- In this episode of project blown RX8, I take the engine back out of my RX8, bring it over to TREX performance, and rebuild it with Justin. Then we get this car started and on the road for the first time! Hope you enjoy this full rotary engine rebuild video, and subscribe for more videos like this!

Yea the side seal clearance info is sparse on YT. I should have put a video together years ago to help you guys out because most people don't understand how important it is to get it right. Most failed rebuilds are because of people not knowing how to do the proper clearance. As soon as I get a blown engine, ill put that very DETAILED info out there and it will cover all generations of rotary.
That's what makes YT great, people who are willing to share info and experience and help each other out!
@@baxrok2. Well most people are lucky having a platform like this. No such thing existed when I attempted my 1st rebuild back in 95 as the internet had just barely launched. Us early folk had to learn the HARD way. Lol!
@@rotaryperfection Well said! Learing the hard way often forces us to understand things more thoroughly and IMO produces the best results in the end.
Just subbed because i wanna know haha
Honest to god I wish I had know what I know now my car would had been running
Aye, I’m bout to put my engine in my car today. Got mine from rotary resurrection. It looks beautiful. Hope it goes good, congrats on your engine starting!
Kevin did mine too.
Love his tattoo.
He does excellent work
i was so happy at the startup, congrats great video as always !!
My boy Justin is rebuilding my rx8, the silver one with the red suns decals was my old one
How much was the rebuild
How much ?
@@Carlos.Rivera 1k
@@Xehanortlw not bad!!
He took aoit the engine from the car or you did that job?
@@Carlos.Rivera he took my engine and put it in another body, unfortunately I crashed mine but the motor was still intact
Justin is such an expert, the compression are perfect , so happy the car is back to life
Good stuff! Thanks for showing us all the work that goes into rebuilding the renisis!
Bro thank you so much for this thorough process i dont think it can be appreciated enough the amount of effort put in. Great Stuff!
To confirm, a .004” is the correct clearance, but .006” should work just fine. The important thing is for it not to bind. Your mistake was doing a .002” which jammed the side seals. You did such a fantastic job everywhere else on your rebuild though. Loved this series and hope it helps others who want to rebuild their engines.
YAY another upload! Been looking forward to this.
Your face when it fired up , priceless !!! Keep up the good work . Thank you for your vids
Dam looking forward to this. Just what I was waiting for too.👌👌
Big props to you and Justin man! This is just wow.
So happy for u dude! I can see how excited and nervous you were about it’s first start up. Such a happy moment my guy 😎
Dude I LoLed at how happy you were to get it started… way to go!
So great to see man! Great job!! 😉
Damn a whole rebuild in one episode
Heck yea, awesome content, I was just as anxious as you for the start up... I just recently rebuilt my RX8 had the same feeling
Seeing that smile on your face when it started what amazing. Congrats on the start my dude.
What are your thoughts on the street port so far?
Great job! Right decision to leave it to rotary specialist and nice to do a street port...
Great work japanda , I like your series , do mistake life and learn , I great when great people around are willing to give you hand
Congratulations on getting the car running, must’ve been an emotional roller coaster. 👍
Man I'm loving the series! That rx8 deserves the great treatment
That rx8 deserves *needs* great treatment, or we'll get another rebuild video XD
Your happiness brought me happiness!! Congrats man, awesome work! Keep up updated on the street port! How does it feel? Also, maybe check out Elite Rotary shop in Schaumburg Illinois, they just came out with a new turbo kit for the RX-8
Glad you got it running!
You were so close in the initial build. I'm very happy you got to meet Justin and get it resolved.
it was was amazing to see how hard you worked on it and shown your efforts Thumbs up from pakistan
Wow! That’s so cool you make me want to get an rx8 now 😂
this gave me the hope i needed for my new series 2
Enjoyed your rebuild episides. I appreciate that you weren't sure of your skill. I loved it for you when it started
blue one is gonna run better than the black one now :) cant wait to see what you have planned for it
6thousands, the thing to learn! Great man, Congratz!!!
Amazing vid bois!
That was awesome!!! Another RX8 on the roads and not being stripped for parts :)
rad video. Helped me know in the future, to not rebuild myself lol. Nice to put a face to Justin as well.
Liked your upload.proud of you.
Damn that must take a lot skill, I wish my 8 would come back to life I don’t have a lot of money for diagnosing it, but hopefully one day I will know what the problem is :(
That was awesome lol, im happy for you!
