Why America Leads The World In School Violence

  • 27 school shootings this year... why does America lead the world in school violence? In my observation, the well-intentioned anti-bullying movement has paved a road to hell and cultivated a generation of victims. This is the most offendable generation in our nation's history, and we are reaping the lessons we have sown.
Many American children are not mentally healthy because we have taught them to be mentally ill. Social and emotional resilience education must become a well-funded priority if we hope to counter the unintentional consequences of the anti-bullying movement.

This is mind-shifting! 11:42 "I ask that you think deeper: The reason why children are not mentally healthy is because we taught them to be mentally ill." Thanks BROOKS GIBS

Brooks, thank you! I’m a school counselor at a middle school and have worked in elementary as well. I’ve watched and used your videos for the last 7-8 years. This is so true! It’s great to hear you point this out. Love the questions you ask in these videos. I’ve always been so torn on the “anti bully” movement. I agree with your approach. We have to teach our kids to be resilient when they get bullied. I tell kids all the time, “bullies don’t go away, you have to learn how to deal with a bully”. Thank you for your content!

We can stop bullying, where we can...., AND make our children resilient enough, to know..., they can make it through every type of bullying.... and will still be okay. RESILIENCE is key. We must also take the time to teach our children, boys in particular, violence is totally UNACCEPTABLE.

I agree with you wholeheartedly…and it is time to stop debating and go straight to the HEART of the matter…You bring to light what no one has dared to say…God continue to bless you and further your work on behalf of children who have been ‘crying’ for someone to get it right so that children can’t grow up the way God intended! I taught SpEd, and sure, there are students with needs that are nurtured in that setting, but schools have also created a dumping ground for children who are asking for so much more than a classroom can give them.

Mass shootings don't occur just for mental health reasons, otherwise it would be as frequent in other countries as in US. The difference here is the accessibility to assault weapons. I agree with you with the mental health part but it's not enough

I would also say that it's trendy for killers to choose type of terrorism too (sad to say). It's sort of an American problem.

When it comes to “military type firearms” or any firearms, the issues are the EXACT SAME issue imo. It’s not the types of firearms or even firearms in general, if you think it is then read about all of the knife attacks in China or even closer to home in the UK, it comes down to the parents teaching their children self worth, value of life, and responsible firearm ownership. I have three sons and yes I have a lot of firearms, they are all locked in large safes, BUTTTTTTTTT even if they weren’t locked up all three of my sons (who are 7,9,12) have learned firearm safety and also respect and know that they NEVER touch firearms unless they are with me at the range or a safe lawful place to fire them.

Wow, what a profound and unique message, that should've been obvious. I think the problem you've emphasizing is relevant not only to the situation in schools, but society in general. So many grown-ups operate in the same way, shaping ideologies and social movements in according manner.

I’m Australian & have recently become very interested in the culture of violence that seems to be fairly uniquely American. I’ve been looking into violent crime, the homicide rate in the US compared to other developed countries per capita and the prevalence of gun violence & more specifically mass shooting. I’ve been mostly interested in & baffled by gun ownership, the lack of any real gun control and the 2nd amendment.
I’m all for gun control, get rid of them, I say. Guns are the problem. But the yesterday I saw something that really made me think. Yes absolutely, guns are a problem, but Ive come to realise that guns are not the problem. The narrative when it comes to mass shootings is focused on the guns. How many there are in American homes, how easy they are to get, whether gun control should or should not be introduced… But limiting the dialogue to the ease of accessibility and possession of guns is really missing the point.
Guns, in and of themselves, are simply tools used in the commission of mass killing. The crux of the problem isn’t the guns, it’s the people who pick up their guns and use them to shoot dead as many of their fellow Americans as they can….. The number of mass shootings in the US is I believe somewhere in the vicinity of 20x more in the US than in the other countries of the west per capita…. WHY? What is happening in America for so many more people to be carrying out mass shootings? Happy, healthy, well adjusted people who come from a culture that fosters good morals and values do not carry out mass murder on innocent strangers. They just don’t do that. So all the many American killers out there are not that. Something must obviously be lacking in their lives and morality. But then the absolute vast majority of unhappy people who maybe also have ill health and/or other hardships don’t choose to pick up guns and murder as many people as they can. So it follows then that the number of Americans living unhappy lives must be really enormous. Why?
Why, in the self proclaimed greatest country on Earth, are there so many more unhappy people??
There could be a million guns in American homes but if people aren’t wanting to pick them up and shoot others to death then the guns aren’t as much of a problem.
If the increasing number of mass shootings is ever going to decrease again, then I believe that it’s imperative that the some really hard questions are asked and that it’s just as important addressing gun control, to get to the root of the cause and that is why do so many Americans have so much hatred and despair in life that they develop murderous mindsets and go about committing these mass acts of violence and death.
You’re one of the first people I’ve seen who’s looking into who exactly is carrying out these mass shootings and why they are wanting to do so.

