    First off I’m a long time hockey guy well passed my prime years with that said I still enjoy getting out on the ice with the guys once or twice a week shoot the puck around coming off the ice pounding down a few cold ones any believing that we’re still 20 years old with that said I came across your channel and I love it it’s informative it’s well put together the information that I’ve gotten regarding new equipment from sticks to skates to gloves it’s amazing how the game changed and it’s a real treat to have your channel available to bring us old guys up to speed on what you young bucks are up skating on , shooting with, etc. so keep on Playing and then keep on giving us old timers the updates on the new gear thank you

    Interesting. I just started looking in to this. I just started skating a year ago, and play goalie. I have no issues on goalie skates, but when I use the Tacks I bought to play out, it's like I have a wheel out of balance. At higher speeds my skates just start wobbling and drifting. Someone mentioned profiling, and this video helped to make sense of it. I wear a size 12 skate, and I am told that for people with larger skates, profiling is a must.

    Its been over 20 years since playing Hockey. Just went down to guildford and definitely realised about all of these factors. Grinding/homing in my edges my self to suit my me with the right bite on each edge. This was the next thing that came to my mind was profiling. Wiped out pretty hard but its part of it.
    How does a person that is thinking to get back in to it try these different profiles without braking the bank. Be great if Pro sharp did a tour of the UK for people to see the benefits of not just having one profile but a couple to several.
    Great Video! Exactly the info looking for.

    Re "OPTION 5 comments below" At 3:58 I believe Chris meant the "Option Quad 0.5" profile template by Prosharp, ie when he says "Option 5".
    At 4:03 "quad 0.5" has the four radii in the chart of 8, 10, 12, and 14 ft. The 8ft radius is the Red front toe region.
    The Blue trays of skate runners at 0:02 to 0:13 show runners binned by Length/ Profile/Radius of hollow etc.
    Thus at 0:02 the 280 9ft 13 is 280mm runner, 9ft ft side profile, 13mm radius of hollow ( about 1/2 inch ROH)
    one also sees a 272 Q2 20 which is a 272 length runner, a Quad 2 four radius profile, a rather large 20mm ROH.
    At 0:11 one sees a 288 D1 20 which is a 288 mm runner, Detroit 1 profile, 20mm ROH.
    Also a 288 Q2 30Z a 288 runner, Quad 2 four radius profile, and a Z channel,, maybe with a 30mm ROH. Z channel has the center of the blade a deeper groove.
    Thus I wager Chris used a "Quad 0.5" Prosharp profile our radii in the chart of 8, 10, 12, and 14 ft. The 8ft radius is the Red front toe region. This is a profile from the template of a AS 2001 Prosharp skate sharpener
    With a Quad profiled blade one can use a larger radius of hollow since blade is more optimized.

    Been skating on recently ordered quad profiled runners with an FBV 95/1 edge. It took about 2 hours on open ice to get the feel. I thought just for grins to swap back to the former stock blades on the Bauer LS2 supreme runners - that was a mistake- " felt like 2x4's". BE AWARE there is an adjustment time before you jump on the ice and go to hit the brakes or do tight dime turns. So far I can recognize increased skate agility, explosiveness and handling but need more practice to adjust muscle memory after 28 years of skating on stock profiles.

    • @seanb6691
      @seanb6691 5 лет назад

      Black blades because of the coating tend to not even need a honing but if you want to, dont use a ceramic or stone hone, use a leather hone. Hyperglide blades are the same, they need a certain honer to maintain the slippery shine on them

    Hey, i have been using a pair of ice blades on my inline skate for a couple of months now. And today i just tried my friend's bauer hockey skates and the blades feel really great. It was easy to turn, sprint, stop and so on.
    My question is would my inline skate ice blades feel just as good as my friend's hockey skates if i got them profiled?
    I actually like my inline skate boots better because of the super comfortable liner even though they are really on the heavier side.

    Gretzky used a really short profile radius (7") for maneuverability and average to deep Radius of Hollow (1/2' to 3/8') for grip on the ice. Interestingly, his teammate and famously smooth-skating defenseman Paul Coffee used a very shallow radius of hollow for glide (1' to 1.5')

    I have a question a bit off topic. When hockey skaters start ice skating, do you start learning on figure skates or straight to hockey stakets? I wanna do freestyle skating at the end but ice skating school only teaches figure skating and coach adviced me better not to use hockey skates because there are some movements in the intermediate level difficult to be done on hockey skates. I prefer tight turns and speed to spinning. So should I change skates to hockey skates? Thanks.

      search 'prosharp profiling issuu.com' at google for prosharps datasheet. in my opinion the best is start with highest -'flat' radius profiles like Zuperior or Quad n go to more curved shapes of radius. profiles r individual matter so u need to check some on ur own. with them u can change: stance, speed/maneuverability factor (glide/grip), the rocker position, optimal ROH n much more. after 20h on Quads i took my secondary runners (brand profile 9', sharpened regural on ice rink n i almost killed myself, even id found them nice before.

