this werewolf looking thing standing on its hind legs that was at least 8 feet tall. It continued running across the road and into the adjacent field, and I started yelling at my companion to don't stop and keep going. Non of us assigned to that mission really believed in the paranormal until we started having problems with it all over the place. It was bad, especially those who served near or in Indian reservations.

I wish wartime stories would do an episode about military members encounters with the cryptid dogman.

When my brother was in Germany some decades ago, he and a friend of his were out drinking in a field around the Black Forest when they heard footsteps in the trees approaching their direction from a distance. He said it sounded as if it was walking on two legs and not four and that it must have been massive, judging by the heaviness of the footfalls. He said, whatever it was, it did stay out of view and never came out of the treeline, so he has no idea what it was but he remembered being very worried as it was approaching in their direction. I lived in Germany, Bavaria, myself once and the forests do have a very enchanted and preternatural feel about them.

Something I was told, by two different World War 2 veterans (one USA and the other German, who turned spy for the allies) have a warning for most people. "In story books we are told of great things, both good and evil. We love listening to them, and then ask if they are real. most of the time we are told quickly to not worry about it, and that it's just a story. But then one day, you see something out of a story book, and it breaks you. It leaves a scare on your mind, that can't be healed, because everything you know then is a lie. The stories were are told, are real, and you need to believe them, so that you can run when you see them." I met these two vets within three months of each other at my job, and I take time to listen to them, as I do play stories when I'm able to during my working hours.

in malaysia and indonesia, we have were-tigers: witch-doctors who can transform into tigers via rituals, they can be good, acting as protectors, or they can be bad... i heard a friend who related that his mother told him that during second world war, when our country was under japan's military rule, his grandma could travel vast distances despite being an old lady without a motor vehicle. one day, deep in the night, she suddenly arrived at one of her daughter's house because she was delivering a child, and her younger siblings spied a tiger pacing beneath the floorboards of that stilt-raised house.

My late grandfather was stationed in East Germany with the Allied Occupation Army after WWII. But AFAIK he was just working in a PX during that time, so I don't think he saw any shapeshifters in the wilderness. He saw a great deal of combat during the war, but he almost never talked about it. Once I was watching TV with him and there was a newsreel clip of soldiers slogging through deep mud and he said, "That's what it was like in France." In the summer of 85 at MCRD San Diego I was someone that would occasionally stay up an hour after lights out, when we were allowed to get up to use the head and write letters. Made the guys on fire watch nervous but we were never told we couldn't do it. It helped me with the cultural shock of bootcamp somehow, I was already married and had a kid born while I was in bootcamp. Had a strange experience while in Comm school at 29 Palms. I had a buddy from West Covina, and we were driving to his parents' house one Friday night while we were off for the weekend. While we were driving across this desert road on the way there this translucent ball of faint light about the size of a cantaloupe seemed to move across the windshield from the driver's side to mine on the passenger's side. Looked like it was about 6 inches off the hood and about that far in front of the windshield. I thought I was seeing things and kind of side glanced at by buddy and notice he looked a little nervous but neither of us said anything. I even moved my head as if cracking my neck and it didn't move. After a few minutes it slowly lifted up and away. I waited a few minutes and said that was weird, and he blurts out "you saw that too"! We both saw it in the same area, it wasn't a reflection from anything. Never really felt scared just kind of creeped out wondering what it was.

Ball lightening I'm guessing. Very rare phenomena. Something very similar happened to myself and a coworker at a scale house at a quarry we worked at one night. Earlier in the night it had stormed, with thunder and lightening just north of us, but it rained heavily at the quarry. But at the end of the storm, a florescent glowing greenish blue "string" came in the window, humming like how powerlines do after a rainstorm, and it slowly moving from his window at the west side of the scale house, thru to my side, and then out the window on the east side. It wiggled across almost at eye level, like how a snake moves. It was only there for less then 10 seconds. I thought about reaching out and touching it but somehow my buddy sensed I was going to do it, and yelled, DON'T DO IT!! Him yelling at me scared the shit outta me, and before I had a chance to reconsider it, it was gone.
Never saw anything like it before or since!! Very strange and kind of creepy. But neither of us were frightened by it. We talked about it for the rest of the shift, but decided we weren't going to say anything to anyone else b/c we figured they'd think we were smoking something crazy or worse!! lol
I always remember that when I hear weird stories like yours Tommy.

Ok. Here's what happened when I was 16. I was an army brat. My father was stationed at Darmstadt. I spent my weekends hiking into the forest. My best friend and I both had back packed far into the hills of the black forest trying to reach a spire that was visible from far away. There was snow on the ground and we saw large dog tracks about us, so I decided we would climb up on some large boulders to have lunch. You can see very far into the woods because there isn't any undergrowth because the dark Forest doesn't allow that with all the shaded areas all you see is tree trunks and fir trees. As we both said they're eating our sandwiches and talking about what kind of building that spiral was on and maybe a castle or otherwise an old man came from around the back of the rocks. You spoke to us in German and I asked him if he spoke English which he did and he started to tell us the kings were buried in a tomb where this spire was. We sat there looking at the view quietly for a minute then turned around to see that he had disappeared. It was unnerving when we realized there was only our tracks and the large canine tracks. We hiked for a while then decided we could never make it to our goals for decided to turn and go home.
We had hiked far into strange woods we didn't know and darkness was falling fast upon us. Then we noticed a large Shepard type dog following us from about 50 ft. We heard cars and night fell. My buddy chickened out and went to the road to get a ride, but I was too proud to give up. The wolf stayed between 30 to 35 feet behind me until I finally got to the edge of the forest at cambria frisch hill. There i turned as I stepped into the clearing by base to see where the wolf was.. he had stopped right at the edge and stayed there. I will never forget that experience. I'm sure it was the old man.

