The fact Plasma natively supports HDR, VRR and proper fractional XWayland scaling, puts it SO much further ahead than GNOME. Honestly, it feels like nowadays GNOME is not focusing on aspects of the desktop that are actually important to Linux users... I mean, my laptop is unusable at 100%, I really need 125%-150% scaling; anything that isn't a multiple of 100% looks awful, it's just a shit experience.
True lets hope gnome with its 5 year plan focuses on getting those features, im excited for cosmic rust desktop tho as they are working hard on getting those features as soon as possible but for now kde plasma os just where its at :>
gnome actually has proper scaling, but it is "experimental" even though it works perfectly for me. I guess that's what being the biggest makes to anything - project has gone kinda lazy
Personally fractional scaling is just a pain in the ass: worse performance, worse rendering in some apps
I just set it to 100% and increased the default font size.
That does the trick
KDE software is just so ugly, I'm convinced people use gnome just because it has better graphic design
I do agree its not that great but its features for gaming are great, when cosmic comes around in a stable way ill move
As nate of KDE said, Plasma 6 was the migration from Qt5 to Qt6, it fixed and broke quite a lot of things, plus was an excuse to remove a lot of legacy things.
Plasma6.1 and above will be the feature updates.
One of the best and most underrated channels. You actually review the changes and not review the generic os capabilities again and again. You should have more subs
This is my main channel for news until I get starting posting more on my own
I'd love a Linux Mint Plasma 6 edition ...
that would be awesome
I do miss it, it was my favorite flavor of them back in the day.
I use an Nvidia card and having explicit sync with plasma 6.1 coming out on my birthday is a SOLID gift
Hell yeah, i hear there is currently one issue with explicit sync on nvidia with firefox, hopefully that gets fixed before the release
@@linuxnext oh thanks for the info, i'll look it up !
currently makes firefox crash alot! I hope so too@@linuxnext
You can see the stability and fluidity really quick. Impressive, very nice
Proud supporter here. I'm on a yearly plan. Amazing what these people are developing. I find it a very healthy way of paying for the software that I use.
the wayland buttons fix and saved window position on restart are amazing QOL
18:03 - 18:52 Finally, I am very glad that this flicker/strobing VRR has really been fixed, I am on 6.0.5 on Arch and for this reason I am still in the Xorg session (AMD RX 580 gpu). As soon as I get the 6.1 update, I'll probably switch to Wayland, but I'm not sure. I need the last 3 or 4 things, these are multi-window programs, remembering their position when the windows are closed, visible icons in portable programs (for example, in AppImage) and mouse focus of the window background for interaction and that's it. I hope that these protocols will be implemented as soon as possible because I really want to switch to Wayland completely.
Yeah those last things will be a while since people love to discuss how it should be done, for me i dont mind
This was one of this fixes for vrr
invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/5626
I would say 6.2 or by the end of the year we might have those features available
I'm old and crusty. I have been using KDE since 3.5 and I will say they have done a great job in making a full featured DE, but stability and fixing "minor" bugs absolutely needs to be prioritized. If they can tighten up the experience, I think convincing people to switch to Linux will be much easier
Agreed, they have 6.1.2 that got released yesterday
6.1.3 on the 16th of this month
6.1.4 6/08/2024
6.1.5 10/09/2024

So lots of bug releases happening the next couple of months instead of feature releases

