    Not bad at all, A-TRAC seems to be a good system. It works well across many platforms.
    Despite the aging platform, I still see new Sequoias everywhere. Must be that reliability, solid platform and space.

      It has been a good system from the start. Once Toyota updated to more wheel speed sensors and faster computers in the early 2000's it became a great system. A-TRAC is the base that crawl control was built off of, which is why you hear the ABS pump running when crawl control is used. Overall I wasn't expecting the Sequoia TRD Pro to perform as well as it did. Thanks for commenting!

      All the above you mention. A new jvc 10.5" head unit, and new morimoto xb amber drl headlights just brought our 08 platinum into another decade. These Sequoia's are on another level. 2020 TRD grill coming soon!

      @@EngineAdventures Why would the ABS pump be running for A-TRAC? Also I'm actually astounded that Toyota could develop such a good system. This thing has a torsen center diff, it's just so sad that people think the Tundra is better.

      @@imnotusingmyrealname4566 All brake based limited slip systems (that I know of) use the ABS pump to direct brake pressure to the wheels that are spinning. The system uses the same wheel speed sensors that the ABS uses. The whole reason brake based limited slip exists is because manufacturers are able to tie it into the existing ABS system and not require much effort to implement, except for some coding and a stronger more reliable/durable ABS pump.

      2012 Sequoia Platinum - 229,000km pulling a 31’ Outdoors RV 26KVS using PROPRIDE hitch. I run Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season, 255/55/20 load range XL, speed rating 110W. They are excellent and dissipate heat.
      Just finished a trip through the Saskatchewan prairie into Alberta mountains in Banff. About 2000km put on Sequoia averaging 11mpg towing. That 4.30 rear end is just awesome for towing. Transmission temp gauge never moved and it was like 30 Celsius here.
      The sequoia is bullet proof. I am hoping to buy a new 2021/2022 for the last of the V8 before they introduce the new sequoia late next year with the turbo V6.
      I just watched your Escalade video and laughed at the code for the suspension. People don’t get it that all that goofy technology will fail. Period.
      I bought my sequoia new and it has been absolutely bullet proof. Fancy, no. Thirsty, depends on how you drive it. Long term reliability, hell yes.
      These vehicles are so expensive today that if you want 7-10 yrs from them I prefer reliability.
      Anyway, great videos. I thought I would give you some information.

      Thanks for the update and support! We almost bought a Sequoia as our family vehicle, but my wife preferred the size and driveability of the Pilot over the Sequoia. I'm looking forward to the new one, and hopefully they can keep it simple and reliable!

    I had no idea the rear was independent! I thought it had a solid rear axle. Thanks for the info.

      The first generation Sequoias had a solid rear axle and independent front. For the 2nd generation, since 2008, they switched to fully independent front and rear suspension. Thanks for watching!

      Factory independent suspension has less travel, but it's smoother for high speed off-road when setup right. Many desert racers use a solid rear axle and independent front.

    Love the fact thY this has a center diff instead of a chain drive. Makes it alot easier if you have to make a tight turn but still need better traction than 2wd.

      There have been many times I wish I could have had low range gearing with an open center diff, usually wen backing a trailer uphill, this solves that problem.

      @@EngineAdventures its great to have, especially if you have to make a really tight turn. No binding, just unlock it. Wish jeeps had center diffs like Land Rovers and Land Cruisers do.

      @@EngineAdventures Ironically the top end on-road 4Runner is the only 4Runner to have that AWD system too. I bet it loses that in the next generation. Toyota is cost cutting like crazy, didn't offer a lockable center diff in the Tundra, not even the clutch based systems (which I think are awful but still better than 2WD) that the Americans use. The new Sequoia also lost that and I'm sure they would cut that feature from their 4-cylinder 4Runner. Now the 4 stands for the cylinder count! They would want people to shell out extra money for the new GX that will get the detuned V6. Toyota has become so pathetic with powertrains.

    My problem with it isn't the gauge cluster but the dashboard.

      It's such a massive vehicle, and not very driver centric. The new one is better (I briefly sat in one at SEMA this year) but still not as good as it could be. I do like the proportions of the 3rd gen Sequoia. It's more first gen than second gen in size.

    You won’t find another vehicle this large with a tighter turning radius. I think it will out turn my old Jeep Wrangler unlimited.