Great job mate keep up the good 👍job.
Dunno why I got this notification 11hrs later....but better late than...weeks from now 🤣. Banging episode!
Awesome congratulations
Porting the Renesis isn't really a good idea. There's not really much if any power to gain from it, and you're really only serving to cut your fuel economy down and worsen mid-range drivability. Mazda already squeezed as much as they feasibly could from these engines at the factory. Porting makes sense on the REW because the exhaust ports were located in the housings, whereas on the Renesis it's on the irons. There's hardly any room to work with there, and you aren't gaining hardly any power (maybe 10 or less) and it's not worth the tradeoffs at all.
I love the content though. Just trying to spread some knowledge around. The more people understand about rotaries, particularly the Renesis the better.
totally disagree. If anything, all renesis motors should have the exhaust ported as this is the biggest issue they have with heat build up, carbon buildup which kills most renesis motors. Mazda made a sacrifice moving the exhaust port to the irons to improve emissions to meet the strict euro emission rules. It's not advice I would give any rx8 owner. The exhaust porting should be mandatory in any renesis. Intake porting is minimal gains so porting intake if your are not modifying anything else isn't worth it especially if you are paying someone to do the work. REW and earlier motors all have intake ports on the irons so they are not different than the renesis. at least smoothing the ports aids airflow and reduces turbulent air into the combustion chamber which you want.
I'm so happy my rebuild started on the first try. I have driven it for 10000km since the rebuild and it's still working fine.
Im rebuilding mine thanks for this video. I am happy for you to get it running. I'm sure this will happen to me when I finish my rebuild. Also how much did it cost you?
Glad you got her goin congratulations
This video made me so happy :D. Oh, and be honest: you know it doesn't only need wheels, it also needs lowering ;).
Literally the only build series that I get excited for. Can't wait to see what's next! Also how can I score one of those sweet Japanda tuning stickers??? Wanna rep on my RX8!
This was so satisfying to see. I’ve been watching for so long and to see you in a shop rebuilding your engine with a rotary pro makes me wish I would’ve just let my rx-8 sit until I could afford repairs. But at least my passion and interest in them lives on thanks to channels like you. Keep up the content brotha and congratulations on a new build with lots of compression! 💯
How expensive are the engines to rebuild and repair?
Edit also was it a 1.3 or a 2 liter?
@@singlecell2498 currently going through this process because I just bought my RX-8 back from the guy I sold it to. I’m gonna get a used engine and transmission combo for ab $2800 and hope for the best. My engine lasted over 100k miles so I hoping I’ll get by with a low mile used one. Plus ab $1000 in labor since I’m paying a mechanic I know at the dealership I work at. Roughly $3,800-$4,000 if you’re kinda lucky on a mechanic. You can save hella by just doing it on your own.
@@singlecell2498 also it’s a 1.3
Nice job, greetings from Germany.
PS. My rx8 is an import from the USA🇩🇪🇺🇸
Great job getting don’t by a pro. Hope you build one yourself with success in the future!
I'm loving these series so far and it is only making me want to buy an rx8 as soon as I can, the first 2 things I'll do to it is a rebuild and a bridgeport to get those sweet sweet braps going!
Not to burst your bubble but just know there is little to no power reason to go to a bridge port. The rx8 already has the largest intake ports compared to other 13b engines. Going with a larger intake port will cause you to lose all your low/mid torque while ruining your fuel economy and drastically narrow your power band.......yeah you may gain a few hp up top, but losing more on average across the lower 7krpms sucks.
Ha e to start thinking about a video for the racecar. Season is coming and we're looking at doing some local event that you should be able to attend.
What a relief 🚀
I love my RX8 picked it up for 2500 90,000 MI white black leather 6-speed runs great got 103k on it now few upgrades Corvette coils k&n inbox cat delete runs pretty good I can honestly say if it blew up I would rebuild it I'm in the process of rebuilding a 13bt for my 88 turbo 2 tenth ae I'm very excited to have it back on the road and experience turbo rotary again but I'm glad I have my RX8 to keep me rotarying during the rebuild
See, I'm keen to pull apart and rebuild a rotary. Well it kinda goes with the territory. The only thing that scares me is the looks I'll get walking out of the pharmacy with a massive tub of Vaseline for the rebuild.
💙 bro you the man....congregation
Great to see!
I'm going to go triple check my side seals now before putting it back together.
