Iconic watch! Beauty in its simplicity. Tan/patina colored numerals and indicies go beautifully with the leather strap and tan stitching. And as he mentioned, it's remarkably comfortable for a large watch. More so than similar sized Breitlings. Nice video, Ivan!

Congratulations Ivan, fantastic watch. About 25 years ago when I started collecting my dad was very insistent on Panerai. He was a very serious collector with a lot of horological knowledge. So I took his advice and saved up and bought one in 1999. It’s the only watch that stayed in my collection since, others have come and gone. Only other luxury watches I’ve owned are Tudor and GS....I’ll take the Panerai any day. Size shape and design can be a bit polarizing, but quality can’t be denied. Great review as always man!

Beautiful man, I just bought a 915, after owning 5 previous PAM's, subs rads and lums. This one is my 3rd p5000, I LOVE that movement, makes for a nice Sunday morning ritual 🙂. Mine is a v series, so has the display case back like yours, unlike the solid one on the current 915's. I've come to realise that the fully polished 44mm Bettarini case is my favourite, and one of the watch world's icon's, so damn beautiful! Fellow sandgroper here.

I own this watch. Got it back in November and I love it. Have coveted Panerai for many years and finally pulled the trigger. Great review. I (fortunately) do not see a gap between my crown guard and the body. The power reserve has lasted for 8 days on a full wind. As you point out, it does take a while to get it fully wound, but that is part of it's charm imho. Enjoy the watch!

Huge congratulations, Ivan, and highly enjoy this piece of classic design and art! Great video as usual, and I really appreciated the strap fashion show. Panerais are truly gorgeous IMO, and I think people sometimes forget how old this classic timeless clean design really is. Their famous power reserve is of course also always impressive.
Personally however, even if I'd saved up that amount of money for a watch, due to the size a Panerai would look totally ridiculous on my tiny wrist. Sadly, since I adore that design. I'd probably rather look for i.e. a Grand Seiko in this price range (yeah, of course totally different design but still gorgeous watches).

What a great review! As someone looking to buy a panerai potentially in the coming year this was very informative. You tube reviews of this model are scarce! I have so much to say. Firstly, alarming theres a gap from the case to crown guard! Luminors have push in crowns so if this isn't screwed tight to the case is it watertight? This would be my only watch and I'd go swimming in the sea with it, should I be worried...??
Also looked at this, this morning on the website it now has a closed caseback! Thats not a deal breaker for me I actually prefer that but its interesting to note.
So strange the Pams historically never had minute tracks! As a dive watch when minutes are crucial you'd think that was mandatory.
Sure you know pams were basically derived from 1930s rolex pocket watches hence their distinctive looks.
Love the less is more style of this watch, no subdial or date to clutter the dial. Simplicity is genius!
The lume is a much lighter shade of brown than on the website, which I'm glad for, the dark brown and black dial doesn't work, glad to see it's much lighter in daylight. Also noticed that on insta posts.
Love to know more about the longevity on the lume, can you make a comparison/ timelapse vid?
Also and last I do love the numerals font of this model. They all differ subtly and this exact one is my favourite. Looking at this and a 779/424 currently...
    Thanks again 👍

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  3 года назад

Thanks for the comprehensive thoughts! I think the reviews are scarce as it is still a fairly new model, and Panerai don't loan these out to creators and reviewers like me :)
The crown guard is definitely screwed in tight and I am confident on the water resistance of the watch as it would've been tested individually. The gap I described reflects more engineering tolerance/precision and doesn't affect the water tightness.
The solid caseback thing is a curiosity on the website as it comes out solid on my mobile but exhibition on my laptop/desktop browsers. I confirmed with the AD that it is exhibition.
The lume lasts through the night... not the brightest (Seiko diver Lumibrite actually beats it) but still easy to read by the morning in darkness.

I was wondering what everything was for, I had everything. Then after this video, I realized the common theme of my failures... I didn't have a Panerai luminor watch.
I hope to turn my life around. Since I can't afford gas and insurance anyways, I just sold my car and traded in for my own Panerai luminor. The dealer said I will receive it tomorrow!

I find that with my other watches with chapter rings, rotating bezels 4 hz second hands etc to want them to be highly accurate and I get flustered when I notice something over 8-10 sec/ day too fast. Is there AR coating on that lens? It only looks clear when viewed head on, at any other angle it looks foggy. In your picture of the watch on 4 different straps only the top right hand picture looks clear and the others look grey by comparison. The lens on some watches looks so clear you hardly realise it's there but the lens of that watch looks obvious or am I just imagining it?

