Israeli Druze | Israel Phenomenology | Unpacked

- This week on Israel Phenomenology, we’re unpacking the Israeli Druze. This little known community is just one of the various ethnic groups that make up the diverse population of Israel.
The Druze are known for being loyal to whichever country they live in and the Israeli Druze are no exception. Such is the strength of their allegiance that the Druze say they have a blood covenant with the State of Israel.
So how does this community - an Arab-speaking, 1000-year offshoot of Shiite Islam - fit into Israeli society? Why do they serve in the Israeli army in higher numbers than Jewish Israelis? And just what does the controversial Nation-State Bill mean for them?

As an Israeli Jew, I must say that I feel like we Jews aren't giving the Druze enough respect and recognition for their contribution and involvement in the state. We are the first to show gratitude to them when they enlist in the army like us and for the sacrifice of their fallen soldiers, but we tend to forget about them when they finish their service. Their infrastructure in their towns is often old and unmaintained (their waterpipes sometimes freeze on cold days in the winter), they are treated like Arabs in security checks at the airport (which is a different issue in general, but the Druze definitely don't deserve that shitty attitude), and the government tends to ignore their opinion on domestic and national issues, like what happened with the Jewish State Basic Law a few years ago. They deserve to have recognition and quality of life more than all of us, and it makes me sad to see them being ignored by the public unless it is Memorial Day.
The druze should be happy they are tolerated. The army pays well and I feel they knew the consequences of living in a non-arab country.

Satanism!!!! No joke....
I admire the Druze for the way they are able to obligate themselves to their religion AND their country of birth ( in this case Israel) , I wish more (ultra) religious Jews (in Israel) were able to emulate this amazing achievement .
Whenever I come across Druze when visiting the North of Israel , I thank them for their loyalty and commitment to Israel , it's the least I can do
Druze are genuinely the nicest people who give the most to the country, and unfortunately get less of the rewards
I just learned about them on RUclips a couple days ago.
Israeli Druze are much more respected in Israel as Citizens while in Syria and Lebanon government not giving them basic human rights .
This religion is very peaceful and they appreciate fair treatment from Israeli Government.
TheTruth that's not true druze used to fully control lebanon for a LONG LONG TIME until the early 1900s, they still have ALOT of weapons here and a very prominent political party, and they still fully control the mountains of the chouf
They are less than 1 million around all the world. Ramy Ayach and Amal Alameddine are Druzes, I have one friend his name Wael he told me.

I am syrian druze and thats kinda true
Like all democracies, Israel is not perfect and there is room for improvement in relation to Israeli Druze. Having said that, and having learned Arabic from my Druze teacher in high school, serving in the IDF with Druze, having a Druze financial advisor, being a guest in Druze homes in Israel, I can unequivocally say that the bond between Druze & Judeans in Israel transcends citizenship & politics. I cannot speak for all Judean Israelis, but I can say for myself & my friends, we have the highest respect for the Druze People in Israel, whom I see as my brothers & sisters in life & destiny.
Thank you Amir for your kind words. I am a Lebanese Druze who for the first time in my life I met my Druze cousins when Israel Invaded Lebanon in 1982 (they all came over as part of the specials forces in the IDF). I was educated by them about our Jewish brothers and the great connection between both of us (the Druze & the Jews). Now I have much more respect and love to the state of Israel and hope one day Lebanon and Israel will become friends to go visit all my cousins there.
@@robbrod4134 Thank you Robb for your message. I could not agree more. It breaks my heart to see the tragedies befalling thr Lebanese people, ordinary people trying to live, work, raise families.
On a different note, Druze people that I have met are amongst the most honourable people I have met in my life. I am still in touch with Zaher, my dormer Druze financial advisor, even though I moved and no longer bank at that branch.
Us Jews find the Druze as our cousins, genetically, geographically, historically etc. They are very secretive like Judaism, must be loyal to their home country like Jews and have similar laws and codes (obviously there are still many differences but you get my point) and are a moral and non dogma based religions and ethnicities. Iv met some in my life in Israel and our interaction is never more than just a smile and helping eachother out with whatever.
Druze like Jews and the religion is a combination between 3-4 main religions. That’s why this religion consider all other religions and they respect all of them when they are respected back for sure.
Thank you for saying this Noam! I am an american druze and i feel the exact same way. Thank you for writing it. We are the same people in reality despite what european powers try to impose! Divide and conquer is the trick they tried with us and our people after the holocaust. They still want to destroy the jewish people secretly i think when they try to divide us. I do not appreciate being labeled as different by the nation state law when that is not how i feel. It breaks my heart when they try to LIE and turn us against each other. We have been the same people for 1000's of years! Look how they spelled my name in english! Instead of hillel! Its a trick to turn us against each other as we are being labelled off and sectioned off by people who dont understand. This video was awesome to watch as well thank you!

