When I turned 18 and became eligible to vote, my dad made it clear to me that that we were poor and that as a poor person he wanted me to vote for the Democratic Party. I was very happy to obey my dad that I hung on his every word 10 years later, I got curious and started to see that the Democrats and their policies and ideas did not align with my beliefs. I changed parties. My dad taught me to never discuss politics or religion but he was always very vocal about his opinions and when he started to do that I would defend my position. By 2016 he was suffering from many medical conditions but he surprised me by mailing in his ballot and casting his vote for President Trump. He sent my mother to the polls and asked her to vote for Trump.. He explained to me that he had been oppressed all his life had done his duty at the poles and cast his vote. Nothing ever changed. My daddy died 2 years later at the age of 77. He told me on his deathbed to never question my beliefs. To never allow outside influences to make me question the decisions I chose to make. He thanked me for helping him see that he had devoted his entire life to a party that didn’t give a damn about him.
