@Jürg Hölzle I absolutely agree. ELP is so close behind. I place Yes just a tad higher because their music like Awaken and Turn Of The Century makes me cry on command because of how intricate and delicate the parts are. The emotion it brings. Yes sought out to reach God. ELP sought out to create the most victorious compositions man make could create. They did just that. Both bands reached the highest pinnacle of musical/compositional creation. We will never see anything like them again.
Possibly the most majestic piece of music ever created - - truly a song for all the ages of humanity both past and future.
Recorded in Montreaux, Switzerland from October 1976 to April 1977 the album 'Going For The One' (and this song in particular) is one of the most beautiful things ever recorded. Nothing will ever be like it, ever.
This song is an absolute masterpiece, there is no other word to describe it. Of course you could say it is euphoric, joyful, transcendental, mesmeric, even a religious experience, out of body experience but it all adds up to being a complete masterpiece. I have lost count of the times I have listened to this piece of music and yet I still have tears in my eyes after it finished. Also thank you for not pausing the song to give comments, respect the music, listen to the piece and then react, much respect to you both for that

In 1992 I went to my very first concert - the Yes Re-Union tour. All 8 member of Yes were on stage. They played Awaken - and it was an awesome, spiritual experience. The middle section, where the organ moves into Steve's guitar was and is fantastic.
My best friend Jim took me to the concert. The next year Jim was killed in an automobile accident.
The last lines of Awaken, "like the time I ran away, turned around and you were standing close to me." That is my buddy Jim "standing close to me".

Yes, invokes many feelings within their composistions. So sad for your loss, but it is wonderful that Yes can bring to you fond memories of times past and friendship lost but always remembered.
Jon Anderson once said that YES was trying to create music that would leave the audience in stunned silence when it was over. That's exactly how AWAKEN affects me every single time I listen to it, without even a single exception.
Yes no doubt. Even Bill Bruford said on the Union tour playing this masterpiece, he said Yes no doubt hit their highest pinnacle of musical expression with this piece of music. He was sad to miss the creation of it but was overjoyed to at least be part of it to play it live. The laugh in rehearsal was, "so this is what you guys were up too while I was gone"
I cry EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
Yeah. Me too. In fact I do not listen to it often. it is far too special for just cheap, daily entertainment. It is the Holy Ground of YES. I am a fully committed Christian. I have been in the presence of God more times than I can remember. But I find that today, the popular Christian music is usually not particularly engaging. The music of YES simply expresses how I feel about Jesus, even if that is not THEIR intent. It is the music it is deep and energetic and just downright inspiring.
Imagine being a teenager in the 70's listening to "Yes" albums. Even now in 2021 there is nothing like them, so this track was totally mind blowing when it was first released. So glad you finally got around to hearing this incredible piece of music. It's a stunning album, and with the return of Rick Wakeman, we fans couldn't get to the record stores fast enough to grab our copy. Great reaction. Thankyou.
My favorite band of all time. No one was like them or ever will be. Often copied but never duplicated.
44 years, and it still hasn't lost its POWER. I just saw a RUclips video of the church in Vevey Switzerland (St. Martin's Cathedral) where the organ is a treasure. It was really interesting seeing them perform this in concert. I was lucky enough to see it about four or five times. When the bass pedals combined with the organ chords oh, the sound beats against your chest like a rocket lifting off. It was a physical sensation as much as it was a sound. I can think of no more magnificent piece of music recorded in my lifetime
You're right my friend, all of us who were teenagers in the 70's were fascinated and moved by all this wonderful music. Even today with my 61 years old I continue to enjoy and have fun. Sorry for my poor english

South Side of the Sky is just as good. Roundabout on this album steals the thunder of "better" proggy songs. (Long Distance Runaround is also good but more of a jam than ultra proggy)
Keyboard player Rick Wakeman was awarded the Prize of Best Keyboard Player in history of Progressive Rock a couple of years ago. Rick recorded the organ section at Saint Martin Church in Vevey, Switzerland.
First of all ,I love your reaction to this masterpiece. There is and probably never will be a group of this magnificent instrumentalists and composers and vocalist in the history of music. They have left a legacy on the music industry for what they have created. I was totally blown away at the age of 17 in 1978 when I saw them live in Ft. Worth. I was literally not expecting to have my mind blown out to where I couldn’t comprehend what I had just seen and heard. My all time favorite song ever.
There has never been a greater accomplishment in music than the recording of this 'song'. Even the Moody Blues would be hard pressed to do something on a par with this.
The voice of Jon Anderson gives me chills every time 😍❤
One of the very few bands that could actually reduce me to tears… i can’t really put into words why it’s happening, but it is. Up there with the best music. And I include any century and any composer. Music hits you in a deep part of the brain. And guys, you’re right. There really was nothing like Yes. Unique. Thanks for this moment.

