- Before we enter the new year, here’s a compilation of all the trains I filmed in the months of September, October, November, and December. Most shots are from Chicago, but some are from Central Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, and Minnesota.

The reason for the SC-44 having a high pitched horn is because they don't really take care of the engine horn witch means don't some of the horns get messed up. And this is called a fouled horn
I always wondered why the sc44 varied when it came to the horn sound
Thanks for the compilation! Maybe for 2023 you could do a rail fanner's day in Chicago where you show us the public venues for choice views and train rides and show the nearby attractions and places to eat? That way us out-of-towners can come in with a plan for a day of railing and spotting forewarned. What would be cool is a vid of destinations and rail rides to get to all the viewing positions. Chicago and Wisconsin would be great for this.
Hey, that’s actually a great idea! I’m gonna work on that. Thanks!
@@Thom-TRA Thank you! Because I only get day trips to Chicagoland a few times a year, and none of my friends are big rail fans, so if I knew a list of L routs to take to viewing spots, I could get a better Chicago rail experience in the few hours I might get to myself when I'm in town. It's entirely selfish. :)
Thom, just offering a glimpse of the Metra engine in Chicago and Northwestern livery made my day. And before that I noticed the lead engine of another Metra train painted in the Milwaukee Road livery. (I'll get better with utilizing the correct RR jargon when describing what I see) Thank you for this video. Happy New Year Thom, Lindsey, and Baer! Maybe see you in or watch your videos about rail transit in San Francisco when you hopefully visit in 2023.
I recently got the chance to experience riding in the venture rail car on the 318 Missouri River Runner going to CHI after spending the day in St. Louis. I really enjoyed the ride, but boarding the rail car was a bit difficult for accessibility reasons. The railing stopped short before the top step, forcing me to reach over and grab where the automatic door opens and closes. Not the smartest or safest thing to do, but I had no other choice since the conductor was helping me from behind.
Thank you so much for a truly stunning video ! There are so many highlights, but the re-liveried F59PHI #90 in C&NW livery was fabulous ! The glimpse of the North Star Commuter rail was great also, and I look forward to your full report !
Happy new year.
You won’t have to wait long for the Northstar report…
Happy New Year!
Great job on the video Thom. I really enjoy your RUclips channel and all of your videos.
Thom I wish a happy and healthy new year to you and your wife.
Happy new year to you and yours as well! Thanks for your kind comments!
Can’t wait for your report on the Saluki!😂🎉😅
The video will cover the Saluki, but it might not be a trip report in the sense you’re expecting…
Thom, @ 4:50, The Pere Marquette does not stop in Kalamazoo. She stops in Bangor, MI about 30 miles west just off M-43 which eventually becomes West Main St. in Kalamazoo.
I know that, I just made a typo. Also I would call the Pere Marquette a he, since it’s named after a Father (the Pere part).
I've only ever driven through Chicago, and only two times. But I'll be there soon arriving on the southwest chief, any suggestions of things to see within walking distance of the train? I'll be staying one night near the Willis tower, I plan on checking that out as well as Grant Park, which looks like it has an amazing skatepark, to bad it's winter, I'll be back in the summer though too. Anything else worth checking out?
It's funny you mentioned the horn pitch on the Blue Water. I can always tell when it's going by my house as opposed to a freight train because of this.
But it’s so different from the Wolverine, even though it’s the same locomotive. I was confused haha.
3:22 That Is One Fouled Horn On IDTX 4626. I Am Not Sure If I Dislike 4626, CDTX 2104, Or 2118’s Horn More. Nice Catches Though.
... Oh speaking of the South Shore Line, I saw a South Shore tank car pass thru the yard here in Tucson Az.
That’s bizarre…
@@Thom-TRA Yeah, I was riding my bike to work which runs along the Union Pacific switch yard and at first noticed the orange lettering on black background, and then saw South Shore Line ... Wow! The train was most likely going to LA.
Nice video, as usual. Just curious: what hardware and software do you use to create your videos? Windows? Mac? iMovie? And what camera do you use for shooting the video? Here's to a happy, safe, healthy, and train-filled New Year in 2023! Maybe by December, 2023 you'll reach 24K subscribers!
Hi Thom, happy new year to you guys. You had captioned the Pere Marquette as being at Kalamazoo. Was that a reroute? Also I don’t think I have seen you guys take a day trip to Milwaukee. It is a nice place to walk around fir a day with some nice museums
Oops, that was a mistake. It was actually at St. Joseph, MI.
Awesome catches man!!! Feel free to hmu next time you’re in the area
What area would that be?
Chicago Area my bad!
@@willstrainsplanes I live here
Most European locomotives have a driving cab at both ends but North American ones don't so it must make it difficult for when the loco is running light and has to reverse.
Why does every Amtrak train that goes to Chicago terminate at Chicago Union?
Because that’s the Amtrak station
What if Amtrak buys off every station of Metra commuter?
