this video helped me out. the 5 piece detail tools helped out a lot. My wife's is a 2008 dodge calibur sxt. i was able to go in by taking off the tire for more room, and just taking a few bolts off the mud flap and pull it to the side. my switch is different from yours and the replacement didn't match up exactly and was a tight fit. but it worked. so if any of you folks run into this problem i used a clamp to the switch down the rest of the way. also i pulled all the switches and the one was clearly worn and slightly corroded. You can access the relay without detaching the bumper, just remove the left side front flap and you’ll have access to it. Checking wires will be harder without removing bumper as the spot is quite tight, however removing and installing a new relay is easy enough
Thank for the comment, I appreciate the feedback. I found it very Difficult to reattach the relay cover after I reattached the bumper. Personally while it's possible to access the relay without removing the bumper. I would still remove the bumper so I can see what I am doing.
I agree you can easily access it by removing the inner wheel well and the relay box pops right off there are 2 clips that you push in behind it and it comes right out giving enough room to inspect the wires and relay box. If you need any additional room remove the wheel and you can get right in there.

Could you please maybe give me some advice? I'm a Veteran and I can barely afford to feed myself right now until I get this car paid off in about 2 more months.... 2008 Dodge Caliber I had the battery checked twice and the alternator checked once and AutoZone told me the battery was good, and then the other place told me the alternator was good and that the battery wasn't holding a charge...So I figured maybe Autozone was wrong and spent $200 on a battery, I had to take out a lone to buy it because I'm a Veteran living on $1500 a month. 6 months later I got to crank up the car and it won't turn over, so I think damn the battery is dead again...but it's not but a few days from being 6 months old....so I removed the terminals from it and it snowed so I waited about 2 days for it to warm up and the snow to start thawing and so I go back out there to see if it would still turn on it and it wouldn't. So not knowing anyone with jumper cables I had my neighbor take me to go back to where I bought the battery. The guy followed me home and connected a battery with terminals on it he says will jump of his huge truck, but when I open the door and put in the key nothing turned on at all....not even the dashboard, no clicking nothing. He told me it was obviously something else other then the battery....If the battery had completely died or was damaged would it still do this? He insisted that I have a tow truck haul it up there so he could run some tests on it, but I have a feeling he may just be trying to scam me. So I'm going to take the battery up to Autozone again and have them test it.
@@kenithj76 Yeah, it was the battery terminals they were made out of some cheap alloy and eventually broke while I was tightening them. I had to manually strip the wires and replace the terminal heads or leads or whatever they call them. I really had to stretch the wire to get it to fit because they didn't give me any slack to play with. The car is still running but I'm having electrical problems, either from the wire being stretched too tight for so long or maybe I have some exposed or crossed wires somewhere.

If it is the same issue as the one I had, remove the same relay that I did. That should fix your issue as well. Just checking your car does not try and turnover at when you turn the ignition? (It's the one I am pointing to in the thumbnail for this video.)
If you can here the engine trying to turnover you may need to test your starter/ battery / alternator. If when you turn your key you only see dash lights turn on and don't hear anything from the engine it is likely the relay.

each of the locations I have found this part it is always referred to as "relay" If you really want to buy it from Auto Zone then I would recommend taking the relay with you to the store. otherwise if you can wait a little bit for it you can purchase it off of Amazon. If you have a 2017 Dodge Caliber then you can purchase it for a third of the price using the below link: 1. Standard Motor Products RY438 Relay amzn.to/35T1lPD 2. Standard Motor Products RY116 Relay amzn.to/34zEIzf In my honest opinion I would remove the relay then search for it on Amazon so that you can save some money. not sure if you watched the part when I talk about the two relay's I found on Amazon but I noticed that both worked just fine and it was still cheaper then going to the auto store and purchasing one there.
It is possible but I do not know what the other relays connect to. If I would have swapped them around the the car may not have started. On that note if you have a second vehicle from the same manufacturer you could check and see if it has the same type of relay so you can run a test.

