I used Vallejo wolf grey which is a bluer grey on my 1/2500 model. The Aztec decals in that kit were still a much more vibrant blue so I added a blending coat of the base paint to tone down the contrast.
These decals look great, but cost more than the model kit itself! 😲, I agree with what you say that they should include some extra "spare" ones so that we can experiment with different base colours before putting all of them down onto the model.
I think the best approach may be to remove all the molded in aztec panel lines. Not sure if removing the lifeboats would benefit from that approach as well, but it wouldn't hurt. And yeah, a bluish gray paintjob would also go a long ways towards making those decals a bit less garish (more of a Panzer gray, perhaps?).
A theory I have that may be true is that AMT when designing this kit used the 4ft filming miniature as the basis for this kit and not the 6 foot. The 4ft model has raised details on the filming miniature that match with what is on the 1/1400 kit. BTW Panzer Gray is way too dark. The D was definitely a Bluish gray but I think it looked more like Flanker Gray instead which was a blue gray that did resemble the gray base color of the D on the TV screen.
@@michaelbenjmitchell1 That is impossible: they designed the kit in the late 80 around season 1. The four foot model only arrived around season 3 or 4, years later. Besides, the paneling between the model kit and the 4ft is quite different.
I was really hoping to see how the lighted windows look when they're under a printed decal. Are the decals fairly translucent, or would you have to scrape out the windows again?
It looks good but kind of dark to me. If one were building this, could they get away with using a lighter base color, more like a very pastel baby blue?
I think these decals profit from misting over a light coat of the base color for blending them in into the hull to make them pop less. Otherwise they seem fine.
You've done a great job applying all those decals! However I personally think they've made them too blue. Looking at pictures of the ship online the colour transitions are much more subtle.
i was thinking the same, when i apply mine i might mist a lighter shade of color over the decals to tone it down, ill try this on the bottom somewhere first.
Thanks for the video, I was considering buying them but they look like they went too blue with the colouring. They almost look like the same colours used for the TOS-era Aztec decal set, which don’t quite seem to fit. It looks visually interesting and you did a great job applying them but I don’t think I’ll buy them for my kit.

I don't get why they're so dark, the aztecing never had that much contrast on screen.
I just bought the model; I am thinking of ordering some painting masks for a more sublte Aztec Pattern.

Agreed. Although I would keep the life boats on, since the hatches profit from the plasticity.

Wow she looks awesome
Yea, I am considering using the Wolf Grey as well to go with the decals. Or a nice Duck Eggs Blue.
Duck egg blue is the original paint callout for the Enterprise:)

RealFX Studios have announced a 37" Studio Scale Defiant - the trailer for the preorders hit RUclips today - is that a project you would consider?
It looks very blue, I look forward to seeing the end result.

Try G-Cals decals (US) by Gus Snipes. They are not as dark as the AMT ones. They are pricy, however, at $75 USD!
Seems like there are not problems with putting them over the raised panel lines. I thought it would have aid bubble problems but I don't see problems.

Does anyone know if this release of these decals is less blue and more gray than the 2016 release?

I can't believe they don't tear with all the touching you are doing.
look mainly good, i have a set for my polar lights 3/350 1701A .
You mean 1/350 Refit right?
The decals just look too dark for me...
The contrast is way, way, way too high for a realistic appearance.