When I first heard Awaken, I wondered why I hadn't heard it before. Awakening to this song is like being born again! A reawakening, actually. It became my favorite of theirs, right away! The one that comes next is 'Wondrous Stories'.

There is definitely a pragmatic side to the Yes equation. They were young ambitious men with dreams of success, no doubt. The rest of the story is pretty much innate talent and what form would best express their particular talents.
Jon Anderson once said that he had tried to be a pop star, but he couldn't do it. Check out "City of Angels" for a more pop style Anderson. Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman have stated that they thought Yes would be the perfect vehicle for their style. Chris Squire has said that he doesn't have the comfort of being a solo artist, but works best in a band setting. Check out "Yes Stories" for Yes in their own words.

I was lucky enough to see this live in '77 when I was 14 years old.As good as the recording sounds,it was so much better live.I still remember Chris playing the triple neck bass on this...
You are incredibly lucky. Because of age, my first Yes show was 90125. As great as it was, I would have much rather got to see Wakeman in the 70s. Along with Howe and Squire of course.
I saw this live a few times, once inside the barrier between the crowd and the stage in-the-round. How lucky was that!! Anderson on the harp, Wakeman playing at least keyboards during that epic part of the song, Squire . . . All of them at their peak. Been listening to it since the release on vinyl way back when. Great to see you guys enjoy it.
I was 12 and listening to "bubble gum pop" way back in the early '70's, when my brother introduced me to Yes, ELP, Deep Purple, Manfred Mann and others that changed my whole life. I had never even heard of a a "synthesizer" and immediately fell deeply in love with Wakeman and Emerson, and Jon Lord murdering his keyboards amazed me. I was hooked. Then....someone introduced me to German singers Nina Hagen and Klaus Nomi along with Lene Lovich, my whole world turned upside down. I don't speak German but can sing along in German with Nina. So, on the one hand I've got Jon Anderson singing falsetto and Nina Hagen growling in German. The best of both worlds. They're all still in the rotation on the MP 3 player to this day.
Fact: the keyboard wizard is Rick Wakeman. He has 95 solo albums. Honestly.

And possibly even more amazing, his last album written when he was 71, after 95 previous albums is not only one of his best but will go down as one of the best ever. Period. Unbelievable.

Flashback memories ... I was in college. Six of us dropped acid and piled into a VW van and drove 6 hours to NYC to see YES. Of course we got lost in the city but managed to get there and heard the last set standing outside the stage door. Just listening to them through the cinderblock walls was awesome.

Now you need to find on you tube Jon Anderson doing this live with Todmobile, orchestra and choir at a concert in Iceland, it will blow your socks off. Do it, even if it's just in private. Life changing.

Great reaction my friends - from Songfacts " Keyboard player Rick Wakeman rejoined Yes for the Going For The One album and is a key contributor on this track. He played the church organ that comes in near the end of the song - and he actually played it in a church. The cathedral was about 10 miles away from the studio, so his part was recorded over a telephone line. This would be ghetto production in America or England, where church sounds were typically recorded in the church (see: "The Boxer" by Simon & Garfunkel), but Yes recorded the album at Mountain Studios in Montreux, Switzerland, where the phone lines had spectacular clarity. Instead of using a mobile recording unit, they simply rented a phone line for the day and recorded it"

Hard to believe you can get sound like this over a phone. I can hardly understand people talking on a phone, much less stereophonic sound.

I don't know how the band came up with the name "Yes" but just about every song I listen to from them makes me happy and smile. Even "Gates of Delirium" ends with hope and promise. (You should review that song too.) They seemed to strive toward music that not only was thought provoking, but uplifting.

I put this song as the pinnacle of Yes achievement - it is the ultimate progressive rock anthem and Yes at their ulitmate. I have seen them recreate this live many times and I think the live experience is even more powerful. Jon Anderson has said many that he feels this was the best that Yes achieved.
As teens, me and my bud Alan in Queens, NY, 1977 would often get toasted and listen to this album!!! We also saw them at Madison Square Garden for the GFTO tour. After the show, about half of the audience couldn't get out of their seats, including us, for around 20 minutes. That's how blown away we were.
At age 64, it's so cool to see young dudes get into this stuff. Like Bach, Stravinsky, Art Tatum, etc. great music will never die.

