I built my teardrop from the ground up 9 years ago and yes all of these mistakes are beginner mistakes but not earth shattering. I had previous experience with re building a few campers and when younger I worked a few summers for a mobile home company. I also worked in the electronics industry for 40+ years. The most important parts you got right. The wall structure and waterproofing the cladding would have be a game changer and unsafe over time. You did a good job.
Dont do vinyl planks when you live in a zone where it gets below freezing. It expands and contracts a lot with temperature swings and the LVP snap together stuff will come apart and/or buckle. It works fine in a home where its a fairly constant temperature, but not outside. Go with a single piece of vinyl roll flooring.
The great thing is that you are sharing not only the wins but the mistakes as well. This is why they say experience is the best teacher. Really enjoy your channel and this build series 👍 👏

Your project looks pretty awesome! I converted a cargo trailer so the structure was there, I just modified it. My 4x6 v-nose toy hauler-camper-theater is tiny compared to yours. Front 4x5 deck extension plus roof rack and hitch rack is extra room for 2KW Inv-Gen, LP bottles, Solar pnl, and Awning. 3 cabinets house cooking equip. and the 24"TV/entertainment center. Twin-size tri-fold sofa-bed, 5K BTU AC, elec heat and induction cooktop complete the collection (so far). Planning a folding room pinned onto my ramp that will be outside galley and inside privy w/shower pan. Room will tie down on the front deck. Pulling it with a 1.8L Scion XD gets well over 20mpg!

I would not worry about the flooring. I have used it in a cabin in Maine for 6 years and it has held up very well. You will have to be somewhat careful about water, but a floor mat and normal caution should be all that is needed.

WOW... what a great video and an honest one at that!!! I built three prototype trailer models. Each one was a wonderful challenge and I learned a LOT. I would wake up at 3:00am with a solution to one of MANY design problems and rush off to the shop. My wife would wonder why and I told her.... "If i go back to sleep I'll NEVER remember the solutions so I have to go now and work it out while it's in my head. She just laughed and went back to sleep while I solved some pretty crazy things. When they were all done, what I wanted to know/learn was this, what will each design cost, how long would a production run for each model be, and if the crazy thoughts in my head regarding out of the box designs would work and be saleable. After 6 months of doing them as side work (lots of after work hours) all my questions were answered!!! The start up costs were not available so onto the back burn they went. It was a lot of fun for me and a couple of my employees that want to help and needed the side work money. Everyone in our commercial area loved them and dropped by to see how they were coming along. A lot of coffee time was spent showing off the designs and for the next year or two I let people take the trailers out and "beat them up" to see areas that needed improvement. Again.... I had a blast doing it, and yes I did have my fair share of stressful moments wondering... is this the best approach??? What I have seen of your rig suggests to me you did a very good job!!! And after fiddling around for over 45 years I've learned one thing I shared with all my employees over the years and it is this... The only person that doesn't make mistakes is the one that doesn't do anything, so relax, you're not special, you too will make mistakes, just use them to your advantage and learn from them!!! Again... you did a GREAT JOB!!!
I have an rv repair business in WI, 1st its a beautiful built, 2nd thanks for the honest update. 3rd all rv manufacturers use regular house wire for all of the 120VAC but all of the 12VDC is stranded wire. Hopefully you haven't replaced all the AC wiring yet. Thanks again for the video.
Trying to built a custom travel trailer is a daunting project. I am an RVer and have a 32 foot travel trailer into the wilds of Central Oregon. I have toyed with what I would want in the future and still trying to iron out my expectations. Much of my use would be for overlanding and basecamp camping. It would need to be light weight, & strong. As for your comment about trailer tires, most of the travel trailers used for overlanding use Lite truck tires not trailers tires. I have spoken to many tire experts and many agree that good lite truck tires are safe. I do not know about state and Canadian laws but I do see lots of trailers with lite truck tires.
Most any commercial built unit is wired with solid wire. The stranded is not necessary. Staples to hold it tight to framing is all that's necessary. My 74, 79, 85, 88, 99 and 01 rigs have all been solid 110.
Caption should have read, 5 things wrong for my use. Nothing you did was wrong. I can see the flooring perhaps may not be right for an outdoor guy like you. The tires probably will never give you trouble other than being a little too big. In our province you can run any tire. Electrical, that is the wire in 99% of trailers on the road. You did a wonderful job. I hope to do a similar build. I purchased a 3500lb axle from Princess Auto also. :)