One of the things that always makes me doubt the “It was just a dream answer,” Is the simple fact that we've all had nightmares that felt real but we kind of know when we're awake. Very early this morning for instance, I took my dog out to go to the bathroom and she took off chasing some stray mutt that had wandered onto our property In spite of it feeling somewhat dreamlike I knew for a fact I was awake.
(My dog came safely back after chasing the mutt to the edge of our property by the way)
Though I will say based on my one strange encounter, when you see something and you’re not quite sure what it is it can feel dreamlike. This happened when I was a kid, we were up at Mount Shasta staying in this house out in the woods. The house had a wrap around porch with windows and sliding glass doors all around. I was already somewhat on edge because of mountain lions and bears. So one night when me and my brother were sitting on the couch watching TV I glanced over at the dark sliding glass door and see what I can only describe as a Dog-like mouth full of glowing teeth and two glowing eyes staring at me, It almost looked like those deep sea photos of angler fish. Anyway just as I take a sharp in breath of fear it turns away and then boom the power goes out. And if that wasn’t creepy enough as everyone’s running around trying to get the power back on (We were off great with solar panels For context) I see down in the valley the lit up silhouette of a flying saucer or something, Even at the time I thought I was imagining it, Anyway What it looked like was a ring of lights around it and then one glowing light right at the top that looked like the sort of transparent cab that you see in movies, It was really weird. I probably would have just passed it off as me imagining things except for the fact that pretty much everyone else saw the UFO down in the valley.

If he is in the Bundeswehr, he is in the West German army. The army of the GDR was the NVA or Nationale Volksarmee. Given that his name is Adolph, this probably happened many years ago. I would venture that Adolph was born in the time of the third Reich, because this is not a contemporary German name. It's just not a name, Germans give their kids and since you have to get a name approved. Adolph is considered a historic name and not illegal, parents are discouraged from doing so. I believe it is this channel that shares a story of American soldiers stationed in Germany who had similar experiences.

However, the name's popularity has declined significantly since World War II due to its negative associations with Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. After Hitler took power in 1933, the name briefly became more popular, but by 1942 it had become very unpopular, and by 1951 it was rarely used. Some people born before the war who were named Adolf chose to avoid the association, such as Adolf Dassler, the founder of Adidas, who went by the nickname "Adi". In modern Germany, many people with the name Adolf choose to use shortened versions, such as Adi or Dolf. While it's illegal to name a child "Adolf Hitler" in Germany, there's no official law against using the first name only."

I saw something similar when I was fourteen. It wasn't in Germany. It was at a trailer park in West Texas in the 90's. What I saw wasn't tall, but more imp-like in stature.
It had ashen skin, cole black eyes, and long, sharp ram like horns that petruded from its head, and these same horns were jutting out from its jaw line.
It had sharp claws on its hands, and feet. The claws looked raptor-like. It had the most sinister look on its face. It was terrifying. A lot of weird things happened in that trailer park. So maybe it wasn't a shape shifter, but whatever it was, it had malevolent intent. That much I'm certain.

I replied: you are kidding me,is imposible without a ladder or ropes.."
He smiled at me in a strange way, took the antenna and CLIMB the tree..i gave no words to explain or describe it..he CLIMB the tree without apparent effort and in an eye blink..the tree was HIGH,too high to climb even with equipment, less the way he did,the descend was also creepy, like a more than normal "float" manner..he smiled at me,look around us as he seek for other persons, smiled me again in a way a find disturbing, and we return camp..never spoke him again.

"helping me in the vehicle" "we were pulling security we didn't help you with shit" he does not know what happened but he did tell me part of him thought it might have been his dad who died when he was 13 was the one who helped him out. sorry I could not give you more detail but I hope this story is something you tell I love listening to your stories so does my SO they were the one who introduced me to your channel and this was part of the reason I asked him about this story

I was in Germany in '88 and '89 with the US Air Force doing weather support for the Army (3d ID). We used "going to the field" in the same manner. We never did guard duty since we were holding a continuous weather watch. That didn't stop Armt NCOs and Officers trying to get us to stand watch.

But , he had called it in on the radio , to HQ . First time ever , we were given live ammo so , we were locked and loaded . I never seen anything but , several guys (and women) seen them ! We sent up flares and lit up about a 10 acre area and there was NOBODY THERE !?
When we got back , my buddy was questioned all the way up to Brigade level . About 2 weeks after , i had to ask him about it ! We were switch operators so , we all had a Top Secret security clearence . When i asked him , he took a swig of his beer and said , "you know i can't truly answer what you're asking . But i will tell you this , i believe in ghosts now" !

@BartG87- I was stationed at Giebelstadt AAF near Würzburg. Rhein-Main was our servicing CBPO, so we occasionally had reason to go there... even if we had to make one up! Giebelstadt was an interesting place, not just historically. It was once a top secret base personally opened by Hitler, who had the town and base removed from all maps (it took five different maps, even in 1987, to find one that had it shown!). It lasted near the end of WWII until someone realized that the "sheep" used to camouflage the grass runway didn't move. Then, the US bombed the trap out of it. We were finding unexploded ordinance still when I was there. Also, there is links to the Peasant's War in the 1300s, and more. I have had a few... interesting experiences in the area as well.
