The way he passed that pack of 12 made everyone look like children. That was just insane to see.
I'm assuming those people he passed would have been at a very high level of fitness too??
@@na-dk9vm yes
@@na-dk9vm some are high level pros
@@jasonmccartney4167 my point exactly, and he just cruises past them like that, animal
He passed it like it was a bunch of age groupers agreed to make a peloton.
Lionel your biggest improvement is your story telling, very watchable, oh and good race too.
Still curious about the green bike... just tell us already!
Yes, tires pop some times in the morning from people inflating their tires when they rack their bikes the night before. I actually thought the pro's came with their bikes in the morning...maybe that is a thing in the passed....As a nobody, Let these pro's do their jobs.
If you make a tee-shirt with Lional missing a tooth sporting a mullet I'll wear it.

I'm in! 😂😂😂
Same
Yup
That pack of 12 should be embarrassed by this video. Not only were they all clearly cheating and having a huge benefit from the draft, but Lionel after losing 3 minutes still caught them and proceeded to go straight past without drafting them for a minute. Doing an effort that none of them could even follow him on.
THIS!!! That was incredible. Lionel passed them like they were on a Sunday ride. Amazing...as for the drafting...the organizers really need to get that in check. This was the lead group and they were being allowed to cheat...unforgivable in my opinion.
And without a proper front wheel... What a champion he is...
Yet another ding on Ironman. It’s as if these guys are purposely running the brand into the ground.
I don't think they should be embarrassed they couldn't keep up, Lionel is elite even amongst pros, especially at the 70.3 distance.. but to be that close in non-draft.. yeah that's bad
@@Kevgti5 Soo being that close they should be embarrassed?

hahahah!
Thavage race Lionel, great work 🤟
I see what you did there 😂
Lmfao
Think of how much faster the maple syrup can fly in now. Less restriction, and more aero.
Would’ve been great to watch that comeback story unfold on the livestream. I love Talbots humorous editing. The best duo.
Unbeatable duo
Take a shot every time Lionel says “undoubtedly” lol
Well done Lionel, your partnership with your coach is seriously reaping dividends. Great to see.
Have to agree with Lionel regarding leaving bikes overnight, flats are happening too often in the pro ranks.
As an age grouper, I agree and would have no problem at all with pro category being able to check their gear. I don't think anyone would be upset with "special treatment", you guys deserve it with all the massive amount of training you put in!
Never dreamed that the pros had to leave their bikes overnight as well. Come on! That is ridiculous.
The no tooth, mustache, mullet, no shirt look is just so good....someone give him a banjo
Man, the Ironman drafting rules really need to be looked at. They’re bad enough as is, but the fact they’re not even being enforced is laughable. The effort to get the front of the race was nothing short of phenomenal, massive respect.
The first 3 and a half minutes made me laugh more than most comedy specials
That weight saving without the tooth, tho, you will fly up the hills hella fast now🙃
I understand you are a pro triathlete, but DAMN! My BEST power output for 5 minutes is 328W, on a trainer, on a flat course. I can't imagine how my legs would feel pushing 410W in a race going up a hill and passing other professional triathletes as if they were standing still.. That's on another level man. Hell of a performance.
Plus the swim and run lol
@@leslie7922 right, I can’t run a 6min mile, and he runs that on the tail end of an Ironman. And that’s after averaging 320W….. I can’t imagine being able to do that.
Lionel can do 320+ for 5 hours and has a freakishly low max rate. His capacity is insane
Was inspired to do my first 70.3 in MT because of Lionel -- It was awesome to see him on the long walk to the beach and again on the course last Sunday. Congrats Lionel on a great race.
OMG 🤣 that tooth 🤣😭 , Lionel if you leave that tooth as it is I will send you 10% of what I earn for the rest of my life
It's always great listening to Lionel talk about his race. I agree with whoever said he looked like a pro passing a group on a Sunday ride. I can't wait to race Mont Tremblant next year.
Also, so you don't forget his name, second place is Tomas Rodriguez, fastest running split in MT
And supposedly the biggest drafting wheel sucker on the day.
@@jmw2224 And yet, the fastest running split
@@javierudecroix yes, because he drafted on the bike and conserved energy while doing so.
Well... Half a tooth less means less weight and more speed. Lionel is just becoming more optimized.
Probably the only person in the world that can still look good with messed up teeth
I was listening to a podcast with Kienle who was commentating the IM Frankfurt and he was also unhappy with the lack of officiating in regards to drafting.
Thanks, Lionel and team, that was equal measures hilarious and engrossing. Fully agree that demanding pro's rack the bike 12 hrs pre-race is a bit anal and counter-productive: it's not a totally fair race if the athlete finds a crippled bike at transition.