Excited! Your video on Bazzite sold me on Linux and I made the switch today. It already runs great with my 4080, but I’m excited to see things progress there. Happy to finally break the windows chains, especially with their insane ai spyware push!
What distro are you using?
Glad you're enjoying it :)
A couple of annoying bugs I have encountered.
1. You have disable floating Taskar. Otherwise there's stuttering during virtual desktop transitions.
2. If you enable screen edges to show overview/current desktop/all desktop windows, then you can't click on any of the windows to switch/focus. You have to click on Desktop or hit escape.
3. In file indexer, you have to disable "contents of files" Otherwise Baloo runs for eternity and consumes alot of cpu and disk space.
Great content, very interesting and informative
I've been ahving a good time so far with plasma 6, the only relevant bug I encoutered was solved quite fast!
I look forward to tryng 6 .1 as well.
thank you!
Nice review
The bottom corners of windows can be rounded in the window decorations setting under color and appearance.
Great! Also, do the fix the issue that when you playing using 2 monitors if you shake your mouse a bit fast it scapes to the second monitor and minimize the game?
What games does this occur on?
I really like the changes that 6.1 brings. Gonna wait once its stable though, and I bet nvidia users are gonna have a hayday once driver 560 drops as well. Or maybe even now using mesa 24.1 with NVK if you don't need NVENC and CUDA. I really want those for Resolve so NVK isn't viable to me but I plan to experiment with it. I assume "NVK is ready for prime time" means it's viable now.
Yeah people are saying it's viable but games are a work in progress still but the desktop will work well lol
What's that desktop wallpaper you got there? It looks really cool :)
I have posted it twice in the comments lol should be able to find the drive link
Problem with Plasma 6+ is no way to live wallpaper. That's one of those things that once you have it you can't give it up lol.
You can have a live wallpaper on plasma 6 with the "HTML Wallpaper" plugin. Not as straightforward as before because you can't set a video directly, but you can create a simple html file that plays the video you want locally on your disk and point the URL to it. And actually there are many live wallpapers that use HTML direktly, those work out of the box with the plugin! :)
Ohh and looks like video wallpaper is back too. So live wallpapers should be fully working :)
But haven't tried that myself yet
Shake cursor would be very useful for 4k monitors
I increase the cursor size inside settings, making the cursor larger all the time. But I am an old guy with limited eye sight though😂
👍!
As someone with a 4K main monitor and a 1440p Second monitor that are the same size, I need functional fractional scaling. Wayland + KDE is the best option for me. In addition, I can use VRR and different refresh rates OOB with Wayland. It’s a headache with some Nvidia driver stuff but I can only hope they’re forced to improve support and that over time everything will fall in line with Wayland requirements.
It’s just like the switch from 32-bit to 64-bit. Painful, and unnecessary for many when it first came out, but important for long term compatibility with more advanced hardware and features.
FINALLY remote desktop on wayland.
Nice video,
That wallpaper is really cool
can you please share it
yes you may :)

Very detailed video! Can you share what theme/color scheme are you using? Looks very nice with the transparency. Also very smooth animations in this version, can't wait to try it as for the longest time plasma felt laggy in some cases
Its breeze lol so stock plasma 6.1
@@linuxnext thanks for your answer! The panels in the stock dark theme in plasma have black-ish tones and in your video they seem to be another color, I thought maybe you had changed the theme or something else to make them look like that

Could you do a video on how to setup mpv player with auto download subs, and some other configs, plugins + frontends players for it.
Another video on good apps to have on Linux? System monitor, text editor etc Just moved from windows so would be great to know this stuff.
Thx
I use haruna so i dont know about mpv and yeah i could do the apps one :P
For system monitors there are resources and misson centre tho, they work great and show information well as a gui system monitor
Only 1 crash in 2 days. Not too bad!
🤡
Mouse stickiness is great, one thing that's been really annoying when switching from Windows.
I hope gnome fixes its theming support like it had for gtk3. Consistent uniformity accross apps is the only big issue on linux DE's.
Nah, Zorin's Gnome theme is still the best for ME. Simple, beautiful and consistent.
Intel ARC A770 working well over here on Plasma 6. Can't wait for MS to screw over more customers and come over here after adding their OBS Studio all the time feature. Also, their own crypto-locker feature for hard drives to (Bitlocker by default). 😂😂
Shake cursor should not be enabled by default, but it's brilliant. I use 2 monitors and I often lose it. Shake cursor would fix it.
im using kde 6.0.5. and I can add a lot of wallpapers at once not sure about that, I never had that bug.
I think it was before 6.0.5 so its all good now
Yep it was 6.0.4