I think we all make similar mistakes when building a trailer I have made many different types of trailers and I think the wheel tyre combination and axle and springs are an ongoing Issue I think we just don’t understand how much things weigh especially when you keep putting more stuff my last van trailer I actually did some working out how much it will weigh as everything has a weight per meter or quart meter And I had worked it out to being about 700 kgs and when we put it on the weigh bridge it come in at 880 Wiring is always an issue I think it has come out pretty well and now want to build my own caravan like you 👍👍👍

Curious about your thoughts on the tires. In the US, I can find no specific requirements that trailers must use trailer tires. Perhaps I've missed something. I do know tires have load ratings and a builder/owner must be mindful to put tires with load ratings to match their vehicle. I'm also considering building my own trailer and want to use rims larger than 16" for the added ground clearance. Rims also have a load rating, so this must be matched as well. Given you only have a 3500lb axle, your jeep rims may have more load capacity than the axle, not sure on your tire selection. One additional reason I want to use larger rims, is so a slightly wider(and taller) tire can mounted. This way I can air down off-road to soften the bumps.

I had seen your trailer before (YT) and thought the 5 lug / 3500# would be an issue. This vid titled "... mistakes" hopefully jumps out at those who will are inspired to build and can thus learn and avoid the pitfalls you highlight. Excellent vid and points made. Overall a very nice trailer you have there. I have build a few but start with a cargo trailer. However even this isn't a guarantee that all will go well. My Spartan (I hope no one buys one), the tire clearance (back side) is 1/4 to 1/2" and rubs occasionally. I will need to buy spacers to increase the clearance. I did "overkill" it with 5200# straight axles for my total loaded weight of 6800#, probably one of a couple of things I did get right.
X O Rust paint for the frame (you'll thank me later) I disagree about the ST tires. My experience with them is less than stellar. Although I special ordered dual 6k axles I am running a 16'' tires on 6 lug rims, I went with Michelin 235/85r-16 in an 8 ply. The balanced out well and run very smooth down the road.
Could you provide more details on why a Jeep tire is bad vs trailer tire. I have seen many overland/off-road trailer manufacturers offering jeep jeep tires.

Only 5 man if I was so lucky when I do stuff. Appreciate your honesty. Just for your information, one jeep has 16 inch wheels. A 5200 pound axle is 6 bolt wheel fits gm truck wheels. I went to miska trailer manufacturers of trailers and took them my measurements and built me two axles for 120.00 dollars. If you took your trailer with you they could get the measurements and you would get what you need. Just saying.
Helper springs, air bags ... spacers ... jury rigging ... the 3,500 axle or 6,000 trailer axles all have common wheels that fit... why do all that other stuff when you don't have to...but I know it is too late
I’m sure the learning curve is quite steep for this kind of big project. 5 mistakes is nothing, I would have made 500 or so by now, lol. I’m looking forward to the electrical video, that system looks so sweet.
A possible fix for the axel and tires is to just go ahead get the 6,500lbs axel and then weld a lift kit to your frame for that axel this way the tire won't need to be a smaller dia. and won't rub on the fenders. And as far as the 6,500lbs axel being to wide just extend the fenders out. This way minimal things need to be rebuilt in order to fix it. Just welding on some steel to lower the axel further from the frame, and then build out the fenders, and then get those trailer tires, but the dia, you wanted to begin with.
Trailer "tire" or truck/other ... You would not need a specific "trailer tire" for your rig. Trailer tires are a MUST for tandem axles. That is what they are made for. The belts and side walls on trailer tires are basically designed to handle the side lateral pressures when back the trailer for instance. Car tires on a tandem can break their belts for the pressure. You have seen tires on tandem axles twist and look out of align when unit is backing ... easy to see on blacktop ... that is the nature of tandem. Any tire shop should be able to confirm this .. but they may not know or just say anything to get your money.
Just run LT (light truck tires) they are better than ANY trailer tire out there. then you can keep your rims. Heck, you can run the same tire as your new Tremor if you wanted to. Lotta people here in the states run LT tires instead of trailer tires. my self being one of them.
Great video! Have you looked into the timbren axle less axles? I got mine in 5200 lbs and 4 inch lift. Could solve some of your suspension issues. Been enjoying the content. Thanks!
Do you have a source for only ST tires being legal on a trailer in some Provinces? My understanding is that LT tires are perfectly legal on a trailer and it's the load and speed ratings that apply, not the tire designation. Great series of videos -- thank you for going to the trouble of sharing your journey!
Good video BUT, are you saying the factory jeep wheels and tires shouldnt be on all the jeeps and new jeep trucks (same weight as your trailer) at freeway speeds? I think the tires are fine. A trailer tire shouldnt be on a vehicle, a vehicle tire can be used on a light weight trailer. A "true" trailer tire has stiffer side walls, which is needed for heaver trailers but have a lower speed rating which is why trailer tires are cheaper than truck tires. Id keep the tires on there until they need to be changed.