      True, the Sequoia has a very tight turning radius. That makes it driver like a much smaller vehicle in tight spaces.

      Thanks for the support!! That's a difficult question as it really depends on where you live and what type of offroading you do. The Land Cruiser is probably my first choice but the cost is significantly higher than the others. From there I'd either go Tundra or Sequoia, I occasionally need to tow and these two will handle my needs. The extra space is great for my family of 4 and a dog. I also preferred the 4 Runner over the Tacoma, the 4 Runner was a bit smoother for high speed offroad.

      @@stoicageorgeciprian oh dang, I misread your message thinking you said which Toyota offroader do I like the best. It still totally depends on each person's situation. The Raptor is the king of high speed offroad (for now, I'm getting a TRX in February), for rock crawling/slow speed, the Wrangler Rubicon. Toyotas are an overlanding type vehicle in my opinion with great reliability and kind of a jack of all trades vehicle but not peak performance. I haven't tested a Power Wagon, but I prefer full size trucks, so I think I would like that one as an over all vehicle. As far as the best crossover goes, probably the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk for capability. I haven't tested a ZR2 yet either, so that might make the list somewhere.

    why do people still touch the gauge cluster? You create fingerprints, then you try to clean it and create scratches in the process. You might as well use dish soap and steel wool to wash the exterior while your at it.

      Thanks for the sub! The Platinum will be a little nicer inside and have more features. The TRD Pro has a small suspension lift, but much better suspension for traveling off-road. Their towing and payload capacities are roughly the same. I believe there is a self leveling rear air suspension and driver selectable adjustable damping shocks on the Platinum. They are priced almost the same but 4WD is standard on the TRD Pro and is about $3k more on the Platinum.

    Would a solid rear axle with internal bypass shocks be about as comfortable as this Sequoia setup, so independent suspension without internal bypass shocks?

      I can't say for sure. The solid axle is typically a stronger and more simple setup. Hopefully Toyota will get me a new Sequoia to test before too long. I did just get an LX600 which is a very similar platform and it did quite well.

    Now that you've had a chance to review many of the other vehicles in this segment, how does the Sequoia Stack Up?

      As far as offroading goes, the Sequoia is the smoothest for high speed and can handle the technical stuff just about as well any of the others. I don't like the interior layout as much, the dash is really far away and it's not easy to make climate and audio adjustments. I'm excited for the new sequoia next year

    Thanks for teaching us how different systems actually work.
    I am still little confused. Here you show "4lo, trac on, central diff locked". But in my 2014 Sequoia, when I put it in 4lo, "trac off" light illuminates. Can you explain this pls?
    Another question: in 4Hi, is the brake based system still on without restricting the engine RPM like AutoLSD in 2H? Many thanks again.

      I wish I had the vehicle with me still so that I could go through that again. I know I kept confusing traction control with TRAC/ATRAC. If I remember correctly when you put it in 4wd low it automatically disables traction control, but not TRAC/ATRAC. TRAC/ATRAC is what applies the brakes to the spinning wheels to transfer power. It sounds like you already understand this but traction control can also apply the brakes as needed, but cuts engine power as well.
      It's hard to tell if engine power was being cut beyond the reduction in felt power from the braking of the spinning wheels. If you disable TRAC/ATRAC, then yes you get full power, but then you don't get the braking force to help transfer power side to side. My guess is that yes it will still reduce power, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
      Ultimately 4wd low is the best solution for offroading. The gearing on the Sequoia is pretty high so running at 50 mph in 4 low isn't too hard to do, but the engine isn't restricted and TRAC/ATRAC is still on.

    Hiw does the sequoia compare to the qx80, as for off road?

      The Sequoia is better as far as the US version of the QX80 goes. Other countries get additional offroad programming and a rear locker in the QX80 that we don't get here.

    Great review! It's a nice truck too bad Toyota charge so much for an old design. Don't get wrong nothing wrong with old design that works.. just that it's been out for so long they should charge less and less for basically the same truck/ design year after year so more people could afford and appreciate their great off road vehicles

      Then they wouldn't be the most profitable automaker in the world. 🤑🤑🤑 That's a big feat when you are not just making luxury cars but mostly mainstream and budget cars. The Land Cruiser 70 Series from the 1980s still costs like 60-70k. They amortized the cost for production like 30 years ago.