The Mazda specs are a little misleading. 2 thou (0.05mm) is way too tight and binds up like you experienced. But it's what Mazda put in the manual 🤷♂️
the trick is to measure them while pushing them in. not in the sprung out position
@@Maydarx ding ding ding
Trex great shop kudos
Such a happy man :D
Planning on buying an RX8 online next time and rebuilding the engine so it will be good as new >=D
truly a 🗿 moment
good video, i guess the smart way to diy would be to get the seals and porting done by a shop.. then do the assembly, still satisfying but reliable
16:26 When you see his eyes open up when it starts lol love it
love the vid
It lives!
THE SATISFACTIONNN
Right on!!
What an awesome series man. I fist bumped the sky when the little wankel started :)
I and my dad brideported mine and I built it at 18 put it in and runs perfect
I've been looking at a bridgeported RX8. How is it running? Did you get a tune?
I wish I had one of these cars
How much did this cost? Rotary specialist are rare these days; I'm not looking forward to doing this in the future. 😅
I know you prolly wont see this but there are jack stands that bolt to the wheel hubs that are much safer to be on a lift with👍
great episode! What's next for the blue rx8?
i thought street port was the stock porting haha, ive so much to learn lol
Longer videos finally!
Congrats! Don't skip the undertray though
Is the street port an overlap port? How has it affected the low end torque? Nice video man
I'm very interesstred in RX8 but it was never 'the right moment' to buy one!
I have the same plan to buy a blown engine.
But before I rebuild the engine I would flood the combustion chamber with diesel, petroleum, white spirit or aceton a couple of days. In these days rotate the engine by hand, reflood, flood to clean the gaskets, seals and springs!
White spirit or petroleumis one of the most effective cleaner in industry. WD-40 or engine flush ... are most petroleum!
Insert 50ml or 2fl. OZ white spirit some miles before oil change you would be astonished about the effects to the engine with the new oil.
After this flush the engine, start it ... test the compression. If engine will not run better or start, rebuild it now.
Awesome dude. Did the side seals get clearances to 6thou? Did I hear that right?
Hey brother that was a great video with lots of awesome information. Can you make a suggestion though? The music was really loud compared to the volume of your voice so I had to keep switching between being blasted by music and being able to hear your voice. Otherwise I really enjoyed the video and series so far.
Great job. ??? Where can I get one those japan tuning decal ????
Congrats dude! How much did all of this cost? Thinking about rebuilding mine
So, your main problem was the side seal clearence ? Thank you for your videos.
Good to see him not using those rubber gloves when putting the apex seals in.
I'm fixing to rebuild my engine in a shinka I just bought, first rebuild! One question though what do I need to do with the ac system so I dont spray myself with freeon😂 Also do I have to have front wheels off for anything? I'm rebuilding off of 12in raceramp blocks so their sitting on tires. Preesh!
Damn the last few minutes I was smiling the whole time, my coworkers think I am crazy just smiling and giggling. Lol
Cool blue roto
Would it be better to use pin gages instead of feeler gages when the seal and pocket have a curve?
Are you going to get MazdaEdit and tune it a bit?
The smoke of success! 🤣
Was he fixing cast iron pitting when he used the epoxy or jb weld? if not what was that he was doing?
What was the steam coming from underneath at the end while driving ?
nice!!!!
Ngl, this really just gave me hope, maybe my car will turn on once again
How much did it cost, not including the actual car or wheels, to get it up and running with a street port?
Wow, I felt sorry for you a week ago because my turboed RX8 was finally running great(after 10 years of rebuilds) But I just blew mine up again yesterday... I changed my waste gate actuator to a 7psi one and I drove 5 min and it over boosted to 18psi and leaned out and f-ed it again.... currently removing it to see the damage (✿◕‿◕✿)
Do you need a tune when you street port?
Anxious about the next video.
When is it coming out?
What kind of engine oil was filled?
Castrol noticed.
Just got a rebuilt engine for mine & it has problems sometimes won’t start on the go will have to wait a minute or 3 /:
Rewatched this video 5 times now.
So happy to see it live again.
Can you please compare your Street ported performance/economy to your original Rx-8?
What brand is that lift for the cars? And what did you pay for it? I need that for my garage.
Red RX-8 in the background during side seal clearancing looks like it has wide body fenders. Anyone know which kit that is?
This is like perfect cuz my engine is about to go haha