@@billie-grantdo you have the Amazon link for the part and if so could you please post it
Thanks for the video, I’m really happy; you just confirmed that I may just have frozen gas lines. Greeting from Alberta btw lol
Not sure how this video confirms a gas line issue.. but I am glad it helped!
@@billie-grant I poured the gas line antifreeze into my tank AFTER the cold snap has frozen everything then I thought it subsequently melt everything. It didn't and your video towards the end confirmed to me that my lines ultimately needed heat to flow freely again. Which they did as soon as the temperatures got above freezing down from -20F. So that's how you helped
Just a suggestion. Just pull the tire and the inner fender skirt next time. Much easier than pulling the bumper. God Bless.
Please tell me these same syptoms could be whats wrong with y avenger? I guess i bought a lemon from a dealer who stiffed me so im stuck with it on my property with no way of knowing whats wrong .
the fact that it is a dodge it is likely the same issue. however I do not have an avenger and not sure if the relays are in the same location. but if it was made in the same time frame it is possible that it could be. Good luck!
I just changed the ignition switch on my 2011. It turns over but doesn't sound very good. I am not sure what the problem is right now. Any suggestions?
The first relay is for the fan....the one u pull I start my 2007 sxt 2.0 caliber without the relay.
So Your Saying Your Car Started After Taking The Third Box Out
@@devantemcqueen5678 no, just saying that's, not the one for the starter.the starter relay is build in the computer board.once it goes bad u need to get the small yellow wire from starter and connected it to the ignition that get current only when u try to start the car.. wire is a vio/brown in steering wheel.
Interesting, I wonder if something was changed in your model. Because my car won't start with out a good relay plugged in.
@@billie-grant maybe not sure, on my 2010 sxt caliber it's the thirds relay for starter
After that would the fuel pump be the next thing to check on if that dont work
Hello Bill Giovanni from Philly. Thanks again for the video. I also have a
My relay was corrosed and brokrn pin...i resoldered direct to the relay, so i don t need to replaced it. Thank.
Your welcome!
This video was very helpful thank you
Your very welcome! I am glad that I was able to help you with your issue.
I change the relay, buy it from autozone, install it and it works fine, although it makes the same failure once a week. Will it be the relay because it is not original?
Since I made this video I have been using the same relay I purchased from Amazon. If you are still having this issue. It is likely a different issue.
it may be a short in a wire or something that is blowing the relay.
Thanks for your input!
Get a shop vac pull the relays and vacuum the thing that the relays plug into for 2 min!

