To the beginning point of your video:
When I was a young boy taking my first steps out of Christianity and into paganism it was hard to shake the notion that I must hurry to various milestones in my life in order to get into the afterlife.
Now I'm in my 20s and after experiencing many things while studying the gods and godesses and the nature therein I have discovered that perhaps the gods care less for mortals than we may think.
That's not to say they DONT guide us and show us certain visions on our journeys but they are more like stewards of the nature of mankind, the forces that bind us to nature, and nature itself.
I'm more at peace with myself and what I do as a result. There is less urgency to constantly call upon the gods unlike a Christian praying to theirs for neverending favors and signs and advice. Never been much of a praying man anyhow.

The abrahamic religions place man above nature. That is why they helped turn the middle east into desert. From what I can tell, a good pagan only seeks to be nature's equal, and I do not miss the baptist church of my childhood.

this was very well explained, thank you. I have worked for many years now with the Norse deities and there is absolutely a massive difference between the Vanir and the Aesir. The Vanir is very grounded and connected to the earth mysteries, and are not so possessive as the Aesir. The Aesir can become very intense and possessive and has a very chaotic energy. I find their energy can be be very overwhelming and intense to a point of spiritual exhaustion. So this is really to confirm what you have just said in your video. Thank you for making these videos and educating the neo-/pagan communities and for lifting the veil of fantasy for their eyes.

Thanks so much for this! I never realized until now how morbid and depressing the "Big 3" religions are... They spend their entire lives basically waiting to die and hoping that they apologized and sufficiently "bent the knee" enough to please their controlling Gods.
That´s exactly why i can´t stand them either, they´re all about control and impossible standards, thereby making people feel inadequate and guilty for just about everything.
I lived in Sweden and couldnt understand the Norse Gods books. And the english translations were just as hard work. Until i bumped into your video's. Being English, at school we were strict Judeo Christians. Our country is a reflection its own delusions about humanity and self sustainability as an Island peoples. The British Establishment is the biggest lie in the world. But then, i respect this is not a political forum. But definitely a forum that has improved my own personal awareness in my world.

Dear Arith.Thank you for for not only this but all of your videos and your willingness to share you knowledge and insights. I am very new to this world view and at times overwhelmed by the choice of where to look. But I am more comfortable with the high places and hills and that is where my spirit tends to settle so I take my lead from that. We are all trying to find a spiritual connection, or at leat any sort of connection that makes us feel whole. It's not easy, especially in this age that has been draining out our energy and almost turned us into listless phantoms. I believe the more contact we have with nature, the closer we get to achieve something that makes us feel whole, or at the very least doesn't make us feel as empty as we have felt in this highly industrialized era of pure materialism. I wish you good luck and may the life-giving powers continue to flow :)

This is great! My only question is that you assert that Vanir do not represent war, yet Freyja is seen as a war goddess who gets first pick of the battle slain. Is this an attribute that was placed on her later, in the iron age coinciding with the cult of Odin?
She is only really a battle goddess because of the death involved in war. She gained half of the slain in battle as part of a trade between her and Odin (she taught him Seidr). She takes her choice (she gets first choice) and she takes them to her hall, which is one of peace and rest. The other half, Odins half, go to his hall where they train further for the final battle of Ragnarok. So even in her aspect of war, she represents a very peaceful, Vanic energy. Her connection with War is very passive and one of a deeper understanding. She is a Life and Death goddess, a fertility goddess, one of cycles. Death is part of war, so she is there - it is the humans psychological fear of death that put so much importance on attaching her to war and battle, as she was believed to be there for them at the end (as in if they died), resulting in her being one of the main deities of warriors.

the definition of a seer reminded me of shaman /healer / knower in trance.. btw liuta in finnish means "a lot", or "a stream of (something)" like: liuta kysymyksiä = a stream of questions (/many questions).
one thing also on this mythology subject, i've noticed that we have two names in Finland, Reijo (male) and Reija (female).. we don't rly use the letter f, so they might be related to Freyr and Freya..
and btw. we use 'vaan' in everyday speach.,
example: person1: -should i make coffee? person2: -do it vaan, i could drink a cup.

my only knowledge of vanir and aesir comes from bock saga, and it kinda says that in one point there were a few aser people and the rest of the World humans were vaan people.. Thor/Tor/Tuur on the other hand remains a bit misty of what was the actual purpose of it.. nowadays Tuuri means luck here, but we've gone through more than 500 yrs of forced christian learning, and manipulation of our mother tongue..
maybe one day all mythology comes back to full circle., as a circle of peace once again..

