Just to answer the question of "How do they breathe?" Pyreflies (The representation of the soul) permeate the water and actually offset a person's need to breathe while underwater. This is also used in the Blitzspheres where they also help congeal the water into its shape. Tl;Dr: They consume the souls of the fallen.
