I actually really liked the texture of Ultramarine Turquoise in the gauze test! I thought it was really unique and different to the others I've seen from your tests. That being said, phthalo turquoise is my first love, was on my first DS palette, and I cannot not choose that as my winner :)
I prefer Ultramarine Turquoise. I adore the affect of the ultramarine turquoise had with the gauze! The separation of color that would be perfect for rivers and streams! The way the color separates with the heavy watery wash! OMG its so beautiful! I have this tube of DS watercolor and never tried it but now I will. Phthalo turquoise is just too easy to make with PG7 & PB15.3 that is already on my palette.

It’s with new eyes and LOADS MORE information on pigments, their light-fastness, quality of wash, ability to mix with other colors and retain clarity, etc. (you know😉) that I build slowly. Sorting/reviving old Windsor Newton’s Artist’s. The Cotmans are mostly, (the earth tones are still good) relegated to practice. I got it down to ordering 6 new Daniel Smith! Just got them today- and wow weeeee, are they beautiful! So, now I find myself having a Jerry’s Artarama link open on my phone again- ya know, cuz, it’s like an addiction. 😜🤣 and I want more. 🤷♀️
OMG, I am in the exact same boat, but I am giving my cotmans away. I just bought a set for the travel palette. I dont want to struggle with bad paint. I have bought so much new paint and have a tab open for Dicblick, cheap joes and Jerrys all-the-time. It's starting to feel like an illness, ha ha. I have recently started to add acrylic and now I want to add watercolor to my oil painting routine (oil goes on top, lol). I have phthalate turquoise, but not ultramarine turquoise! And yeah, it’s one of my color loves. If you mix phthalate turquoise with perylene violet is makes a gorrrrrgeous........Neutral-ish purple sort of thing. Love it. Used it a lot in one of my inktober videos (the one of the wicked/wick’d witch!) I also specifically used that mix to do crazy amounts of layering in that piece so can also confirm that phthalate turquoise is an EXCELLENT glazing color! This series is super fun, and I love seeing your huge range of tests! And the movement of the paint being described as batshit crazy? Pretty accurate. =>.
Did I miss her pointing out how much the two colors separated, particularly in the gradation and gauze tests? It was really noticeable, but I didn't hear her address it.
The ultramarine turquoise is doomed to fail the gauze test, with it's granulating and not granulating combo mix XD These are so similar, yet I'd be hard pressed to pick only one, as I can see myself using both depending on the circumstance. Also, the mixes with UM Violet are soooooo pretty!! ♥ Thank you for doing this episode!!
Although the differences between them are sooooooo subtle, I would struggle to justify having both on my palette. Why does Daniel Smith have to make so many beautiful yet oh-so-similar colours?

I just bought Daniel Smith Ultramarine Turquoise!!! I have the paint dot card so I can see what the actual color looks like on paper! I'm in love with this color! I also recently found a beautiful color by Da Vinci... look at "Seaglass" PB15:4, PG7! I also bought their color sample dot card with 24 paints and it had a Cobalt Turquoise PB36 in it, also beautiful! There's so much joy in finding a feel good watercolor! Happy 😊 painting!
how funny, i like everything you were disappointed in. after this comparison i will be putting the ultramarine version on my list. the duel color show is exsactly what i like about it and the more controlled water effects.

I feel like turquoise is such a popular color at the moment! I wonder how these two compare to a PB16 turquoise? I’ve always also been curious how they would stand up to Holbein’s discontinued peacock blue with PB17, which made a lot of people sad when it disappeared.
I'm so glad you asked this. I much prefer the Daniel Smith's phthalo turquoise to W&N or Holbein's. I love the PB16 version too. I just find DS's one mixes nicer with their Quin Rose, and I am all about that Quin Rose 😂In terms of comparison, DS's one is s fraction more green-ish than the PB16.
These have got to be the most similar paints in this series yet! Wow. It's almost eerie how similar their mixes are too, aside from a couple of variations. What a shame ultramarine turquoise doesn't separate and granulate more because it would make it such a cool colour!
Ok now you’re just taunting me with Daniel Smith goodness! I have issues with purples and teals as in, if I could that would be the color of everything (with some hints of coral and blue here and there). This is such a great duo to compare. I love the Phthalo Turquoise, but the separation of pigments for Ultramarine Turquoise in the gauzing test is just beautiful!!! Why do you have to make my wish list longer?! 🤣 I mean it’s your fault, not mine, that I watch your videos and keep adding and wanting more colors. 🙄

I have the Ultramarine Turquoise and forgot about it as well. How funny. I checked my stash after watching this and found it. I don't see any reason to have both since they are both mixes. I try to stay away from mixes. If I like a mix color and use it a lot, like Indigo, I will mix it myself from tubes on my palette. TFS
What an excellent series. Now I know that I want to get moon glow and I myself would prefer ultramarine turquoise as I prefer the granulation. I also don’t like how overpowering phylos can be.
I would absolutely pick Phthalo Turquoise. I feel like Ultramarine Turquoise is a shade you can easily get from the Phthalo Turquoise. That said, when you showed the blooming....I absolutely love the Ultramarine Turquoise. However, I agree with you that it's not a reason to add it to my palette.