This is a very soothing concept for me since it is the one I have felt for most of my life. The three main religions absolutely terrify me for all of the reasons you talk about. I realize more and more that I have been a pagan all of my life. I developed this philosophy so early in life I don't even remember when it happened. It has given me strength and purpose. I know none of the gods and goddesses, just a deep center of the philosophy and beliefs.

A beautiful video Arith, so nice of you to cover this. So many people just seem to get all messed up by the various messages(some subconscious) that most religions teach these days. I suppose the Christians could blame the Coptic religion for a lot of their problems but the attitudes that this was just a preparation for "the real thing" was and is widespread. It's strange the way most people regard "primitives" - they feel we should be treated as children, too stupid to understand the great plan that God has for us in heaven. :P

i still remains at the oppinion thst the Vanir is a reminece of the first agricultural cultures of the fertile cresent (natufians) and the Aesirs are a reminece of the proto-indoeuropean nomadic steppe culture (yamnaya)

You make a lot a sense and I really do not understand why people would be upset with the part about Odin. He was the wandering one eyed shaman of tales seeking knowledge, it wouldn't make sense for him to be held up like a Jesus like figure by agricultural communities. In the modern though I can see why Odin would be more of a focus of new pagans as many of our journeys begin with a hunger for knowledge and wisdom so it makes sense that in our day Odin would be central figure, as not many of us are cultivators of sorts. Though we should look to all the gods for their different aspects last thing we need is to emulate monotheism.

Hi Arith, thanks for this video... Very informative... Just had some questions, in your list of Vanir divinities you haven't included Nerthus, was wondering why she isn't mentioned here as she is often perceived as the feminine counterpart to Njörðr similar to Freya/Freyr... Also Freya is often described as the Goddess of love and war, her iconography also points towards that since she will often be holding a sword or a spear, Freyr as well is often depicted holding a sword, in India when our Gods are depicted holding certain objects it always comments on their nature and spheres of activity, like for instance, Durga will hold weapons to conquer the demons that ultimately represent ego, and various other forms of Adharma (unrighteousness...) So that makes me consider whether, since they are deities that represent Nature, Peace etc then maybe their weapons are what they use to defend that phenomena of peace/plenty provided by nature? Thx again...

The first time I evoked Freyja, she asked me to meditate on her essence in the reflection of my own eyes every day for a week.
From a perspective informed by medieval Kaśmīri Śaiva Tantra, creation is reality's inhalation and dissolution is reality's exhalation; differentiated polarities exist in relation to and facilitate each other. The space between and the life-force pervading such polarized/differentiated elements acts as a gateway to a layer of reality that is innate-within-but-unlimited by spatio-temporal manifestation, and which is characterized by unlimited consciousness, energy, and bliss.
Dot in circle. Bindu in prana. Matter in energy. The function follows the form; the form follows the function.
The circle and the line are both existent. The wave and the particle. Spirit, flow. Flesh, form.
The Book doesn't say what the fractured religions believe in. Hebrew and Greek are fascinating. I wouldn't have been able to learn them without learning Futhark, building a phonetic bridge. Then Greek. Paleo-Hebrew. And finally Modern Hebrew within the past few months.
Paleo-Hebrew is literally Runic. Each symbol carrying a meaning.

I am just now starting on your 2020 videos, one year later in 2021. It's weird to watch them, knowing that Covid is coming up. lol
I think the take on Odin is a bit unfair - whilst he may of been a conniving bugger he also committed self sacrifice to give the runes and thereby the written language to humanity, akin to Prometheus with fire. His single-minded pursuit of wisdom serves as an example to uplift and edify humanity. His collection of warriors was to build an army to battle the brute forces of chaos come ragnorok, and again serves as inspiration for humanity, as well as the metaphysical pursuit itself to further aid cosmological teleology. All hail Odin 🙏🏻 ⚔️

Not from an academic standpoint per say, but i made an interview (in swedish and norwegian) with Ivar Hafskjold (traditionbearer of STAV. I should say that i have an norse spiritual podcast) and there we talked about that instead of perhaps having a direct contact with the gods all the time, one had more contact with the local spirits (Rådare, Vättar, Tomten e.tc)
And even though the gods were present as such, the day to day connection was with these.
Good video, lastly i think in some cases people tend to dissect things more than needed. It is convinient to place stuff in categories, even though life isn't so easy.