Ironman probably doesn't want to spend some additional 5 bucks somewhere, which might pop up as a cost to make sure the pro's bikes stay in order.
Ironman is a money generating organization without love for the sport, which wants to syphon money off of other people's love of the sport.
As evidenced by the fact, that you can only qualify for Kona via their company races, and definitely not via Challenge Roth. What a joke.
Wow, so inspiring Lionel and funny to watch, a real good guy and one of the best out there, huge fan of yours.
Whether he realizes it or not he is a raw inspiration. Most people share 95% success information and act like they don't have failure workouts or races. It is nice to see someone who is like most of us intermediate endurance athletes that constantly make mistakes and it costs us with bad races and workouts. Love the content lionel!
Changed your bike because Canyon wants to make more money on heavy disc brake Instagram bikes :D
Imagine sprinting as hard as you can for 5 seconds. Then multiply that by 10 million and add 4 hours. Lionel.
It takes 90-120 days to make a red blood cell…. You need altitude exposure for a minimum of that time before you start seeing the marginal gains 🤔
Are you allowed to rack your bike with training wheels and put your race wheels on race morning? Maybe avoid the flat
I love Lionel because he is like a baby!
Seeing Lionel drop the cyclists made me think they were age groupers not pros lol
Another reason why disc brakes on a TT bike is asinine!
Was he referring to Tomas Hernandez gaining on him on the run?
Lionel's mind is as fit as his body! Fascinating athlete to listen to and learn from.
you are the real big unit! Inspiring and absolute superhuman #nolimits bring it on Kona!
What a Legend 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
60% humidity? That would be a relief! Come to Queensland where it's barely below 80% in summer
I live in Tremblant..was there...congrats...I have a few good photos I could send you
Ohhhhhhhh jaja don’t do us like that mannnnn , dirty play at the end bro
Congrats on the tough win champ! Lionel looking more like a UFC fighter then a triathlete. Shoutout to Paul Felder!
Goes to show equipment is only a small piece of the puzzle. Cheap front wheel with a non race tire and still destroyed the bike.
Great race Lionel! I hope you are very pleased with your performance!!! Especially after the flat. Great job !!!
That wheel change would be so much faster with your old bike 😉 and you changed your bike predominantly because Canyon told you to 😆
Waited to put this on while doing my 20 min FTP test. Perfect timing. Perfect Storytelling!! Great race Lionel!!!
What an awesome ending! Thanks for the photo Talbot and Lionel in transition before the race.
Dude disc brakes are a nightmare! Imagine how quick your pit stop would have been with rim.
It looks like you sank your teeth into the race 🙂
You may want to concider going to Race Des Moines 70.3 year if you want heat and humidity. I did the full this year and it was absolutely brutal. But the race was absolutely awesome!
Cool story
Yeah the heat in iowa does not play lol
Had you been riding the rim brake rocket ship - your wheel change would have been 30 seconds.
You are the best and a real legend, love it! Now I will go to the stadium and smash the track!!! 🏃🏼♂
Thank you for sharing the video wish you success in growing your life 👍🏻🔔❤️
Why not use tubeless??
This story explains a lot. 😉
My definition of happiness, at least for today, was watching Lionel hammer past that pack of riders…. Simple pleasures 😊
Wow the pass on the pack of 12 was amazing. But, how about the bike? Low battery!!!! Need to wait the next episode :)
Lionel, race would have been better if I didn't flat, more exciting, but passing 12 wasn't exciting at all, LMAO.
Dude is basically 5 minutes behind out of the water.....pulls 410W up the steepest part of the course to pass the lead group whom is mostly cheating. I feel a Lionel/Jan showdown on the horizon....
I wouldn't kid too much about the bike changes .. the powers that be are likely to confiscate and tear it down looking for a motor. Especially if you race in France.
It would be interesting to hear what blood values are 3 weeks after coming Down from altitute 🤷🏽♂️
@20:17 lol, that ending reminded me of the scene from True Lies: ruclips.net/video/GR3xaeE7oLc/видео.html 🤣
For a well-paid pro athlete, you'd think he'd dire a pro manager to book his airBnB's and set up his bike.
If you're bike is going to be sitting in the sun, then maybe don't put the tire on until the morning. I mean, have the pro do it in the morning. I've never heard a pro cyclist biotch about race organizing affecting their bikes. The pro triathletes don't make the same money without the 3,000 age-groupers at the race; that's the audience; that's the pitch-group for all the sponsors. The pros will have to "accommodate" them.
And there is just no way in the world to determine "how" the tire was "bad". Hey, maybe a fellow competitor did something. Maybe, hire personal bike security as well. Deciding you've figured it all out from the dozen's of possibilities and have the solution ("all the organizer's fault") is a little over the top.