    I read the whole manual and it never mentions ATRAC. I'm coming from a 4runner, so it seems weird the Sequoia doesn't share any terminology with the rest of the truck/SUV line. Are you able to confirm, is "Trac" identical to ATRAC? Is it just always on, with no button? I saw your trick for turning Trac off. Cheers

      Honestly Toyota is a little ambiguous on the differences between the systems. I believe for the Sequoia they call it Trac. My understanding is that both systems work the same, but A-Trac might be more aggressive. I'll have to review my footage of the Tacoma TRD Pro and maybe I will talk about it in that video if I'm able to better understand everything.

    I know this is an old video and you may not respond, but do you think better tires would have made some of those shots easier?

      In short, no. Tires certainly make a big difference if they are properly matched to the terrain. In my testing I basically have 2 wheels with zero traction. Even the best tires wouldn't have traction on those two wheels. My goal is to test the traction systems to see how well power gets transferred to wheels with traction.

    for that price it should have front and rear lockers 3+ more inches of ground clearance . The TRD PRO badge is wasted marketing bullshit on this vehicle, basically its a supersized highlander with bigger engine and better shocks.

      I agree that I think Toyota should have done more, however this is similar to the Tundra TRD Pro. Both should have at the very least a rear locker.

    Beautiful SUV but if you want to go off road get a 4runner with a locking rear diff. My FJ cruiser would leave this
    rig behind. But man I want one.

      It does really well for it's size, and it probably handles high speed just as well if not better than your FJ (unless of course you've upgraded your suspension). As far as getting places the FJ, 4-Runner, Tacoma, and Land Cruiser will all go better than the Sequoia!

    What's the difference between the trd sport vs the trd pro. What do you get for the extra 10 grand

      The TRD Sport has a stiffer on road style suspension with less wheel travel but more control. The TRD Pro has very nice shocks with a higher ride height and more suspension travel for off-road driving. The Pro also gets forged wheels, aluminum running boards, and probably some other things I'm missing. Is it worth the extra $10k? That depends on what you're looking for.

      I would agree if that were all it was, but the tuning is so much better and there aren't very many people that will be able to overheat those shocks. This thing can go over large bumps and dips with ease and for very long periods of time without any fatigued or blown shocks.

    Trying to decide between this and a used lx570. Any thoughts?

      The sequoia is bigger with a lot more space inside. It gets better has mileage as it can be placed into 2wd. The LX570 will be much more stout, quieter inside, more durable, and less efficient. I believe it has a slightly higher tow rating, but not enough to really matter. Both are great, both should last a long time, but the LX might retain its quiet composure and reliability a little longer than the Sequoia.

      I really liked it, but skip the TRD exhaust. The droning caused one of my kids in the back seat to scream "make it stop!"

      Funny that I'm keeping my Explorer and adding a Sequoia for the same reasons. When you say skip the TRD exhaust, does that mean I should skip the TRD Pro trim entirely? Or can I swap about the exhaust?

      I believe this one had an optional TRD exhaust, avoid that option if possible. If you're leaving pavement and not going to lift the Sequoia then the TRD Pro is a great way to go!

      @@smattt it's still ok on road, but the suspension is a little soft for my preference. The TRD Sport adds a really stiff anti sway bar that really helps with body lean when cornering. I do have an off-road video of one of those on the channel as well. It still performs quite well off-road, but is a bit nicer to drive on road without being harsh at all. If you're having a hard time finding the exact trim you want, then it wouldn't be an issue to get any of the trim levels. They are a little different in their own ways, but none are bad. Also I want to be clear, this is all in relation to the 2nd Gen Sequoia, the 3rd Gen I've only tested the TRD Pro and I loved it!

      The TRD anti-sway bars are extra stiff for better on road handling, but they reduce articulation. The TRD sport gets those.

    At 5m44s you talk about 4wd High, Trac Off Centre diff locked, yet I don't see any power being directed to the front wheels when the back have lost grip. I thought that locking the centre diff would direct power equally to the front and back axles.

      It's hard to see, but the front driver's tire is spinning. From this angle it's blocked by the rest of the vehicle. You are correct, with the center differential locked at least one front tire and one rear tire must be spinning.

    The tires that come stock with this are garbage. I mean they are awesome expensive road tires for soccer ma. I told the dealer I wasn't signing anything until there were from BFGs in the picture.

      Doesn’t seem to hurt sales as dealership selling them when they roll off the truck.