somewhere there exist some hypothesis about the Vanir meaning to be pre-Indoeuropean deities on the areas where the Germanic and Nordic people latter settled, and so got integrated in their religion beliefs though as secondary deities compared with the Aesir and the other deities which were more properly coming from the common Indoeuropean background religious spirituality ideas.

i almost feel like the reason that the vanir seem to be so scarcely attested is perhaps that the mound cult through which one could become a landvaettir might be tied to them and therefore the Alfar would be the other vanir, former humans who became land spirits as well as the spirits of nature that always were land spirits

Snorri isnt saying Valhall was considered like Christian heaven by the norse. Its Snorri himself who connects Valhall to Heaven, because Snorri himself is a Christian and interpreting poems he has gathered, and is trying to present it in a Christian context.
Most of the scandinavians was farmers at that time. So go to Vallhall (maybe when they see a järtecken (Omen)) was for they who went viking (vik = bay). Men across the world wouldnt say no to riches and women, at that time.

Don't know what u know about the Orthodox Church but in their Church teaching, it is the goal of every believer to be partakers of the divine nature of Christ through the lifelong process of Deification. Deification is more than just living a life that is good enough to go to heaven. Scripture is clear that outward religious acts or charitable works have no merit before God and will never make the believer worthy of heaven. Deification is a transformation of the inner man through faith. It is becoming like Christ himself. It is a complete renewal of the fallen man. It is a new life. The believer can produce many religious acts and many good deeds, but without the inner transformation and partaking of the divine nature of God, one cannot enter the Kindom of God. So it is not about living a life a certain way, it is about the inner transformation, putting on or partaking of the divine nature of God.

Indeed, this video was the very first of 2020 in this channel, but I've recorded it in late October 2019, and I had a feeling we would all need to have hope and embrace the beauty of life as soon as the new year would come, which is why I've made this video and said these words. I wasn't far from the truth, it seems. Must trust my instincts a lot more.
Thanks for the really good video. The Norse view of death and the afterlife corresponds to the ancient Egyptian. To them , death was also a gateway to a new phase of existence, and the afterlife was not feared. Death was anticipated for their while lives through, as the spirit and soul of a person was believed to be immortal. When one dies, the soul accompanied by the shadow or higher self is led before the scales of truth in the great Hall of Double Truth and Right, to be judged by the Old Gods. The heart (or seat of the soul) is weighed against the feather of Maat on the scale to determine it's relative heaviness. If one lived by the Ideals of Maat, one passed into the Summerlands or Sekhet-Aaru where you wore the same clothes, drank the same drink and partook of the same food as the Neterui, or gods and goddesses of Nature for a time, before being reborn again. If one was a bad person, one went to the Netherworld and stayed there for a while under the tutelage of the Underworld deities. These individuals have to learn lessons before being born again to begin another incarnation. So as a Pagan, wherever you are from, it makes sense to live a life worth living, so as to set a healthy precedent for those lives to come.X
Of course the Ideals of Maat are the oldest known set of ethical - not "moral" - guidelines for creating a great lifetime :)
I know it's not the exact same, but I see that that Icelandic sagas and the Eddas are to the true Nordic faith what Shakespeare''s Scottish Play is to the real titular character and the real history. As you said, it comes down to them having to sell to a wealthy audience in Shakespeare's case, and for what remains from actual Nordic descendants though it's 200 years later, what they did was they had to re-write things to take the wealthy elites/ruling class/monarch's deities look more favourable and the others perhaps less favourably in a comedic but still kind way some cases and maybe very changed to the point of being misogynistic or complete falsehoods in others.

Frigg is the same as Hlodyn and Jordr! She is also mother of Thor and Baldr and she is the twin sister of Njordr with whom we know she had Freyja-Mardoll and Freyr-Ingunar!! Freyja in turn married to Odr (Just as the gift of Honir is called, We see how a fertility goddes is married to a god of ecstasy) also called Svipdagr, Ottar, Skirnir, SO we see how Thorr married Sif (also alfar, a swanmaiden) a goddes of vegetation marries a god of Storms and RAIN and again how Baldr married Nanna-Singhunt (also Alfar, The moon-dis) there we see how a light god (Baldr) married a night fighting goddes (Moon-dis) Freyr on the other hand married a jotun Gerdr (Daugther of Gymir-Gotar-Aegir and daugther of Angrboda-Gullveig-Heidr wich starter Vanir-Aesir war that is another story) We see an interresting theme of HOLY marriages WHERE the Gods try to hold peace and balance!
