Man was an amazing artist 🎨. He was bullied as a child. Every case is different. We can all sit back and judge but what would any of you have done if you were in the same situation. Obviously he never murdered anyone till he went to prison. As we all know especially California prisons men are forced to join gangs and kill against their will or they will be killed. Yea he's no saint but no one knows this man's journey and what he had to experience.

I agree with you for the most part but he was never forced to join a gang. The brand does the exact opposite only looking for the most extreme inmates and do not recruit just any white guy.
That being said the cailfornia prison system is crazy and he would of have to participate with violence to some capacity.

He died May 11th, you quoted wrong date, and as with the legend of Tom there is so much misinformation, one-sided bop tales, Tom's story may never be told in the real truth. He hated bullies; a childhood friend of his told me Tommy was a reactionary, I've had many messages from former prisoners of how Tom saved their lives, no one hears those stories. If a prisoner right now is eating a vegetarian meal, they can thank Tommy who fought for those privilege's. Up until the end they tried to bully him and certainly tortured him T was very ill and in pain at the end having had many tests. But when he repeatedly asked for his results, he was not given them and at one point one CO asked Tom "Why are you afraid to die?" wtf? Before I met Tommy I did not know our country tortured people. Tom called me wife, set me as his next of kin, I was able to kiss him and hold his hand before he died amidst those that loved, respected, advocated for him and loved him. His ashes, art and photos are with me many that were used in this video. "They" wanted him to die inside that prison but he beat them!

I'm sorry for your loss. Its crazy how an insignificant event can lead to other events that are devastating to a bunch of other people's lives. I cant even imagine how tom made it through all that time in isolation like that.
WOW ....can tell his inner power was as strong as a giant .... its not for us to judge .... sad to hear what you went through ... and as an ex inmate (im 60 ) i understand how these things happen ... power corrupts .... all i see most with tommy is .. inner strenght ... plus amazing creativity .. drawings are powerful starements ... thank you for sharing ...

@@meandu1512 only people who done time (im in nz ) especially in maxi prisons .... realise the petty games and power plays by staff ... pitting people against each other ... or just working constantly day in day out on something they know as meaning and principle to you ... also we realise how anybody from any walk of life can be abused by the powers and end up in prison .... victems of circumstance ... screws go home .. we dont that is our home ... people want blame inmates and refuse to look at circumstances and guards and the abuse of power ... anywaybthanx for your reply .. we are all human ... we shouldnt judge anybody ... thats not our job ... hope lifes treating you better now .... and yes striking artwork ..... blew me away .... the medium .. pencil is it ? powerful .. contrast of black and white .. light and dark ...(as in dark ..evil .. light good ) plus the religous position of his body ... thanx .. empathy ...
For anyone wondering about Toms gang status and his last name, he was not jewish, he was adopted.
He kept his stepfathers name because he was good to him and his biological father wasnt.
I was told this by an AB member many , many years ago while at Corcoran.
I used to hear a lot of talk about this in the CDC and in the feds

I noticed that too. I had AB, ABT, AC, etc., at Leavenworth and they BARELY could stay on the same yard. I had Silverstein at Leavenworth from '88 through the early 2000s, when we decided to move him to the ADX.
@@BillWalters-kx8sw , yes I know he was at Marion in 1983, but he was transferred to Atlanta. When the cubans rioted, they turned Silverstein over to the Bureau and they transferred him to Leavenworth. We had Silverstein from 1988 until the early 2000s, when the Director decided to move him to the ADX; where he died. I used to make rounds in Silverstein's cell at least once a week and talked to him each time. I assume you're not trying to educate me about him.
@@BillWalters-kx8sw, I was lucky, having been at Leavenworth twice: once as a department head and ending as an Associate Warden. I wish I had kept a journal over my 31 years. I was also the Regional Director's exec, so I traveled with him to all 19 federal prisons in the mid-west. While visiting the ADX, I talked to Silverstein, who was getting ready for his quarterly review. He had cut his hair and trimmed his beard. He joked and told me he was turning over a new leaf. Right! Maybe one day I'll consider your suggestion. Regards

Al Profit. Please do a full documentary on Thomas Silverstein. There is no full length documentary I can find. Ive read the Hot House a couple times. How can there not be a documentary or a motion picture on the man deemed the most dangerous prisoner in U.S history? I don’t get into any racist ideology but I completely understand that prison’s culture, and Inmate rules revolve around race. Especially California state prisons. This man is more interesting than most of the subjects of your documentaries. I trust & love your work. Hope to see you do more on this subject. Keep up the good work.

"The Hot House" is a very interesting book. I especially like the story of the relationship between Carl Bowles and the new inmate (who I forget his name.)

Check this out kiddos.. I live about 15 miles maybe from the Leavenworth prison where ge was in like 1995.. long story but I got the chance to take a personal tour of the place.. my dad new a guard and the guy agreed to take us if we first read the book the hot house.. a great book all about that prison
. One of the best parts was the story about Silverstein.. and he was still in that prison.. I new we would get to see him so I was kinda excited about that.. he had killed a guard at some other prison.. anyway we did get to see him but only on a tv monitor..haha
. That's as close as we could get. Damn it!! This guard showing us around hated the guy!!!! I mean hated!!!! It was cool.. I was blown away with the entire experience. . This was in 1995 I believe.. they moved him out to an ADX ..I guess that's how u say it..its in Colorado I believe.. but yeah I was really blown away by the situation they had him in.. I couldn't believe they could keep a person in such a bad situation. Dude they had him in real solitary. . Dude not segregation. . No I mean real solitary. .in fact the guard said they had a rule about talking to the guy.. no talking even!!!! Man I couldn't believe it!! Way to much I thought even
Man that interview was crazy. Notice how Silverstein admits that he could have killed the guard who clubbed him on his head, but he didn't because "..he was always alright to me.."
If you stop to think now, Silverstein planned out the killing of the one guard for very personal reasons. The fact that he was clubbed on his head by a 2nd guard and didn't react, takes a lot of self discipline...not glamourizing the man as some kind of nice guy, but you have to respect his discipline as an assassin.