Are there touchpad gestures customization yet? I am wating for them ever since they added these gestuers in 5.25
when looking through the touchpad settings on 6.1 i see the following
general: disable while typing, left handed mode
tapping: tap-to-click, tap-and-drag, tap-and-drag lock
two-finger-tap: right click(three-finger tap to middle-click)
middle-click(three-finger tap right-click)
scrolling: two fingers, touchpad edges, invert scroll directrion(natural scrolling)
scrolling speed
right-click: press buttom-right-corner, press anywhere with two fingers
I tried upgrading to the Plasma 6.1 beta and now I have very odd mouse cursor behavior. When on my main monitor, the refresh rate is 144hz for everything except the mouse cursor. It seems locked to 60hz. But everything else including apps, games, and UI elements are operating at the correct refresh rate. But if I have a focused window like a game or Firefox on the main monitor, the mouse is at the correct rate as long as it's over the window. Have you experienced this?
Yes i have, Thats because they changed how the cursor behaves in focused modes because of vrr problems, before in some games moving the cursor around would make games flicker because it would cap the fps of the game when you move the cursor so they changed it to this
what computer are you using for linux? Is there a laptop would you recommend for Linux? Like Tuxedo or System76, especially for gaming?
My main pc is a ryzen 7600, rx 6700 10gb, gigabyte b650 aorus elite ax v2, 32gb vengeance ddr5.
Yes those companies support linux and have great support so id recommend those companies or something like a slimbook also
If your getting a desktop then amd would be a better choice but for laptops im unsure as some people have problems with amd on laptops but that might be something else happening.
If it was me i would get a amd laptop for playing light games on linux
amd thinkpad lmao
I tried to install the KDE Neon Testing and Unstable versions, version 6.1 is there, but I didn't find the Remote Desktop there. Do I need to install something additionally?
You need the KRdp package
@@linuxnext I didn't find this package in the Discover App Center-(Does it need to be downloaded only from GitHub? There should be a release of version 6.1 tomorrow, will this package be there?
Hi! Can you test if you can run Plasma with different scales on different screens? I have a problem in Plasma 6: on my laptop screen, I need a scale of 200%, and on my main monitor, I need a scale of 100%. The scale on the laptop screen is not working...
Just tried it and yes i can lol, my main monitor is 175%, the second monitor is 50%, and my third monitor is 125%, all scaling properly
@@linuxnext WOW thx :D I need to test beta :D
@@WojciechZdziejowski i'll add more context also, they are running under 2 display ports and then the 60hz monitor is running under hdmi, all working correctly :>
Screen lock without password: the setting itself it's not new. The delay has been there already. New thing is how you choose the value and allowing you to not require password (for screen locker to act as a screen saver).
16:10 you've clearly never used a large multi-monitor setup. The cursor can easily get lost when you have a setup like mine. That's what shake curser helps with. Same concept as the old curser trails on early versions of Windows (you're probably too young to remember that). Having that turned on by default when you have "hide cursor after inactivity" also turned on by default makes perfect sense as well. If you are watching a video on one screen while reading something on another screen, you can easily forget where your cursor was last at.
How many monitors do you have?
Really do not use Rawhide in prod, sometimes things get pushed and it breaks stuff.
Any chance you share your wallpapers /wallpaper folder?
yes it is in the comments somewhere lol as a google drive
Im still not getting the 6.1 update past like 2 or 3 dependencies that have an update. Im just supposed to do an update after editing conf right?
Do you have kde unstable above extra?
@@linuxnext i should've given more info. I'm on CachyOS and I had to put the unstable and extra testing above CachyOS v4 for it to work I think. I've successfully updated to the beta but with Adaptive sync i see the mouse stuttering until I open any GPU related like moving window, opening a game, running a video, recording. It's just like cursor is stuck in lower hertz and everything else is syncing fine. So while gaming with Adaptive on no issues. But generally it stutters
Also, thanks for the video!
@@LeviArbalest yeah wouldn't recommend that as cachyos likes to modify a lot of packages
@@linuxnextForgot to update. I've since reverted back to the stable version by forcing a downgrade after putting them back in order and hashing. I know it's probably not adviced but I don't daily drive linux as much yet and can afford to mess around 😅
@@LeviArbalest fair enough, downgrading packages is mostly fine and shouldnt break but of course it can, it just has never happened to me
Fuck GNOME. All my homies use KDE Plasma.
Why did you pin Steam on both taskbar and desktop?
Steam did that(created the desktop shortcut) not me lol
HOLY SHIT.
thats why my terraria side mouse buttons didn't work.
I literally ended up downloading a newer SDL version to force the game into wayland 🤣
how i can share screen with audio on discord with kde wayland ?
You can use vesktop, vesktop created their own api for their discord client so it can work, but discord themselves havent added support yet as they dont think its important as we are a small market
Have they fixed the stutter you get EVERY 5 SECONDS?
Did you see any stutters when i was moving the windows around? I didn't mention any stutters when playing games so that should answer your question which is yes they have
If you create a trash desktop icon and delete a file does your trash icon disappear? This is make or break for 6.1....
Interesting it does :( has a bug been opened?
@@linuxnext Yessir. At first I thought it was a Tumbleweed bug cuz thats where I found it first and I use Tumbleweed (cuz its the best distro) but then realized its an open bug with KDE. They have acknowledged it but haven't fixed it since 6 released =(
@@froedge sadge, hopefully it gets fixed, makes no sense for it to delete the shortcut lol
@@linuxnext If you don't like this behaviour, you can just use Windows, hu?! o) Just kidding, but you maybe get the point. Accepting lower standards than usual is not an option! Let's reach for the stars! o)
The Remote Desktop feature is only local…
Ah i see
16:54 shake cursor is something that is default on MacOS.
Ah i see i see
I wish there's an official way to install the beta nvidia drivers on arch.
true
I really love the look and feel of Plasma 6. But I have to go back to Mint. Just because installing print drivers is so much more streamlined. I tried to install a print driver for a network printer with Plasma and I could not for the life of me do it. It is impossible to do.
I would give it a try again when you can, if you learn some more you'll get the hang of it and after you do it you don't have to do it again, my printer does get detected and i can print to it so thats a rip
@linuxnext the network at my job is on a whole different network than our wifi. It can be detected through our wifi. But for some reason, KDE Plasma won't see it. I was trying to use IPP with a PPD file. I put the IP of the copier in my setup, but it would never work. LINUX mint, on the other hand, worked. Not sure what I did wrong. I really want to use KDE Plsama 6, but Mint seems to be the simplest OS.
I'd like to donate but their donation system is siloed into Paypal and I dumped PP long ago. I guess I could mail a check
Yeah kde do personal checks i guess 😂
Rounded corners, yuck! Still no full transparency option for the taskbar. Why I wonder? Xfce has the option for years.
just a personal choice by the devs, if you want it then you might be able to customize it, or you could just use xfce like you are
@@linuxnext on plasma 5 I used a widget can't remember the name, but didn't work anymore with 6. Yes I will stick with Xfce.