I am just going to say this…..You have a fan for Life because you get YES. YES like other progressive groups or even Rock groups….like The Who….The Beatles…..Led Zeppelin……Steely Dan…….Supertramp…..The Moody Blues…..Deep Purple…….Rush…Pink Floyd……is a High Tier Music group……..who require a High IQ in music to appreciate and really get their music contributions. These guys are the gods of Rock n' Roll…….they specialize in perfecting their sounds and creating music that is not average type of music. People that are really into Jazz or Classical or Opera music have high IQ's in music because it requires one to really listen how an instrument is being played to create certain sounds or how a vocalist is singing a melody to cause an emotional effect. Like Jazz or Classical music one must hear the tones of the way music is being delivered to the ear to understand the meaning or see the story that is being expressed. This is the description of a Hight IQ in music which can understand and appreciate Top Tier Music because it is "Art." You appreciate and get the Art of YES!!!! And you have a fan for Life!!!!

YES sheets all their music!!! Every member contributes to the sound and then they compose all the sounds on sheet music....timing ...rhythms.....solos.......all in one composition. It is "angelic Music" It is a Masterpiece!!!! No other music artist in the history of music have done this what YES does in music!!!

George and Patrick, it's been 4 months. You really need to experience Awaken live.
There are versions of Yes performing it on RUclips, but for me, none of the recorded Yes performances uploaded match the studio version. The Symphonic Live version gets mentioned a lot as a great performance of it, but it has an orchestra instead of Wakeman on keyboards.
Instead, I'm recommending a version by a cover band, Iceland's Todmobile. In 2013, when he was 69 years old, the Yes lead singer you heard here, Jon Anderson, did a full concert as a guest with Todmobile. Awaken is one of the pieces they performed. No other members of Yes appear on this, but trust me. What Todmobile does to make up for that is worthy. For me, there is no better live version of this anywhere else on RUclips, including versions by Yes.

Thank you for your honest and deep reaction to this incredible piece. I first heard this when I was 17 back in 1977. It is a piece that took me to the outer reaches of the universe as well as the depth of my soul. It introduced me to the possibilities of music. It is, in my opinion, one of the most important pieces in prog/classical music, and one of my favorites. It's 44 years later, and it has the same impact on me as it did back when I played this on my record player.
YES is an absolutely amazing band IMO. Not every song is an epic like this one and Close to the Edge, but they have loads of great songs. I would suggest Siberian Khatru, And You and I or Heart of the Sunrise for your next listen.

It’s so great to see young people experiencing this group for the first time so many years after these albums came out. Back in the day, when I was going to Yes concerts in the 70s, they were like spiritual events. We, the audience, had not just come to see the band but to be transported to some other realm. Exactly. You MUST hear the rest of the album. The original guitarist came up with the name Yes because they wanted a short name that could be in big letters on a billboard, and also cause it had a positive vibe to it.

I love, love, LOVE to watch these reaction videos because I grew up with this music. We no longer create music - singing, instrumental mastery, lyrical significance. Today, it's digital mumbo jumbo, and I am so grateful to have grown up during a time when music was still that: MUSIC. My son is in Georgia, right now, and God bless you all - stay strong and pray.

Going for the One was the last truly phenomenal album by Yes imho. Awaken is a masterwork of lush sounds and sonic movement. When I pass from this world this is the song that will be playing…

It seems like YES were on a mission to bring spiritual joy and exuberance into Rock music, a genre that was supposed to be all about chicks, drugs and cool hair!! Rick Wakeman said when he first heard them before he joined, they were doing ALL of the things Rock bands were NOT supposed to do, Lol!! the lead vocals were this sweet soprano tone with angelic harmonies, the guitars and bass sounds were all clean and clear with no bottom end distortion or noisy effects, the bassist was playing lead melodies way up on the fretboard, he said it was absolutely bizarre for an early 70s band to 'Not Belong' like that, Haha!! So glad Rick joined the YES nerd wagon!!

I’ll tell you what. As a lifelong YES fan and having seen them on 6 different tours, they are very surprisingly powerful in concert. Maybe it’s their style that kind of relaxes you with their music. Live? Extremely powerful band. It sounds great of course, but the first time it catches you off guard. Best way to describe it is EPIC! Hellava concert! YES blasting at full power, point blank range, is unforgettable!
You can put them next to any Hard Rock band live. They can more than hold their own.