    I got my skates profiled to a Quad One and had to shallow my hollow from 3/4” to 1” and I hate it. It honestly still feels like I’m working harder even though I reduced the hollow depth. Since I’m already on the path of trying different profiles I’ll try a Quad zero and see if that helps, but after that I’m not trying anything more.
    My opinion is if you feel good on your skates already don’t change it. The only thing I’d change is trying to use a shallower hollow if you can. I was able to use a 3/4” hollow on a retail radius and I slowly worked my way shallower throughout the years. I’ve never had any problem with stability or turning anyway, now it just feels like I’m glued to the ice.

      Did you like quad 0?

    • @philipmcauley
      @philipmcauley 2 года назад

      @@gabrielfilion4787 I don’t care for a profile man, but that’s not to say you won’t. I’m 30 years old and have skated with a 9’ radius my whole life, so maybe change was just too hard for me. For any profile you do choose I do recommend trying to go more shallow on your hollow throughout the years though. I skate on a 1” hollow consistently now and feel it helps significantly with energy consumption and glide.

    I’m 5’9 190 lbs.. I’ve been using a 1/2 for as long as I can remember. I have tired 3/8 & 5/8 but just didn’t like them as much as a 1/2.. which gives you the best of both worlds- grip + speed. I play on average 2 hours per week. I’m just confused as to what Profiling I should get for my steel… I’ve never had them profiled before in my 23+ years of playing hockey. I am one of the quicker guys in the ice and I have a great 1st/2nd powerful stride that helps me beat others in tight spots. I feel as if I’m a more athletic forward leaning skater than most. .. soo maybe a forward tilt profile ??? I’m unsure , I don’t want it to be too drastic to where it messes up my stride but also am curious to see if this would help make me a better more complete skater.?
    FYI- I grew up playing street/roller hockey my entire life. 2-3x as much as ice just because of the accessibility and cost growing up. So not sure if me being a roller guy changes my stride and I should get a certain profile based on that.

    • @emes3211
      @emes3211 7 лет назад

      depends on how much steel u hav atm. some profiles kind of flat ones, like quad; zuperior (triple radius: 6-13-26'), need more steel. bcuz of their higher radius. brand new runners r about 9-10' of radius. for example bauers Super StainlessSteel runners r soft n hav the less steel, LS2s are similar but a lil harder, LS3s hav more steel, LS4 same amount of steel as LS3 but theyr r made of the hardest material. So the best way to check different types of profiles, more combined like 3 or 4 - radius ones is to buy LS3 n profile em, then channel Z n sharpen. brand new LS3 let u change profile few times, depends on exact profiles u wanna try. the most economical is start with highest radius like Zuperior n go to lower radius to save steel. remember to pick up right ROH for new profile. those two parameters r connected, general rule is when u get more ice contact from profile u shud go higher with ROH (e.g. from 1/2" to 5/8") to get same glide/grip. search at google 'prosharp profiling issuu.com' for prosharps datasheet - very usefull. i hav SSS on Combo 10-13 profile n LS3 on Quad 1 6-9-12-15. i rly liked Quad which gives u forward position, a lot of contact with ice n high heel feeling - heel breaks just like this;)

    When you get your skates sharpened, what is the most generic or most popular radius hollow to get ?

    • @emes3211
      @emes3211 7 лет назад +1

      brand radius depends on lenght of the runner. shorter bauers like 263mm has 9', longer 10' of radius. ROH is conected with profile then with hight, weight, skills. u shud sharpen ur skates when u feel u hav no grip, legs go in their own way. crosby sharpenes his skates every game period (3 times a game). the harder steel n the deeper hllow the flatter profile u hav the longer they keeps the cut. but if askin after 30h of skating u can blindly get em sharpened;) the most popular ROH is 1/2" its kind of good for every1, but not the best for most ppl ;)

    • @daddydubz88
      @daddydubz88 2 года назад

      Yes. However, you'll want to be shallower than you normally you would go. So if you normally use a 1/2" hollow bump down to a 5/8", 11/16", or 3/4". Just know after so many sharpenings your profile will be lost usually around 10-15. Some places offer profile refreshes for half the cost of the original profile as well to compensate.

