Steve Gorman’s best known as the drummer of The Black Crowes. He also spent time touring with the Welsh band Stereophonics, and was a side man playing on LPs by Warren Zevon, Jack Casady, Ian Thornley & others. Steve is also the author of “Hard to Handle: The Life and Death of the Black Crowes.” The book is very well-written both in terms of the events surrounding the Crowes, and in terms of Steve sharing his own personal experiences, self-reflection and growth.

Steve Gorman was an integral part of the Real Black Crowes. He added so much drumming and spirit wise to those songs. A band is a chemistry! And Chris and Rich should remember that........

Agreed, I gotta go with original members every time! I have personal friends in very successful band from South,Ms. and have watched, lived,& listened to watched the ups/downs of great guys and life’s roller coaster with the original members I think of as family growing up together, school, beginning gigs, band practice on the river, parties, niteclubs, parties, on the Radio, record release party, parties, marriages, divorces, parties, tours, on the bus, meeting other famous artist through them was very special shared time and all the time watching the plane of success take off, spiral out of control, loss, incarceration, and recovery/success and still Love them like brothers because through it all they never forgot where they came from!#Escatawpa#DirtySouthRockn’Roll#🎸❤️🔥
@@anfrankogezamartincic1161 The funny thing to me is Chris Robinson was the most replaceable guy in that band. I'll give Rich props for writing the songs, but any basic blues rock bar band lead singer could have been a phenomenal front man with Eddie, Steve, Marc playing behind them. Especially when so much of their set was covers and long instrumental jams. I just never thought he was that likeable, charismatic or had the vocal chops. When people make the greatest rock and roll front men lists, does anyone mention Chris Robinson? They were phenomenal musicians filling a niche of music that not many acts were filling at that time. Their success had nothing to do with Chris Robinson's vibe or attitude as the face of the band. If anything, it was detriment, imo.

Love Steve and reading his book right now. So cool that he honored Jason & The Scorchers. Loved them starting in 1986 and still love their music today. So fortunate to have seen them in 1987 and 1995.

I've been reading this book. Steve Gorman is an amazing drummer and a very strong dude to stick with that band for so long. They guy who would have driven me nuts the most was Rich.
Rich has always been decent to me, but he's an asshole for ending Magpie the way he did. That was F'ed up. Chris drove me nuts. I think he made Boa unbalanced too. RIP Boa. ☮

I've had the honor of calling Steve friend since he was a 17 year old college student hanging out in my record store in Bowling green, Ky. He's all that and a bag of chips. One of my favorite people on the planet.

I have massive respect for both Steve and the brothers Robinson. All 3 are massive talents and the Crowes are one of the best American bands ever. Their relationship dynamic is between them, personally I wouldn’t let it affect my feelings toward any of them.
i'm from brazil, i must have read 4 or 5 whole books in my life, one was hard to handle and i read it other than my native language as it hasn't been translated into portuguese yet! So I don't have the authority to say that it's the best book I've ever read and etc, but it's wonderful, it gripped me and I couldn't stop reading. The interview here was also excellent, I always liked black crowes and also mr goorman!

One of the Best live bands I have ever seen and I was bummed when they called it a day. Great memories.
I feel your pain brother. Imagine how bummed I was when in 1980 I’m sitting on the beach at the Jersey Shore with my girlfriend (now wife), who got us tickets to see Led Zeppelin in October or November in Philadelphia, and on the radio we hear Bonzo died.

He should've told the "Sting" story. When Ed Harsh passed away a few yrs ago, Steve dedicated a 30min. monologue to him and mentioned a story about being at a Music Festival , backstage near catering. Ed and Steve were hanging out w/ some other people , when from afar they see Sting headed towards the catering tent w/ a big entourage ..... as Sting walks by and doesn't say anything to anyone , Ed says out loud : "Who's that guy think he is , Sting or something ?" Hahah !!!!

