- A beautiful Christmas song :-)
Written by Elaine Hagenberg, one of my favourite Christian choral composers.
“...who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto me?” (Jeremiah 30:21)
There are two verbs in this phrase: (1) Engaged; and (2) Approach. There are four types of people:
(1) Those who have neither engaged their hearts nor approached God. They are completely oblivious to the things of God. They have no interest in even coming close to God.
(2) Those who engage their hearts but do not approach God. They have a care for religious and spiritual things, but a wrong view of God. There are many of such professing Christians who claim to delight in God but do not come to church.
(3) The unengaged people who approach God. How oft people come without due spiritual preparation, waltzing in as they wish without realising they are coming before the King of kings and Lord of Lords. The make a shew of religion outwardly, yet their hearts are cold. They draw near with their lips, but not their hearts. “They think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.” (Matt 6:7) but find no power and answer in prayer.
(4) Those who approach God with engaged hearts. They come willingly and delighting in God Himself. The word “engaged” means to take on a pledge, be a surety etc. It was used of Judah being a pledge for Benjamin (Gen 43:9). Such people have pledged their hearts to God.
“To Thee My Heart I Offer” paints the picture of this fourth group of people that we should all aspire to be. May we be people that are willing to pledge our hearts to God - My heart, my soul, and all I own - let these be Thine alone.
