that last piece is incredible. after it first appeared on the screen before me, i thought, how the hell....ohhhh. the length of the sliced wood, not the width, allows for greater spans when steamed and stretched. love this.
I do think this is innovation. A new perspective, new construction approach that delivers different results both visually and practically. There are lots of designers wasting their time and the publics attention by just trying to innovate based only on shape and style, I say that is not enough.
Wonderful woodworker and artist! Frank Howarth made a clock in this manner. Beautiful also! Check out his you tube video of the build. I am in no way affiliated with frank but I do think you tube woodworkers are sometimes not taken for true craftsmen which many are.
A BRIDGE... (an idea/answer for the last sentence in the video ) like the shape Sydney harbor bridge, the slices would be the beams that support the arches of the bridge.... Similarly a bed head... (round, or rectangular).
I can't believe this extremely functional and beautiful fresh design work has any dislikes. I'm a furniture and making design graduate. And boy do I wish I'd thought of it.
People think that this produces less waste... until you count all the hundreds of scrap pieces of wood that an artist will generate perfecting the technique.
Always aesthetically striking, and technically exciting. From a >design< point of view, some of these pieces are a solution looking for a problem? I prefer those of the pieces which take real engineering advantage of the method. Maybe I'm just a fuddy-duddy ol' modernist. Maybe I worry too much about the dusting!
I can see a couple of problems these solve. Less glue, less waste, lighter weight, less sawing. Could be sold as a kit in un-expanded state for easy shipping with final assembly done by the customer. Heck it might even be stronger than traditional construction due to the arches created when the piece is expanded.
It is great! but :) I couldn't call it a Rolland technik. We cut single sheet of papers/cardboard in that way in the school well over 25 years ago, and make lamp shades and ornaments. Don`t know from where and how old this type of cutting is, but for sure it is excellent and structurally sound. Nice one!
This woodworking book “pepe amazing plan” (Google it) has a great deal of details about woodworking. The book also shows a few designs and descriptions on the materials used for different wood working processes and also the directions on finishing various procedures properly. In general, this book satisfied my basic desire to find out about wood working.

+Randy Taylor No, Peter Brown made the clock in this manner. Howarth's clock was individual rays turned on a lathe and mounted into a center piece.
+VR They're both great!
"You tube woodworkers" were woodworkers long before they decided to make videos of their work.

These pieces don't really solve any problems, they're just art. Beautiful, amazing art.