Congrats on the win, Lionel. Well done.
Plase note that the primary benefit of high-altitude is not increased Hematocrit and RBC-count but the amount of Hb (not concentration), i.e. total hemoglobin mass. Which you don't measure with a blood test. A bit surprising you're drawing the conclusion "no blood benefit" with that data, which has a high day-2-day variability and confounding factors. Just want the best!
i dont know if you ever read the comments but i will say that, ehhh chill you will get the world title sooner or later if you keep doing this, its probably just a timing question. btw do you havr strava that we can follow your workouts?
It's gonna be savage in a few days!!! Hope to fist bump you there, Lionel ;) Time to unleash!!
Brilliant smile. You look amazing even without a that tooth! (:
It’s ok man, I chipped my tooth almost exactly the same way as a kid on the side of the swimming pool. It’s long fixed though and my dentist and I have great banter that my tooth story is only the 2nd funniest he’s encountered. First place is taken by the girlfriend of his friend in med school, and involved the couple and their bathroom sink. But I am now 100% prepared to accept bronze.
If nothing happened to that plow truck driver that is unreal.
Of course it's your fault you were just outside on your bicycle.
There is no excuse for hitting someone on a bicycle with a vehicle. They have fucking brakes.
Imagine a pro triathlete jokes about a broken tooth and a mullet emoji appears and we are all laughing until he gets on the bike and obliterates a 12-man train of triathletes who are all professionals and were two-and-a-half minutes up from the start of the leg. Lionel had a training session to put it lightly with a downgraded front wheel AND some of the Pros were drafting illegally. Had Lionel not dealt with the flat, he would have won the race by seven minutes (assuming he didn't smash the bike from the start and left everyone in his dust). The race was over at 13:36 when he dropped the hammer.
How was the race?
Lionel: "Meh"
If you were a Pro in this race and let Lionel fly past you, just retire man.
Do not bring a gun to a knife fight.
Lionel we will miss you at the Challenge Roth 2022 very much, too bad you do not start here, all the best. Hope next year it works.
Why are you surprised, Lionel is 'The Canadian Brawler '...!
Honestly one of the most remarkable performances I have ever seen. So inspiring Lionel!
Thank you and the rest of the team for having a sense humour and putting out such a great piece of content.
How does someone clip another person in a ironman wtf. Guy should be dq for future races. It's not a Crit lol
I thought he would say the roads where so bad in the province of Québec that his tooth fell off. I live just on the side of Québec on the NB border and we can see a clear difference on the quality of the roads.
First few minute of this were pure gold 🤣 Hats off to a dominant win! You jinxed yourself with the flat and it didn't matter.
Dude, stop getting into accidents. JUST STOP
Lionel is an animal. As someone who’s lost my two front teeth, and I’m an addict…I wonder how Lionel is able to do what he does.
What a tease at the end 🤣
What a RACE! Hope the new teeth will be an easyer one! Thanks for sharing! Thanks to Talbot! :-)
LMAO clearly you have superpowers for mayhem
Is the microphone actually clipped onto his chest hair?
So do pros not have to fix flats themselves?
Sometimes yes if the wheel support is not close by. He was lucky in this instance they were right there leaving transition.
LS: behold a man in full! Love it!
Lionel, you're 100% ready for the UFC after triathlon with that missing tooth
And then the Stanley Cup!
Hot sun on tires? Put old towels on ‘em so they don’t “melt” in the sun.
Wait no really, why did he change his bike?
Is that crash a joke or is it serious 😮
It happened in Windsor. 2009
LMFAO the best ending so far T!
Amazing race. Great job keeping it all together when most of us would have lost our shit!
28 days is not enough time at altitude…
Lol i can tell he is on some strong medications 😅
Man, its soo good to see you win Lionel. Following you for years and I am deeply inspired by your journey! Hang loose & greets from Berlin (Germany)!
Looking like a pro hockey player!
freak beast!! but so humble and grateful. love this dude. thanks for sharing all this Lionel and Talbot. and Go Erin!
I’m new to the triathlon world. What does Lionel mean when he says “take out”?
I think he means the start of the swim race.
Amazing watching you eat the competitors like a cannibal - and with that spare wheel! 👏🏻 Toothless totally worth it.
Gear Q: I wonder about the monitor I’ve seen on your upper arm? Also interested in the waterproof music player in your Arizona pool video. Triathletes love new gadgets 😅
Did you seriously only win 4000 dollars for that effort? IM is so flipping cheap. And zero internet coverage. They should have passed a collection basket around the crowd to help the pros.
A smile like that, would guarantee a flawless transition into Ice Hockey.....