Exactly!! I teach youth in firearms. The disconnect some kids describe is nothing like anything I felt when I was in school 35 years ago. It is a cultural and social issue.

Brooks, I have just come across your video's by chance as I was looking into bullying and what you are saying I completely disagree with your points of view regarding to the anti bullying movement. I live in the UK and it would be nice if there was a policy on anti bullying and harms bill in the UK as I was bullied throughout my childhood from being physically abused by parents and family and then bullied at school and it has affected my entire life as an adult, eventhough I am resilient with alot of things in life bullying has affected my mental health and even my education even as an adult so maybe you may need to try to understand it from a child's perspective as to why they act in haste, torment, and hate causes anguish and self hate, even to the extent you eventually start to criticize your own actions even when the bullying is no longer there, because you have become accustomed to it, so then you start to amit that behaviour down to your own children so it becomes distructive on their mental health and that is not how society should be. So I am very sorry to say I disagree on what you say but alot of American children have lack of appropriate discipline because they know they can get hold of a weapon at their disposal to prove a point and that is where the USA are going wrong not the anti bullying movement as they have that in the right place. Once you get rid of the accessibility of guns then you'll see behaviours change. There are alot more people with mental health issues due to childhood bullying and trauma's, to allow for adults without mental health issues in the future, we need children to grow up without torment and anguish because that does not bring on resilience within children, because children who are bullied at school are also being abused else where and eventually there comes a breaking point in their lives and that is why we are seeing more children commit suicide.

I don'''t work for Brooks Gibbs but I endorse his work with families and schools. Parents who want to know more about helping their kids be resilient can pay $97 for a series of Brooks Gibbs videos called "raise them strong." Brooks uses humor and storytelling to deliver insights that can help kids learn important lessons about how to handle criticism and bullying.

Thank you, this makes a lot of sense. I would add that it also has to do with wanting to be famous (grandiosity?). If school shooters were precluded from becoming known, that would significantly reduce their motivation of “rather be dead and infamous, than alive and anonymous”. Aside from that aspect, the idea of helplessness that is promoted in schools is absolutely disempowering and insidious. Parents have been too reliant on schools, and we need to take our power back.

I totally agree with you. However it is a complex problem. Mass shootings happen in other places besides schools. Military grade weapons belong in the military. If you want to shoot those type of guns then be a real hero and join the military.

God isn’t real. Hopes and prayers lack action and change. If you want to make a change, stop praying and start doing because your god abandoned us long ago. You’re the same as those cowards who hide behind their guns and power to make anything right.
Before anyone says shit about god being real, I’ll give you the meaning of faith in the Oxford dictionary: *strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.*
It’s the fucking supernatural. Get over yourselves. Religion is a tool for social control and oppression.

Also Brooks roll play is one thing when your showing bullying with words, it's different when the bullying is silent and you just get stared at for asking questions on a Social Work Degree course because your there to learn and mature adult students mimick what you say and pull faces with it and talk behind your back but don't have the bollocks to say it to your face because they have the insecurities of not being confident to ask the questions you do in class as well as it being racial bullying because your the only Asian person on the course.

This may be the most important Anti Bullying video I've ever seen. I'm a middle school counselor and our children exhibit extreme weakness when it comes to handling criticism. We teach them to tell an adult then they learn to have others solve their problems. Kids (and many adults) offend so easily and we must teach resiliency, "good comebacks" (as you role playing videos brilliantly show) and overall ability to not take everything so damn personal. You are right, we need to reassess our anti-bullying message so kids can deal head on with criticism in a non violent way.