Going for the One was my introduction to Yes. I can still remember being blown away my the final track, and Awaken remains one of my all time favourites, 40 years later.
The "workings of man" section, the chord sequence is E, A, D, G, C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, B and back to E. That's ALL of the chords ! ( it's going backwards through the circle of fifths.)
I get chills just listening to your comments, obviously when I listen to YES it’s something else, it’s beyond words, it’s a journey. I’m 48 years old, I’ve heard their music from when I was 6.
Sometimes yes transcended musical perfection. This was one of a number of occasions they actually achieved this. I was fortunate enough to see them perform this live on a number of occasions, including inside a V bomber Hanger at RAF Stafford. UK in 1977 during the 'going for the one' tour. Its still spine tingling to this day. So nice to see new people discovering the genius of this in the 21st century.

Good stuff Guys. “Awaken” is certainly a spiritual journey of sorts. The unique thing about Yes was, they were able to “recreate “ everything that you are listening to, live on stage.
An album like “going for the one” was produced in the late 70s. And it’s the quality of music that we should expect in the modern era. But it never happened. Sadly. But at least we were blessed to have masterpieces like yes, rush, Floyd, zeppelin,genesis,ELP,etc....

So cool- some of my favorite reactors, Patrick and George, listening to Yes Awaken. A truly epic piece of music! "Master mortal as me/ where can I be?" Deeply spiritual lyrics from Jon Anderson, incredible composition by Steve Howe, and blow away bass and drums. Patrick really loved one of my favorite parts and that is Rick Wakeman playing the beautiful church organ. So sweet and powerful. George loves it also: "has to be one of the best keyboard players I've ever, ever heard in my life." Damn straight man- Rick Wakeman is the shit. I was able hear this in concert in 1978. This song was the highlight of the show.
One of my favorite bands since the 70's.
My second time of seeing Yes, 1977, Going for the One Tour in Louisville, KY. Awaken is my personal all-time favorite Yessong. Peter Banks, the original guitar player, came up with the name Yes. Rick Wakeman, the keyboard player, is playing a church organ at a church in Vevey, and the other members of the band were in the studio when they recorded Awaken. Very humbling song. Thank you for sharing.
Welcome to the ethereal world of YES. I'm 56 and saw them live in Philly in 79 at 13yo and it was literally a life changing experience. Going For The One is a masterpiece. Listen to Turn of the Century from the same album. It's one of the most beautiful compositions ever recorded.
Progressive Rock started in 1969 with the band King Crimson and the album The Court of the Crimson King. This genre continued throughout the 70’s other bands include Yes, Genesis (with Peter Gabriel), Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Rush, Gentle Giant, Renaissance just to name a few. You REALLY NEED to Listen to EARLY Genesis - the album’s Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Also King Crimson albums the Court of the Crimson King, Larks Tongue in Aspic, Starless and Bible Black and Red. These will give you a good start into this genre. YES are in a league of their own. As far as I am concerned they couldn't be touched or beat.
In 1979 I took this album to an audio store to shop for speakers. The staff and other customers ALL came over to find out what was on the turntable. I think it was Wonderous Stories. This song has made my spine tingle and eyes run for 42 years.
The first time you heard this? I’m 63 discovered it many many years ago. I can pick out every harmonic, have travelled astrally through it and out the other side. There are no answers, it just is a pure experience you walk through life with. It lives in your psyche.

Wow!!! Just wow!! Always been a huge Yes fan since their beginning. I must admit that as a teen- I never heard the details until now as a 60 plus years young. As I say every time---- the 70s were top tier period. No auto tune. No canned music.. That's why the last 15 years I say it's
mostly crap music.

George & Patrick, what is wonderful reaction to Awaken. I have been a YES fan since I heard Yours is no Disgrace after school at a friends house, I have seen them Live more times than I can remember. After hearing YES I really have had a difficult time appreciating any other Band. The album the Ladder has a great songs The Ladder HomeWorld, Magnification is also wonderful. I had the pleasure and luck to meet and get to know Chris Squire through some friends of mine, I was invited to his Flat on Kings Road London for dinner, he played music that he was working on with Steve Hackett. Many back stage moments, he was a humble sweet man. My heart was broken when we lost him in 2015.
I deeply believe that people like you guys will discover YES music for many years to come. They are touring this Summer, Playing CTTE....it’s a very different lineup, but go buy great seats and get a Taste of YES.
