  • Community organizer and former Halifax poet laureate El Jones reads a poem in honour of Fliss Cramman, but also for all people suffering detention, incarceration and possible deportation.
Fliss Cramman is desperately ill, hospitalized, and has been shackled to her bed in Dartmouth General hospital for some time. After public pressure and media exposure, the shackles were only taken off Fliss today.
Fliss had been imprisoned for offering to sell drugs. After she served her time in jail, it was discovered she is not a Canadian citizen - she was taken into care at age 11 after coming to Canada at age 8 and suffering sexual assault in her family. She believed that she had citizenship.
Now they are trying to deport her despite her being a one time, non-violent offender who had been victimized her whole life, failed by the system, and who has already fully served her time.
While they are conducting immigration hearings in an effort to deport Fliss, she was chained to her bed in hospital.
Tonight’s rally was to support Fliss and to continue to draw attention to the many issues in this case and in others. We must draw attention to the conditions of detainees. We must draw attention to the policies around using shackles, including on pregnant women. We must advocate against the increasing use of incarceration for women instead of treatment and healing. We can raise our voices about this deportation.
This type of treatment should be an outage to everyone. We are calling on the federal government to intervene in this case and end the torture of this woman, by dropping efforts to deport Fliss from the only country she has known since her early childhood, and to cease using tactics like shackling a woman to her hotel bed.