Greetings from Arkansas Really ? why didn't Steve help the Brothers Robinson when all the addictions and fighting was taking place ? why just now put it in a book ? Rich is a good man and he was just a baby when the band took off.. and had to deal with things that someone at that age or any age should not have to go threw ... He is still gorgeous as ever..

Ed Harsh was absolutely great. Loved the man. So talented and humble.
@@annaleonardi6299 Chris was young too and Steve himself lead Chris into some pitfalls starting with pot. Steve, Ed, and Chris smoked pot. There's a video of Chris showing how Ed taught him how to roll a joint.
I've read his book maybe three or four times now and it's always great- probably the best rock book you'll ever find. and then you see interviews with him and he's just as good, if not better.

The ‘Black Crowes’ today have gone through a bunch of drummers. None of them have what Steve brought to the band. Old fans hear it. It’s painfully missing.

The Black Crowes were the best live band I've ever seen. I've seen them 7 or 8 times from early on in their career to a tour before they broke up. They just kept getting better. They should be considered rock royalty.
Well they broke that trend with their rerun tours.
The Jimmy Page story is so heartbreaking. For everyone involved. That Live At The Greek album from the Page/Crowes tour was the last BC album I bought. Steve Gorman is always such a pleasure to listen to.
Yah my favorite band of all time until Chris sold out. They rocked in the 90s then he went folk type bs and lost the rock sound. Rich held that band down and he was still kicking a$$ last I saw them in 2014. Won't watch them again even if they tour, sounded like a cheap knock off band.

Great interview. I got to meet the band back in 2013 and Steve was the coolest and seemed to cared about the fans. Chris was a punk.

@Elvis the whole song! Right from the intro, he is driving hard! Nothing fancy, but relentlessly pushing…. I can hear everything, but the drums are above everything else to my ears… it’s like they were mixed 10db above the guitars / vocals.

In the realm of known R&R drummers, I rate him up there w/Bonham, Ginger, and all them dudes w/The Funk Bros, and can Still be a metronome w/Stonesey/Country type honky-tonk shit.
Steve's THE Groove Beast in my world and the way He approaches his cymbals has always enticed me & I'm sure always will! (He's Who I'd choose ta play bass around, bar none!)... but every interview I hear always jus' shows what a really down ta earth Person & overall cool Dude He is. Astounding Jimmy Page story. The brothers deny it of course. From the POV of songwriters though, I don't think artists with integrity will try to use someone else to advance their own art - meaning if it is true they just want to do their own thing. But who knows. I can't imagine saying no to Jimmy Page wanting to help out on a new album. But artists are really self-absorbed with their own work.
Gorman is a great drummer. To me Chris R is one in a million and the reason for the crows success.

I was asked to go to one way back when I was a kid because my mom was an abusive alcoholic it was called Ala-teen I believe or something like that which is obviously more gear towards kids and teenagers. Hope this is what you were asking about.
Still love Chris' voice and Rich's tone and songwriting, they've written some classic tunes. But it was stunning to read this book and then subsequently (a couple of months later) see the Robinson brothers get back together professionally without any other former Black Crowes. You just know thats about one thing only.

I don't think it should matter why they do things their way. You mention that Rich had The Magpie Salute which included members of the Crowes. They weren't a one-off; they toured. I've got no grudge to grind against any of them. Even Steve did some angry interviews that are nothing like today. The point is, we're human and have our own emotions to deal with. Personally, I was pleased that the Robinson Brothers chose to get back together after Neal Casal passed.

Why would it matter if they’re doing it for money? Why would we expect any different? Mozart and Beethoven did it for money. The Rolling Stones are clearly trying to make money while they can.
As a man approaching his 64th year walking this planet, Mr. Gorman is following a path we all take ...it's called life. Some of us do a better job than others by learning from our mistakes along the way. As a fan of the Crowes since Shake Your Money Maker, I'm aware of all the pettiness between the brothers and other nonsense. I recently saw them in ATL with DnC opening and thought the entire show was amazing.
Still, I never understood the reason for any band member's memoir ...just one person's account of a journey the band takes together and it always seems to be an opportunity to cash in by airing out dirty laundry. Anyone saying it was some catharsis is simply deluding themselves. My approach to life is stay in your lane, then again, good luck saying that to someone with codependency issues.