@@linuxnext and, in my experience, plasma is EXTREMELY buggy with 555 drivers... maybe it's driver bugs, though. On both arch (with kde-unstable) and fedora rawhide
at least there is no flickering in my games...

7:47 Plasma/Kwin itself doesn't support Vulkan yet, at least not upstream.
oh i see i see, my mistake :P
According to TechPowerUp, your 5005U has a HD 5500 iGPU, which seems to only support Vulkan 1.0 - so it wouldn't be supported by Plasma anyways, as the Vulkan roadmap states:
> require Vulkan 1.3 and all the extensions that make our lives easier. We have OpenGL as a fallback, so compatibility can effectively be ignored
@@linuxnextall good, I'm just nitpicking
im pretty sure it does support vulkan 1.3, checking the info center it shows vulkan 1.3.279, i remember searching about it and it isnt maintained by intel officially but its supported in mesa, i think thats only for windows
vulkan.gpuinfo.org/listreports.php?devicename=Intel%28R%29+HD+Graphics+5500+%28BDW+GT2%29&platform=linux
i have the bdw gt2 so im all goods, its funny how linux supports a higher version then windows lol
playing like valheim through proton is funny also as i only get around 10fps
@@linuxnext Ahh, my bad, I should've checked GPUInfo instead.
That's nice to see. ^^ Mesa often provides more extensive/longer support than anything proprietary, but I didn't expect it'd go from Vulkan 1.0 all the way up to 1.3!

Is PIM / kontact suite still slowing down everything ?
Hmm i dont know, i don't use that i dont think
Plasma 6.0.5 is still so broken. Not buying 6.1 is going to be suddenly perfect.
Only one way to find out
I didn't use KDE in years, and now I see why. It still feels like windows 95.
why does it feel like windows 95? is it the ui?
@@linuxnext the ui philosophy - fixed menu bar at the bottom, menus etc... I think over the last 20 years we evolved in terms of ui/ux and it's time to move on. Gnome tries, not ideal but at least they try. Hyprland has a bit of a learning curve attached, but for now, that's my ux of choice.
@@ytfeelslikenorthkorea yeah but why do we need to innovate if something is already good enough?
Sure gnome is unique but kde plasma is what most people want so changing that wouldnt be a good idea, and i guess thats why gnome exists and other desktops so people have choice
Now kde needs modern apps
I would say its modern O_o thats very subjective tho
Still sucks lets wait and see if its better than gnome in all aspects
What suck's about it?