I'm watching your set of videos to get ideas flowing for a low cost cargo trailer build. I probably won't stay in the trailer unless I build a heavy unit on the double axle base. Idea is to have a covered trailer to pull dirt bikes...
So idk where you read that you need to use stranded wire? Im an rv mechanic and i regularly deal with wiring on the daily and i can promise you that all the trailers ive worked on have solid copper wire. Hope this helps. No way that wire is gonna break overtime from bouncing. Wire it like a house is basically how the manufacturers do it. Make sure theres no sharp edges to poke through the sheathing and your set

great build series. Get some POR 15 for the frame. work of caution, don't get it on anything you don't black. That stuff doesn't come off.

Helper springs, air bags ... spacers ... jury rigging ... the 3,500 axle or 6,000 trailer axles all have common wheels that fit... why do all that other stuff when you don't have to...but I know it is too late
Adding adapters lower the weight capacity you would think.
I’m sure the learning curve is quite steep for this kind of big project. 5 mistakes is nothing, I would have made 500 or so by now, lol. I’m looking forward to the electrical video, that system looks so sweet.

A possible fix for the axel and tires is to just go ahead get the 6,500lbs axel and then weld a lift kit to your frame for that axel this way the tire won't need to be a smaller dia. and won't rub on the fenders. And as far as the 6,500lbs axel being to wide just extend the fenders out.
This way minimal things need to be rebuilt in order to fix it. Just welding on some steel to lower the axel further from the frame, and then build out the fenders, and then get those trailer tires, but the dia, you wanted to begin with.
Trailer "tire" or truck/other ... You would not need a specific "trailer tire" for your rig. Trailer tires are a MUST for tandem axles. That is what they are made for. The belts and side walls on trailer tires are basically designed to handle the side lateral pressures when back the trailer for instance. Car tires on a tandem can break their belts for the pressure. You have seen tires on tandem axles twist and look out of align when unit is backing ... easy to see on blacktop ... that is the nature of tandem. Any tire shop should be able to confirm this .. but they may not know or just say anything to get your money.
Just run LT (light truck tires) they are better than ANY trailer tire out there. then you can keep your rims. Heck, you can run the same tire as your new Tremor if you wanted to. Lotta people here in the states run LT tires instead of trailer tires. my self being one of them.

Do you have a source for only ST tires being legal on a trailer in some Provinces? My understanding is that LT tires are perfectly legal on a trailer and it's the load and speed ratings that apply, not the tire designation. Great series of videos -- thank you for going to the trouble of sharing your journey!

Good video BUT, are you saying the factory jeep wheels and tires shouldnt be on all the jeeps and new jeep trucks (same weight as your trailer) at freeway speeds? I think the tires are fine. A trailer tire shouldnt be on a vehicle, a vehicle tire can be used on a light weight trailer. A "true" trailer tire has stiffer side walls, which is needed for heaver trailers but have a lower speed rating which is why trailer tires are cheaper than truck tires. Id keep the tires on there until they need to be changed.

What are your thoughts on single 6k lb axle vs double 3k lb axle?
I know double axle is more components, more costly, but are there any other negatives?
Design of the double axle intimidated me. I found it easier to visualize a single axle design.

I have a double axle trailer with what I believe are 3500lb axles and I have a single axle trailer with a 1500lb axle. I'm watching your set of videos to get ideas flowing for a low cost cargo trailer build. I probably won't stay in the trailer unless I build a heavy unit on the double axle base. Idea is to have a covered trailer to pull dirt bikes...
So idk where you read that you need to use stranded wire? Im an rv mechanic and i regularly deal with wiring on the daily and i can promise you that all the trailers ive worked on have solid copper wire. Hope this helps. No way that wire is gonna break overtime from bouncing. Wire it like a house is basically how the manufacturers do it. Make sure theres no sharp edges to poke through the sheathing and your set