Had nothing but good times at their shows about five of them I think
One time two friends and I walked right by security and went right up to the front of the stage even closer than the first row of seats in a theater in Phoenix Arizona right before the Crowds went on and had the time of my my life drinking Jim Beam we snuck in and dancing with these really pretty girls thru the whole show right in front of Rich and Chris... singing and hollering as loud as we could thinking we would get kicked out for being so obnoxious but we never did and the girls were very nice to all of us
They went backstage after the show Chris seemed really cool watching and talking about Us thru the show
It really lifted my spirits as I was in a bad way from a recent break up and seeing my favorite band in the world up THAT close made my Year

I am glad you are talking about codependency. "Everywhere there is an addict there is codependency." I am glad Steve is talking about narcissism. This is wisdom that comes with experience and age.
Rich Robinson when asked why Gorman wasn't included in reunion said he Gorman was negative and manipulative in the band." Now, when someone is codependent or narcissist the world is colored differently.
This is a great interview. I still love the Crowes. Steve seems like a very enlightened self-aware person. He has the mind of a writer haha.

The Robinsons are dicks. Gorman at The Greek was the best thing that band ever did.
Steve wasn't included because Chris and Rich would have had to split their money with him. Rich says Steve was negative and manipulative in the band nowadays but the last thing we heard from him was how Chris killed the Crowes because he wanted all of his and Steve's money.
This tour they literally put a vanity mirror on stage so that Chris could watch himself perform 😂
I love the black crowes and I think Chris is one of the great rock performers of all time and one of my favorite rock stars
But dang man that says a lot about who he is 😂

Rough overview, ZZTop (Lite beer sucks), Crowes touring with Jimmy Page with backstory of 5 albums in 90s sold less and less, need to revitalize band, decide to tour with JP, tour is only 11 dates instead of 55, quits the band early 2000s for a few years, gets info from JP a year later, how he met Chris and got offered the job in 1987, talked about being youngest of 8 children, talked about developing issues in band starting in 1996, talk about 2nd act 2005-2013 - he wasn't looking to fix the band...attended Anon meeting, problems with the brothers in 2008-2010, Chris was always looking for a fight...More pointed personal questions then were asked last 30 minutes... like Biggest change : focus what you're good at and let other stuff drift aside
Life tidbits: Not honest with yourself you can't be honest with other people, I've learned nothing from success - every lesson from failure. Codependency and addiction talk, doing right things for the wrong reasons, family can be strength and support, Margaret Thatcher : you have to learn from others mistakes, you can't make them all yourself, if you don't admit you should be doing better that festers, you gotta practice self care, you can confuse familiarity with comfort...you choose a darker road because you're familiar with it. Simple: take care of yourself, and be honest and accountable to yourself, what is your subconscious anticipating that you haven't acknowledged yet? You make choices everyday of what energies you'll be fueled by? You take away a wall, people don't know what to push.

I’ve seen the Crowes play live 3 times. Once with Oasis. They totally rocked every time. Like Oasis, The Sex Pistols, Gun’s N’ Roses, etc. the danger that they might implode at any moment is part of what made them rock so hard in the first place. PS Nothing against Jimmy Page but it wasn’t his band. Rich Robinson is a great guitar player in his own right and maybe he just got tired of a legend like JP overshadowing him in his own band every single night. Great video!

I've been wanting to say this since I read the book. The one thing the two brothers had was song writing. They were not successful in any other area in their relationship together. I understand why Rich would have wanted to keep the song writing between the two of them. It is all perspective.
