Honestly, What's The Big Deal About Taylor Swift?

  • One of the biggest selling artists of all time has released a new album this week, yes indeed it's Taylor Swift. I don't cover pop artists much on this channel but I do think we can learn a lot from looking at what the appeal is of these megastars. Both her new singles are trending here on RUclips at Number 1 & 2. So, what's the big deal? Why and how is she so popular? Let's have a look and see.

Out of curiosity, who comes up with the titles for your videos? Sometimes they feel like they're disconnected from the actual content and don't sound like something you'd actually say. Your reviews, even for things like Limp Bizkit, are fair and kind. But a lot of times, the titles for the videos are more hyperbolic. Are they just to grab attention, or is there something I'm missing?

@@eamobyrne1 it's a shame, because I really enjoy the videos. But the titles are a little offputting and I don't really know what to expect when I click on them. I'd much rather they be more direct: Taylor Swift's Anti-Hero: first watch and analysis. Or something similar.

I’m a professional musician. I’ve been a session player for some of the best North American Improvisational (Jazz) Artists and I took my daughter to see her on the Reputation Tour, with a bit of a, “Oh God, save me.”, attitude. I was floored. Not just by her performance, but how she clearly connects to her audience like no one I’ve ever seen. She actually cares.. I mean to the best of her ability considering the circumstances. Anyway, I’m a bigger fan than my daughter. Have been since that concert. I’m a bigger Swifty than my now, 20 year old daughter. Like she legit rolls her eyes at me. This woman is a genius songwriter. Not due to complexity or advance theory, harmony and melody. But due to the fact she writes about herself in such an honest way that her fans feel like they actually know her. That and the fact from the age of 12 she knew how to write a good hook. What’s not to admire?🤷🏽‍♂️😂🤣

There are a zillion swifities, but the vast majority of swifties are NOT superfans of her pop radio hits. Most swifities are superfans of her songs that you rarely, if ever, hear on the radio. If you have listened to all or most of such albums as folklore, evermore, Midnights, Reputation, and Red and you still don't like her music, then it's just a matter of personal taste and you happen to be out of sync with the zillions of swifties who can shoot a song to #1 even if "the song" is just 8 seconds of static. But if you have not heard the deeper cuts, then there is a high probability that you are a swiftie who just doesn't realize it yet. (That was me - a 65 year old Metallica fan - up until February 2023 when I did a deep dive into TS). Prescription: sample a variety of deep cuts from assorted albums to see if you still don't understand the appeal.
Bottomline: The key to understanding the TS phenomenon is realizing that it's the deep cuts - not the radio hits - that drive the swifties to fanaticism (and one could argue that being a mastermind in the music industry has also helped put her in this position).

The difference between good pop music and bad pop music can be a fine line as the production choices are so similar but all these songs sound great on an acoustic guitar or a piano which, I think, is the litmus test to see whether a song is actually good or not. TS writes great songs and her lyrics are underrated. Folklore is a masterpiece but "Lover" might be the best 'pop' album of the decade. What is it about Taylor Swift? Two of my grand daughters can already sing six of her songs and I heard Begin Again recently and the tears started rolling down my cheeks. No song has ever done this to me before. I listened to it 3 times and the tears kept coming- the lyrics, melody ,music? There's just something so special about her voice. Thankfully i listened to it a few days later with a slight moistening of the eyes achieved and that was that. Phew! I thought i was becoming an emotional softie :) Thanks anyway Ms. Swift

Very seriously? Every artist owes her for taking on the music industry and getting the rights to their own work. When people say "Taylor Swift is the music industry", they mean it. One of my favorite Clash songs is Complete Control.... and she fixed that con job for them. Every generation has their version of that song. And now, every artist benefits from her winning that war. Respect that woman for what she did for everyone.

You bringing up listening to songs in the car with your daughter reminds me of when me and my mom would drive around, singing along with songs like "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" on the radio. It made me cry a little, honestly. Your daughter will treasure those memories with you for the rest of her life, she just doesn't know it yet. Anyway, riding around with mom in the car singing instilled in me a sneaky love of Steely Dan that I hid all thru my punk years. It also planted the dreaded musician seed. Taylor Swift's okay by me. I don't know any of her songs, but I guess I'll have a listen now.

So you answered one of my questions about music you and your daughter share. At the height of the TS frenzy, I took my then tween daughter to her first stadium concert on the Fearless tour. We couldn't even get seats together, so as I did the mom panic (don't think there was much texting back then, and she probably didn't have a phone), I marvelled at the incredible production value of this tour and wondered about the intense pressure someone her age must have been feeling with a 12 truck convoy that constituted her stage gear. (I had inadvertently driven down into the wrong underground parking lot, ending up where those trucks were and was politely escorted out.) You have compelled me to take a listen to this new album. My favourite song by TS is The Best Day, a perfect song for me about our mother-daughter relationship. Makes me cry like a baby (especially after a few cocktails) as I wax poetic about her growing up. My daughter hasn't been to a TS concert in years, but we have been to many The Darkness shows, so I thank thee for that!

I know I'm hardly the target audience for Taylor Swift, but I'm baffled by her popularity. The best explanation I can come up with is that it's Instagram set to music.

Ben, I'm 49 next month and IMO her album Folklore is damn good. Dare you to listen to it and tell me what you think 👍

Tried .... there's a synthetic quality to her voice and lyrics that I get stuck on. Singers like PJ Harvey, Gillian Welch, Mavis Staples, not to mention Memphis Minnie, Rosetta Tharp, Billie, Joni and Ella are real to me. Taylor Swift seems more like a symptom of something troubling in America.

@@tcpip9999 All great singers. None who started this century (maybe Gillian?). I think Taylor started her career in a more factory processed way but she's emerged as an artist in her own right. Her voice might be pretty and she'll never sit alongside your list of "real" artists but she's still got talent.

I think Taylor Swift is without a doubt the best artist of my generation. She breaks records all the time and sells more albums than anyone. I've been a fan since 2008/2009.

Having a huge fan base is NOT indicative of having talent. Her voice isn't even that good. She has sold more records than a bunch of artist. Coltrane, Davis, Pass but she doesn't have their talent.

Yeah. I have nothing against Taylor Swift in person, she has a pleasant voice and seems to be a good human. But the songs are so boring, after 20 seconds you know it all. I know, I know. I don't have to listen...Do I have to ask myself why I would rather take the Momsen when I have to choose one of the Taylors?
