If you have a spare Afternoon, you should come down to Enchenbach-Alsenborn. There's a TON of nice little hiking trails in the woods! One of them goes down to the lake Eiswoog. It's a bit long, but is a perfect way to spend an afternoon.
After a year in Idar-Oberstein, moved to K-town and was there the first time from June 1980 to November, 1982. I chose to return from 1986-89 - doesn't seem that long ago. I remember some parts but many places seem to have changed. Different time - and it seems the city if different (although just as nice).
I liked your video. I lived in Kaiserslautern from 1983 - 1991 when I was a kid and my dad was in the USAF. He was at different times stationed at Sembach, Kapaun, and Ramstein. I went to Vogelweh Elementary school, Kaiserslautern Jr. High School, and graduated from Kaiserslautern High School. We lived in Vogelweh in what it sounds like people now call “The Stairwells”. Vogelweh used to be completely open and no ID required to get inside. In that immediate area only Kapaun was gated. I first lived in 1143G and after 6 months moved to 1107G (fourth floor). 1107 is gone now and replaced with some town homes. We used to go to the AYA, bowling alley, skating rink, and theater in Vogelweh, and there used to be a big Exchange, food court, and commissary where the new high school is now. The Globus used to be Massa. Karstadt was another popular German store. Downtown, The Alte and the Flash were popular night spots. The Combined Club in Landstuhl, The Lazer, and Moanas in Miesau were also popular at different times. If you can, please post some vlogs of what Vogelweh / Kapaun / Pulaski Barracks / Sembach / Ramstein are like now. I’m sure all the people who used to be stationed there as well as all of the military brats would like to see what it all looks like now. Thank you!
Sean Ellis wow! This is so awesome. Fun fact: vogelweh elementary just got a whole new building. I love that idea. I’ll see what I can do, I’m not sure if I’m allowed to film on base, but I’ll do my best to capture it so you guys can see how much it has changed now. People that have been stationed here before always talk about the old times!
Since it’s the 4th, it reminds me that the area on Vogelweh now where the new high school track / football / athletic complex is used to be a big open field of just grass. The military always put on a big Fourth of July fest and fireworks show there every year. In high school, we always had our homecoming bonfire there. Is there still a big fest out on in Vogelweh for the 4th, or is everything like that pretty much on Ramstein now?
Sean Ellis I’m sad to report that everything is at Ramstein now. That would be awesome to have one at vogelweh too. Sadly, nothing this year though because of restrictions 👎🏽 but we attended last year and it was a lot of fun!
You’re so lucky to live there. I really loved growing up there and miss it a lot, although a lot has changed since the Cold War ended and an all of the force reductions and base closings happened. I still get my wife to make as close to true Jagerschnitzel as we can here in the states for me and I’ve introduced my kids to spezi and mezzo mix. Enjoy every minute of your time there. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your vlogs!
Sean Ellis We have been loving every second of it here and aren’t taking anything for granted. There’s plenty more to come! Thanks for watching, it means so much ☺️
I lived in Kaiserslautern in early 70s Army brat here 😆 lol.... I was 9-10 yrs old, very cool memories though!! Love the woods n castle ruins, adventuring....
Hope you’re enjoying Kaiserslautern while you’re there. Such a great place to be stationed because it’s so close to so many places. I lived there 1999-2001 and things changed dramatically after 9/11 (on base). The city put up giant fish sculptures throughout the city when I was there in celebration of their 200 year anniversary. Are they still located throughout the town?
Yes! They’re still here and we love seeing all the different ones all around the city. I’ve heard many people talk about how much things have changed since 9/11. We are very grateful for this experience!
I have tried 3 times to go to the Japanese garden. The first time, plans got cancelled. The second time, my sister threw up and we had to go home. The 3rd time, corona got in the way, and we haven't been able to go since. I have been here 4 years, and have only seen the outside.
I lived in the city center from 1984 to 1988 two blocks from the main train station. The only violence if you would call it that was when the workers had a strike/protest at the train station and the police brought in the water cannons. Although the cannons were quite loud, the crowd treated it as a comedy of errors and ran up and down the street as the water shot their way. There was even some laughter! Otherwise, the streets were safe 24 hours a day.
I was searching through Google but only the FC team popped up and your video shows that the city has a calm and clean atmosphere! I might study in the city this fall. Are there many foreigners in the city? Thanks for the video!

Yes, there is a lot of street parking, but there’s plenty of parking garages. However, streets and parking garages are smaller here so big cars may be hard to maneuver here. Not impossible, but just a heads up.
Was stationed here had a great time. Was a MP military policemen. This was in 1966-68. Loved this town. Food and night life was great.