A Jewish state is no more a paradox than an English state, a German state, a Japanese state, etc...
Yup. Same with Poland Czech China Vietnam.....everyone. Just like the Arab republic of Syria. Lebanon and Iraq are countries who tried to blend too many ethnic groups and religious sects and it never quite worked out. Maybe Iraq can be next. A Sunni Arab Hashemite country which is west Iraq and south and east Syria and Jordan. An alawite country in the north west. A Christian Maronite country. The borders in the Middle East today ethnically make no sense it’s almost as if the British wanted to divide and conquer so they purposely made those specific borders so that none of those countries would have a chance at being completely peaceful(except for Jordan, who, you guessed it, are mostly Sunni Arab or Bedouin so not too much diversity)
However, Germany, never implied anywhere that Germany is a German nation state. It’s technically just like America, a multicultural state, as there is no mention of the state and land in connection to the German people the way Israel is specified to be an entity for the Jewish people inside the homeland and outside the homeland in the diaspora. I think England and Japan are nation states tho
@@danielalbo4994 I disagree. Germany doesn't even typically provide citizenship unless by blood. There are millions of Turkish who've lived there for generations without citizenship. Germany is also about 90% white European and 80% straight German. So not very multicultural.

"Many people think Israel is made up of Jews and Arabs" - the video is fantastic, but it's noteworthy that the Druze are an indigenous Arab people, as are most of the Christians living in Israel / Palestine. In fact, the Druze were involved in some of the earliest anti-colonial, Pan-Arab, nationalist movements in the Middle-east.

"People think Israel is only made up of Jews and Arabs."
"Seriously?"
"What about Christians, Muslims, Bahai, The Bedouin?"
-That's because most Arabs in Israel (and occupied territories) are Muslim, Christian, Bedouin, or Druze.
Adding to Motti’s reply, technically, also the vast majority of the Christians of Israel/Palestine and the rest of the Levant are not ethnic Arab, but are of Aramaic, Assyrian, and Canaanite roots, some of course still retain these identities to this day like the Syriac/Assyrian/Chaldean churches, as well as retaining the Aramaic language.... Add to that the Armenians of course which have already been mentioned.

What a great and fun analysis! I want more! Can you please do separate talks on Ethiopian Jews?
I loved your talk. I am non Jewish, non Christian. Not religious at all. But I am deeply sympathetic to Israel and the Jewish people. I’ve studied the topic for most of my adult life, voraciously reading everything from all sides. I came to my own conclusion after much analysts not just an emotion. I find them to be a curious phenomena. No other group of people have been so discriminated against and reviled. You can almost call them a “miracle” how they have not only survived but thrived! Jews are very much the indigenous people of the land to say otherwise is just another legitimization tactic. Israel has many issues and problems but it is very much a democracy. It’s a young nation only 75 years young, it’s a work in progress just like another younger nation- the United States. No other country has achieved what Israel has in its short history in Middle East. Heck, many countries in the world. Hence much of the envy they receive. I am confident that in the years to come it will work out its internal problems.

The Israeli consul in Brazil is druzze. Many druzze who scape from ottoman army recruiting, immigrate to south America.
Many democracies favour one religious or ethnic group over others. In the UK, for example, the national flag contains a (Christian) cross; only Christian holy days (Christmas and Easter) are national holidays and only high ranking Christian clerics have an automatic entitlement to sit in the legislature.
And the Head of State doubles as the Head of the Church.

With all due respect, minorities in israel imo is better off than minorities living in predominantly muslim or islamic countries, like the druze in the golan heights captured by israel in the 1967 war from syria, these people are not forced to acquire israeli citizenship are not require to serve the army but they have almost the same right as an israel citizen, imo their lives are relatively peaceful they are not persecuted knowing that their allegiance is still with syria...

Jethro was an important figure in Scriptures, yet he's often overlooked, he treated Moses well and became his Father in Law, he pointed Moses to "The Mountain of God" and gave him good counsel.

They serve in the Israeli army and defend Israel. That's how welcome they feel in Israel.

Druze are the oldest Israelite tribe their true name is the monotheists first people to follow Aton and his exodus from Egypt worshipers of Ra or IL. Plus the King of Druze Shoaib is the father in law of Moses and taught him Mystic Judaism Hikma or Kabala
Amen! Americans can absolutely learn from this! Thank you for your insight!
If you like music, I recommend the Druze Israeli singers Sharif and Loai Ali
I’m so glad I found these videos. And to be able to learn about the Ethiopian and Druze here has helped me appreciate Israel so much more.