    I juat got new step steel and was using grafs for nearly 17 years before moving to the AS3pro line.. the stock strp steel profile is fucked. They feel like they have too much toe and heel.. it was messing up my turns..and my balance.. i felt like a total noob haha. It says they are a 10ft radius but they look like they are 13ft..
    I think my grafs were closer to 9ft

    Is there a place where can I try out the different profiles in Europe back-to-back like you did? You see I wouldn't want to buy 5 different runners for Eur 350 and then throw away 4 of them after the tryout... PLS HELP:)

      You can mail them out. You need to find someone that has a prosharp machine to get the quad profile. I would suggest getting the 0.5 quad profile and remember to make it less sharp also ie I went from 5/8 sharpen to a 3/4. You can go wrong with the 0.5 quad. Trust me.

    So I’m about 5’11” and most of my adult life I’ve been about 180 pounds. I’ve always used a 1/2 and was able to skate, turn and stop without even thinking about it. Over the last 4-5 years I’ve gradually put on weight and now sit at about 230. Over this time I’ve noticed my skating ability going to absolute dog s***!
    I initially figured it was maybe because I’m out of shape but I don’t think that’s it. I’m constantly having to think about my skating now and I’m falling several times a game, whereas I would almost never fall when I was at 180ish pounds. If it was just a case of being out of shape I’d just get tired faster not have trouble turning. I get major chattering when turning and stopping especially in the corners. I’ve been skating since I was 5 and I’m 34 now so I have a hard time believing that I just lost my skating ability. Any suggestions?

      @@efslgima but the thing is I’ve been skating and playing hockey my whole life and skating felt as easy as walking for me (not literally). Like never needed to even think about it. It’s the weirdest thing. I’m trying out different hollows so I’ll keep you guys updated. Thanks for the reply.

      @@HT-sm9dm was it the hollow? i used to use 7/16 everytime. Now i want something in between 1/2 and 7/16. I might try 15/32 since that the perfect middle.

    I want to try profiling my s140s but I don't think I can do that because s140s don't don't put out like other skates :(

    • @emes3211
      @emes3211 7 лет назад +1

      thats shudnt be a problem. u can put whole skate on profiling machine n the other case is that skates without removable runners hav more steel than higher models (140s vs 160 hav more steel). remember that u cut a lot of steel doing profile. so when blade goes to end u need to buy a new pair of skates or change the whole holder at proshop.

    It is an interesting video, but I think way to much emphasis is placed on equipment. People tend to think it is a shortcut to better performance, when in fact training is the main way you become a better skater. If you get into any hobby you can end up at the obsessive end of equipment differences, searching for the Holy Grail. All hobbies have this aspect and we get sucked into it.
    I have a pair of Reebok 5K. I have no idea what the contact area is of my blades and how hollow they are ground when they are sharpened. I take them the a random sharpener with no instructions except "sharpen these". I get them back I they are fine. In fact I just noticed that both of my blades are loose - but even this did not make any difference to my skating today.
    I skate 3 hours a day just about every day. I can spin effortlessly of one foot (L and R) both backwards and forwards, I do forwards and backwards cross-overs without thinking, I can do all of the figure skating steps and can jump the figure skating salcouw left and right and can also do the single axle jump (1.5 turns - yes in hockeys - right only). I really do not think about my skates too much, I concentrate fully on my technique, and it works. The reason one gets these obsessions is because of the market.
    I sometimes do a water fast - i.e. not eating and only drinking water for 10 days. It works great for me - but you hardly ever hear of people (even doctors) talking about water fasts. The reason is that there is no money to be made from it. Where there is money to be made you will get this obsessiveness creeping in.
    I'm not saying its bullshit by any means, but one should not make this the main focus.

      Sean Karl though you certainly have a point that too much emphasis is placed on the gear with hobby people, you will never find a seriously competitive player like a pro or jr guy not know exactly what hollow and profile they want. Speaking from experience they do in fact make a major difference, as seen by the pro guys

    so do you have to sharpen them after they’re profiled?

    • @HockeyTutorialOfficial

      Yes, after profiling you sharpen as normal. The profile will last for around 4-5 months depending on how often you sharpen.

    Hockey Tutorial@ I see a lot of unanswered questions coming from newbies and hockey practitioners. And not just under this video. If you are here to help others please do so. If you can't unswer them all because you don't know it's not the end of the world but you have to say something, otherwise it looks like disrespectfulness from your part.