Im a bit confused, so i need 2 different relays and they both work?
Thank you Billy great video 👍
Noah you are very welcome!
That was very helpful I appreciate it
Do you have to disconnect the battery when swiping the relay? I put in new relay & my 2007 caliber wont start. Mechanic told me he has to reprogram the pcm, 1100$
Thank you, I have the same problem
What's the name of this relay?? I'm having the same issue
when I purchased the relay from amazon I did not know the name so I looked for ones that looked similar and tried them. the two I purchased where:
1. Standard Motor Products RY438 Relay
2. Standard Motor Products RY116 Relay
as noted in the video both relays worked and I was able to start my Caliber once installed.
Great …will remember this
I replaced mine and got it to turn over. I drove it around the block and I'm going to try more contact cleaner
Amazing video. Thank you so much!
Thank you for the compliment. I am glad you liked the video. Hopefully your issue is resolved!
Mine is a 2011 dodge caliber..is it same spot as othe rmodels
Do you know what number is the headlight relay?
I'm having a similar issue as well except my 08 dodge caliber takes about 10 seconds to turn over but it cranks. But the check engine light flashes when I drive it.
If you are able to still drive your car I would take it to a auto parts store Napa / auto zone ... And ask them to do a diagnostic test.
A flashing check engine light is critical. The vehicle should be stopped immediately.
Wonder if the transmission went out.
Did you ever figure out what it was, mine does the same thing. Turns over but takes forever to crank
hi got 2007 dodge calibre what to no how many fuse box they are in this vehicle?
and got problem on my dash speed meter indicators light working but they're not working by the headlamp and rear light , also I have changed all the indicators bulbs still same problems, also the 1 fuse by the battery that only I can see
I need help please
where did you purchase the starter relay i am having difficulty finding a store that carries one.
Amazon should be a link in the description.
Hey, did your car dash lights freak out before you stoped driving last time?
Honestly my wife uses the caliber so I don't know if the dash lights did anything strange.
Mine was. I just replaced starter alternator and battery terminals and it's doing it again. I though ground but I can't find where
Have you ever had limp mode issues ?
muchas gracias, yo tengo el mismo problema
I finally had enough, extended the wires and moved the stupid thing up into the engine compartment.
Damn you should hahaha
Wow thanks for the great video ,but what a place to put a relay box .this is as bad as working on a VW beetle second gen .
Is that for the fuel pump
super et merci jai caliber 1.8 de 2007
I keep getting a warning light that key in ignition, when it’s not. Any ideas?
Did you set the lightning bolt light on the dash panel when this issue occurred.
I didn't see or set a lightning bolt setting with this issue.
What is the lightning bolt light? It's on in my caliber
@@bolerdweller Lightning bolt means the electruc throttle control is having an issue
@@robfowler7858 maybe... or maybe not... ive had a zillion things going haywire with my 09 caliber... bought a new battery, AAA said alternator was good, but lightning bolt had been on for awhile and I was having issues. tried all the free diagnostics but they couldn't get any codes! so mechanic's $155 electronic deep diagnostic only came up with one thing.. the starter. so paid for that one... then car worked for about a day and then died again. called AAA out to check again and they said battery good starter good but alternator bad but that didnt make sense since it started! and since then it has come alive for a day of driving at least twice before dying again so....... help?!?! what do u think it is now? im thinking its a fuse or relay issue too since i was having weird horn issues too! thanks!
i have exact the same problem. one relay didnt work for me , maybe i have to tray to replace them all?
I love it. thank you.
Could you please maybe give me some advice? I'm a Veteran and I can barely afford to feed myself right now until I get this car paid off in about 2 more months....
2008 Dodge Caliber
I had the battery checked twice and the alternator checked once and AutoZone told me the battery was good, and then the other place told me the alternator was good and that the battery wasn't holding a charge...So I figured maybe Autozone was wrong and spent $200 on a battery, I had to take out a lone to buy it because I'm a Veteran living on $1500 a month.
I pulled out the relay and it has odd markings on two of the connectors that looks a bit like burns.
If your relay has burn marks on them you may need to replace it.
@@billie-grant Thanks, I'll keep that in mind
@@unrealdevop did you get your car going?
@@kenithj76 Yeah, it was the battery terminals they were made out of some cheap alloy and eventually broke while I was tightening them. I had to manually strip the wires and replace the terminal heads or leads or whatever they call them. I really had to stretch the wire to get it to fit because they didn't give me any slack to play with. The car is still running but I'm having electrical problems, either from the wire being stretched too tight for so long or maybe I have some exposed or crossed wires somewhere.
Хороший авто,ездию на таком уже 5 лет
I have the same car, mine starts but my lowbeams wont turn on high beams work. I checked the fuses there good. Not the relays yet. Changed my bulbs. Any ideas?
Great and good
Thank you!
Do I need both relays in the description or it's interchangeable
Either i did not know which one to buy so i tried both. They both work.
@@billie-grant tell me what the difference between Relay and TIPM module?
@Pascal Dassie I am not sure I have never heard of a TIPM module. FYI I am not a mechanic. I am just a guy who shared how to fix an issue I had with my car.
What one is the turn signal rely?
to be honest I am not a mechanic and not sure without researching online.
Hey I like the video it’s helped me in a way. My issue is almost like yours. How can I figure out which little fuse would be the issue?
If it is the same issue as the one I had, remove the same relay that I did. That should fix your issue as well. Just checking your car does not try and turnover at when you turn the ignition? (It's the one I am pointing to in the thumbnail for this video.)
Well it gets the electricity and ignites but it doesn’t have the power to turn on
If you can here the engine trying to turnover you may need to test your starter/ battery / alternator. If when you turn your key you only see dash lights turn on and don't hear anything from the engine it is likely the relay.
Any luck with your car?
No luck man I was hoping maybe it’d be something with the fuse or throttle body
Yeah cus I’m having the same problem mines a 2007 and it does exactly what your did when trying to start I spent 163 on a new battery and it still doesn’t start so I’m thinking it’s that
Отличное видео
Hi what's that relay called I went to auto zone and the guy doesn't know what is called he was no help
each of the locations I have found this part it is always referred to as "relay" If you really want to buy it from Auto Zone then I would recommend taking the relay with you to the store. otherwise if you can wait a little bit for it you can purchase it off of Amazon.
If you have a 2017 Dodge Caliber then you can purchase it for a third of the price using the below link:
1. Standard Motor Products RY438 Relay amzn.to/35T1lPD
2. Standard Motor Products RY116 Relay amzn.to/34zEIzf
In my honest opinion I would remove the relay then search for it on Amazon so that you can save some money. not sure if you watched the part when I talk about the two relay's I found on Amazon but I noticed that both worked just fine and it was still cheaper then going to the auto store and purchasing one there.
Did I answer your question?
Could you have pulled one of the other relays to see if that was the problem before buying one
It is possible but I do not know what the other relays connect to. If I would have swapped them around the the car may not have started. On that note if you have a second vehicle from the same manufacturer you could check and see if it has the same type of relay so you can run a test.
@@billie-grant no i dont , but i was told that the other relays just work other things and i should be able to. Was hoping someone tried it
If that is the case go ahead and try.
@@billie-grant i am going to this weekend. I will post results

Question I changed the relay put new starter and alternator and my car still won't start any suggestions
The only thing that comes to mind is the connections, or cables.
Maybe tipm failed
I'm about to light mine on fire... lol
Is the relay aka the TIPM??
Not sure what a TIPM is, so I am not sure.
Yes, this relay is for tipm and for fan too
Do you have a link to the one you bought?
This looks like it sucked to do thank goodness mines already broken 😂😂😱 the butterfly clips
It wasn't that difficult. Just time consuming!

What is the name of the box where the connector goes?
