Maybe I have not thought this all the way through, but wouldn't it be easier to put them in a strainer rather than on a lid? Then run water through the strainer. All you have left would be the sand fleas.
As noted below, I used to see them all the time in Jax, but almost never anymore. Is this the prime time of year to get them? My friend has a beach house where I've caught tons of pompano and whiting on shrimp. Sand fleas would absolutely kill! Great video!
Wyatt, Are in NC? I haven't seen any sand fleas here in Brunswick County in yrs. Used to see them all of the time. I'm sure they are still here, I've not looked at the right time.
This is great! Except that I was just at Moss Landing Beach and while I did see a lot of holes, I didn't see concentrated spots like what you found. It was right at high tide though, if I'd waited an hour I might have found them. If it is this easy I don't need the rake!
@ZMondoHype thanks for the response. I'm from North Carolina and we have plenty here in the Atlantic. I just wasn't sure if PCB had any bc it's in the gulf and the waves aren't as rough. Good to know. That way, I'll get to catch me some to fish with when I'm on vacation at PCB.
Yes they are around but harder to find. All the beach ‘renourishment’ garbage done on the gulf coast has hurt the sand flea populations even the natural contours of the surf where fish travel or station to feed. This video is a bit misleading, looks like an East coast beach..everything is much different on the west coast of FL. You’re not going to be seeing sandfleas wash up on shore and leave telltale signs of their presence like in this video. Most of the sand fleas are going to be in the troff just off the bank. Just have to keep digging til you find a bed of them. The surf over here is much calmer so waves aren’t going to be washing them up onto the shore.
There is, without question, a huge problem with sand fleas all across the African continent; people who go barefoot (which is just about everyone) have these things burrowing into their skin, on their feet ... and it causes horrible sores and what not ..... but .... these things are big enough that, .... how can you miss them? .... idk Y they're so seemingly unavoidable all over Africa .....
have you played on a beach with them before? I have lol, best time ever. they're very sneaky little guys. I wouldn't notice they were on me until i felt a pain on my foot, and sometimes theyre under the sand and when i lift my foot there's many of em. they're scavengers, eating any organic stuff they find on the beach. so they like to nibble on our toes.
after some research I found that the jigger flea causing the disease you mentioned is also sometimes called the sand flea. jiggers are tiny and live in the soil, and many houses have dirt floors. I hope this helps
y they called sand fleas? 😂 ye these little guys like to nibble on anything organic. this includes feet. they dont usually cause too much harm, just a tiny bit of pain
That’s like a Pinterest idea..”Why didn’t I ever think of that”😃😃😃😃😃..I’m doing that. Now, I’m thinking “hmmm”, fiddler crabs or sand fleas for Sheepshead?

Y’all give up shrimp and crabbing spots too?
I love that!! My parents would tell me to do it without giving me anything! But then there the compitition against my brother 😆
Easiest way? Bring the kids and offer them ice cream for a bucket full.👍
Lol
i would do it ice cream or not xD
@@silverfox9004ice cream or not I’d do it anyway
Super helpful, Man. Keeps me from buying a rake that I may use three times a year. God bless, Stay safe, Tight lines! - Hedge
Very good video on how its done..now show us how you are suppose to put them on the hook😉😁🕊🙏
I live this video and will give it a try this weekend. Thanks for sharing.

Exactly my thought.
That's a sand flea rake, the title explicitly mentions not using that. This is an easy alternative
This was my life as a kid!! Now I got kids to get the bait lol
Wow, absolutely great job man. I was actually able to see them with yr video for (my) first time. I can't wait to try it.
Great video, thank you for the quick tip that was new to me!
I'll just use a colander 👌
I was thinking a bucket with holes drilled in it.
Thanks! I've never owned a sand flea rake. Always caught them with my hands.
That works!
Awesome!

Thank you so much 😄
Wyatt,
Are in NC? I haven't seen any sand fleas here in Brunswick County in yrs. Used to see them all of the time. I'm sure they are still here, I've not looked at the right time.
you just gotta find the right beach. when i went to Oregon I was suprised by how each individual beach I visited differed from each other
Is this what's biting is on the beach, cause we don't see um? Or are they really no see ums?
What time of year can you do this?
All I do is look for their antennas when the water is going back then I dig one up
Sand fleas are adorable
Thank you for this.
You're welcome!

At 0:11 were this little patches past it sand fleas too? I’m confused on what you mean V’s???
The V’s are the shape of the antenna when they poke out of the sand after a wave comes by.
How do I download the Salt Strong song?
Is that what the sand piper birds run around catching?
Would you know if there are any sand fleas in Panama city beach, FL? Im planning on going there for the summer and I would like catch some for bait.
Yes, just make sure to scope out a spot with less people for fishing. PCB can get super crowded

man they are so cuuute 😍
Nice tip - so much for the rake
I will use this tommorow when i go to the beach
Keep us posted and thank you!
Best way I’ve found to collect them is to use a spaghetti strainer. You can get a ton in one go and it rinses all the sand off
Interesting thanks for sharing!
Lol, blows my mind that he didn't figure that out already
I put Sand on my hands and I out the sand flea on top of the sand on my hand it started to bury down and it tickles my hand
Never been able to catch on west coast in gulf only on east coast. Are they around here on the beaches? Thanks for video

A plastic garden scoop with holes in it work great.
Thanks for the tip!

Not the same bug
I hope this works. I'm too old to carry a rake too!
They don’t bite ?
No they don’t bite, harmless little guys
I’m at a beach we’re there is a ton of shells so it’s hard to tell for me
👍
Even better with one of those plastic sifters that come with sand toys
Coming here from that one short to confirm sand fleas are a real thing .
New RUclipsr Here
use one of those deep fry skimmers.
I live in St. Petersburg FL. Anyone know of a good spot in my area to take for sand fleas?
anna maria island
This is why I hate the beach, as a kid these freaked me out on a walk and ever since I can’t do it

y they called sand fleas? 😂
ye these little guys like to nibble on anything organic. this includes feet. they dont usually cause too much harm, just a tiny bit of pain
I have handled tons of em and never been bit
That sand crab is so small, but I like it
Great video. Why are the questions not being answered.
I thought before I spend the $75, I'd check to see what's really up with sand flies... Thanks
👍
That’s like a Pinterest idea..”Why didn’t I ever think of that”😃😃😃😃😃..I’m doing that. Now, I’m thinking “hmmm”, fiddler crabs or sand fleas for Sheepshead?
I use a d or shrimp net.
You could use a shovel and put it in a container
Good tip!
In South East Asia, we use motorcycle baskets.
That is awesome, thanks for the tip!
It’s all about the U
Jesus loves you
Take a colander🤷🏾
Y'all eat those bugs?
Can’t these burrow into ur skin
Ok, so what are you gonna do with them?... lol
They’re called fiddlers
Get a strainer...

Worst method ever
but lots of fun 😁