Awesome review. Great work. I will watch more from your channel. I am considering the Pam1313, same dimensions as yours. The size bugs me though. I have 17.6ish wrists, and have long arms as I am 6foot 3. I wonder if height and arm length also helps with bigger watches? In the shop it looks great, but I worry in real life the size will always bug me. My wrists are almost the same size as yours, and I wonder if you still are happy with the size? For the price I want no worries as there are loads of great watches ..but my passion is for this one, but not if I find out latter its to big after I wear it to the pub a few times and also attract attention for wearing for a watch that does not fit. Thanks for reading.

Hi there! It is a big watch but it is not inappropriate for my wrist. It may depend also on whether you have a flatter or rounder profile - the former would carry somewhat larger watches.
If you are rather worried about the size and fit, I would suggest getting a 1:1 knockoff or homage to try out first.

    Hi
I'm trying to decide between this and the PAM00176. I prefer the brown/orange markers of this one to the white/green ones of most other Panerai, but I'm wondering how noticeable it is in real life? On the stock photos they look very brown but on some videos here on RUclips they don't look that much different to the normal white ones.

    • @PerthWAtch

I love cushion watches, and the Panerai fulfils this with it's timeless look. However, the company suffers from delusions of grandeur! Their watches are over-priced for what they are, and the point that they cannot compete with the likes of Omega or Breitling for quality is very true. If this model was priced at $3000-3500 US I would consider purchasing one, otherwise not a cats chance in hell! ................Great review by the way!

Thanks for the feedback. I think quality wise it's fine, but it's the specs where it just doesn't seem to stack up - for cheaper you can get an Omega SMP 300m with ceramic dial, enamel on bezel, great quality bracelet, and a Master Chronometer movement that knocks everything else in the price point out of the park!

The Panerai Luminor is an icon not only of horology design but of modern Italian industrial design. Going back to its 1930s military roots, its form has always followed its function. What confuses people is what while Blancpain and Rolex and others like Doxa and Aquastar moved into the dive watch space starting from 1953 to 1970, Panerai had been in the space many years before. As a front runner in the field and as a small specialty producer until circa 1994, Panerai did not engage in the use of chapter rings, helium release valves and the other hallmarks of what people now perceive as “must haves” on a diver. Panerai needs to be appreciated on its own terms upon which it succeeds splendidly. I treasure my manual wind PAM00632 for different reasons than I have treasured my other divers such as an Omega 1200 M, a Doxa Sub 300, a Grand Seiko SBGA229 and a Seiko Samurai Great White Shark. There is much PAM bashing but mostly from non-owners. The satisfactions of having a Panerai on one’s wrist are many.

Disappointing. The first watch I ever assembled was a Panerai clone. I put a regulated and decorated UNITAS movement in it, with 9 o'clock seconds. Domed sapphire crystal and a sapphire caseback. I picked a black sterile dial with white lume and put it in a black PVD case. It's great. One of the most accurate watches I own. Total build cost of around 400 USD. I just don't understand how Panerai keeps going with their pricing. I do, however, appreciate the 8 days of runtime they put in that movement and I think that's where the money is best spent. The look is commodity at this point but the guts of these things is the most impressive part. You have the real thing, there, and I'm very happy for you.

@@PerthWAtch interesting. I have enquired about one and been told it’s a closed caseback..

There was a bug on the website where some browsers show display and others show solid back. I wouldn’t trust the dealer employee unless they’ve taken the pains to check with the Panerai distributor who has stock, or they actually have the watch physically in store.

One of the Panerai watches on this video is a copy of my Steeldive. For the life of me I can't understand why it has an exhibition back. It's not worth $6000, but in my opinion no watch is

@@PerthWAtch best watch for me is the Luminor 2. Not so thick, not so wide...
Also the Luminor 40 or the RadioMir 8 Days are great pieces. Or on standard Luminor the Chrono Fly Back Zebra but the price goes up...as I'm sure you know.

Nice dial , but could do with minutes marked and a second hand (even if it's just so you can tell its running). Crown guard looks clumsy and the buckle looks immense. Hand wind is handy on watches I use occasionally but if you need a watch to use all week just buy an automatic.

Interesting comment about the guard and buckle (often called “pre-V” style) which are both icons of the brand - I actually appreciate them, and they are part of the Panerai DNA for many.
Hand wind is something that’s not for everyone and certainly not for convenience... it’s a whole forum conversation and more on this. For ultimate convenience, well... I would get a quartz!

@@PerthWAtch Obviously personal taste is the issue here or we would all be wearing the same. As for quartz, I have twice been let down in the Greek islands by a quartz watch's battery with no hope of finding a replacement. Phones don't always work out there so I was reliant on a handheld GPS.It won't happen again

Haha what a story! Sorry I wasn’t complete in my last statement - for ultimate convenience (including not running out of battery) I would go with a solar quartz (a la Eco Drive or Tough Solar) :)

@@PerthWAtch I would agree with you except that I recently bought a Casio solar and it didn't work, it was perhaps too cheap (maybe "refurbished ") I will give it another try from a different source, they do have some promising looking options.