I have the Daniel Smith Dot chart but it doesn't have pigment information but I wish it does. The Ultramarine Turquoise is a colour that I mix a lot and use and never knew there was already a mixture out there on the market that would make things a lot more convenient !! I like the more subtle ultramarine granulation in the paint since it is something that is not very common with ultramarines. And that gauzing texture of the Phthalo Turquoise really messes with my trypophobia.

I like them both but prefer the color of the phthalo over the ultramarine. That said, phthalo colors scare me because they are so staining and leave little room for error. I don’t have either of these on my palette, but i do have cobalt turquoise which is a different color entirely. If i had to pick between these two you’ve shown, i would pick the phthalo even though its a staining color.
I haven't used turquoise colours very much, I should try and explore colours I don't use. You should try Tia from Eventually Everything Mixes it's PG50 with a black pigment it has beautiful granulation and feel it would work really well with your gauze technique! Seeing the colours in this video has given me an idea......
Are you still doing the colour showdown? If you are, would you be able to do cobalt teal blue and sleeping beauty turquoise? Or, if you think there are two even more similar. I've been swatching and swatching from the dotcard and genuinely just don't know which one I like more.
Very useful. I can't afford DS and I just bought 53 Holbein tubes, but I think I would prefer ultramarine turquoise just because I like the way it looks more

I had to, although at a certain point I was tempted to take the preselected 60 color box. I chose lots of colors I liked even if they were mixes or opaque, I also chose lots of toxic ones like cadmiums and cobalts, lots of pyrols and some essentials that I use a lot of like ultramarine. I chose the sigle pigments out of 2 similar colors like the imidasolones and isoindolones over the permanent yellows. I had to give up most of the earth tones that I don't use a lot anyways and I also got some crazy colors like cad green light and compose green. They should get here tomorrow. I'll let you know how I like them.

This is a super useful comparison, thank you! Recently I'm finding that turquoise (different brand, PG15:3 + PG7) is a really magical mixing color and reaching for it more and more often these days. It used to go totally ignored on my palette. Now I've been looking at turquoises in other brands so this comparison of phthalo vs. ultramarine is a great resource. :)
So glad this was useful for you. I've tried a few different phthalo turquoise and personally this one is my favourite. I find the other brands have a little bit more greener mixes.
With such beautiful cobalt turquoises available I do not understand why there is any need to use these less lightfast versions. i would be more interested if someone made a turquoise out of Ultramarine green with a green shade Ultramarine blue. It would be a weaker tinting strength color, but should be an excellent granulating color. However, the beauty of the new Deep Sea Green in the Schmincke super granulating range suggests that a turquoise made from PB29 and PG18 is the perfect way to go. High lighfastness plus all the the transparency of ultramarine and viridian with their ability to granulate makes that mix the ideal color. That Deep Sea Green is simply gorgeous.
A video on phthalo green BS and phthalo green YS? I already have phthalo green BS in my pallet. I really love mixing this colour with pretty much anything. I feel like neither of these colours are really... Appealing enough to justify buying it when I feel like mixing phthalo green BS with phthalo blue GS makes a colour I like more. Like. Even if I wanted to be lazy I could premix them on my palette; by which, I mean squirting some of each onto either side of the pan and seeing what mixture I get each time. Lol
Hi Oto. Have you tested Schmincke's Prussian Green? It's a mix of PB60 and PG7, not quite Phthalo mix (pigment-wise) but is quite strong as well. Would be great to know how different it is from these two... I don't even know why I need this many blues and turquoises, recently saw your Kremer Ultramarine Green swatch and am officially in love with that one too. They all mix differently as well and I keep having 6-7 blues on my palette :/
No I haven't tried it yet. I'm not as well versed in Schmincke as I am with Holbein and DS. I know what you mean about the blues on the palette, in my new one I have like 6??? Why do I need 6?

A video on phthalo green BS and phthalo green YS?
I already have phthalo green BS in my pallet. I really love mixing this colour with pretty much anything. I feel like neither of these colours are really... Appealing enough to justify buying it when I feel like mixing phthalo green BS with phthalo blue GS makes a colour I like more. Like. Even if I wanted to be lazy I could premix them on my palette; by which, I mean squirting some of each onto either side of the pan and seeing what mixture I get each time. Lol

Hi Oto. Have you tested Schmincke's Prussian Green? It's a mix of PB60 and PG7, not quite Phthalo mix (pigment-wise) but is quite strong as well. Would be great to know how different it is from these two... I don't even know why I need this many blues and turquoises, recently saw your Kremer Ultramarine Green swatch and am officially in love with that one too. They all mix differently as well and I keep having 6-7 blues on my palette :/
No I haven't tried it yet. I'm not as well versed in Schmincke as I am with Holbein and DS. I know what you mean about the blues on the palette, in my new one I have like 6??? Why do I need 6?
The only one I gave up (no more space on the palette) was Sennelier Indigo and everyday I look at the tube thinking I'm missing out 😔
I did exactly this for my last palette and regretted it the whole time. I'm firmly putting indigo back into my new palette.
