    Quin pink is really good for botanicals. It makes some lovely peach colours mixed with nickel titinate and is a decent replacement to for opera rose.

    PR122, PV42 and PV19 are so similar! PV19 may sometimes lean a tiny tiny bit towards blue a bit more, but differs a lot, even within the same brands. PV42 is, in my opinion, the most magenta-like one when using a CMY-palette. As you say, the lesser tinting strength of PV42 makes it easier to use for controlled mixing. Schmincke labels its PV42 as magenta.

      Great to know! I’m currently using PR122 in my CMY palette, but I’ll definitely give PV42 a go for a few paintings!

    Actually Pthalo Green with a Quin Rose gets you a purple! It's gorgeous ... and thank you so much for this. Quin Rose is a classic for a reason. It's just a gorgeous and such a good mixer.

    It looks like Quin Pink would be a nice, lightfast alternative to Opera Pink. It mimiks Opera's fluorescent quality pretty well.

    I really love quin pink, for some reason (even if it's incredibly similar to quin rose). I like the mixes it made and it's a great primary magenta color! And it gauzes ♥
    Thanks for this wonderful series, it was great to see all the paints being tested in the same way and yield all kinds of result. I can't wait for series 2 ;)

    Excellent comparison. I see that Daniel Smith makes at least 7 Quin hues that are possibly similar: coral, fuchsia, lilac, magenta, pink, red, and rose. Wow! It seems a bit overwhelming, but I suppose there are artists that would claim each of these as their favorite hue.

    • @OtoKano

    I don't really like pinks and reds so much... but I LOVE Quin. Rose. So much. I also love how it mixes with Indanthrone! A nice purple that doesn't granulate! I'm used to mixing Quin. Rose with Ultramarine and I didn't even think about Indanthrone! You did such a great job on this series! All the love to you Oto!

    Thank you so much or doing this exercise! I follow an artist who uses Quin Pink. I have Quin Rose in my palette (which I also LOVE) and also I use the Schmincke Purple Magenta pr122 so I was curious on how that compared to the DS magenta. I haven't wanted to buy the pink because it seemed so similar, and only sampled it from the DS dot card. I LOVE the way you sample the colors so thoroughly. Great season. Thank you again. I use my Quin Rose in florals & mostly alone or mixed with various blues - ultramarine. I love to use it next to Undersea Green, or Sleeping Beauty Turquoise!

I actually like the rose the least, thank you for this I know now that the pink and magenta are much more my style than the rose. I've used DS Quin Rose for a long while, but not a fan of it because it fades after it's fully dry and then looks a bit dull, especially for a quin. Looking forward to trying quin pink instead, it looks like a gorgeous and truer pink.

    Eee, thanks for doing this Oto! I use Quin Rose myself, but have the Quin Magenta CS next week and John Muir Laws loves Quin Pink. This shed a little more light I suppose, although they're all still so similar haha. I'll stick with Quin Rose (Daniel Smith and Mission Gold are my favorites), but am looking forward to trying out Quin Magenta soon! Thanks so much for doing this series!

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 лет назад +2

      YES! I am feeling a Quin Rose sisterhood brewing in this community :D I can see why John Muir Laws prefer the pink. It's a lot more subtle color, the most subtle amongst the quins. So it would be more usable in natural settings. I haven't tried Mission Gold's Quin Rose, do you think it's better than DS?

    I loved this series can’t wait till season 2. The quin pink is a good alt for opera as it’s not as intense and better lightfastness, quin rose (PV 19) is a must on any palette and when mixed with veridian for a granulating neutral tint or pthalo green for a non-granulating neutral tint ...I prefer veridian it’s the only green on my palette and only ever used in mixes ( quin rose is also a mix only color for me and never used on its own.) Keep up this beautiful series its a must for the community! Thanks for all your effort.

    You ended the season with bang: three colours who are so, so similar and equally beautiful that choosing between them is like choosing a favourite child! 😊 I don't have any of the DS colours but I think I do own at least Quin Rose and Quin Magenta from Schminke, Maimeriblu and White Nights. Interestingly Maimeriblu uses PV49 in their Sap Green. As I'm already in bed with an awful headache, so I won't check any of the White Nights pigments (they often use quite unusual ones in their paints) or try any effects with the MB sap green.

    I wonder if the high movement you encountered in the Quin pink is why it gauzed so well. Since the gauze absorbs the paint, more of the wash will rush in where it’s been sucked up by the gauze, so you end up with none of it left behind in the spaces? Maybe? Does that make sense?

    I had a problem when purchasing quin pink - I think I had one from a bad batch as it had such a sharp smell like a metal oil/welding shop. It wafts straight up my nose and is almost painful to be around. I tried to get an exchange and I got one that was just as bad from the store (online order). I never had an odor like this in all the paints I have, and none of my quin paints smell like this. Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be?

    Thank you so much! I like Quin Rose, but it's too strong for my (mostly) earth color palette. I think I'll try the Quin pink instead.

    Well I’m a new artist and the new Quin magenta has most often been recommended for painting. One lady suggested because you can’t make it using any other colours. I don’t know if that’s true.

    • @Lemu_with_a_shirt
      @Lemu_with_a_shirt 4 года назад +1

      Different brands of quin magenta look very different. If it looks like a proper magenta it is indeed not something you can make out of other colours.
      I would not call DS quin magenta a magenta at all, the quin pink looks better to me, if you're going for that.

    With the staining rating they might have been taking tinting strength into consideration?

    Personally, I like pv19 the best, but I'm not sure if it's because of its mixing properties or because it's just what I've used the most

    Oh hey!! Did I recommend these? They’re literally three paints that I tested against each other two weeks ago in preparation for the video that comes out tomorrow. : D I ended up choosing Quin rose as the one to go with for the painting because it was already poured in a pan and I love it, but I think Quin pink is a bit closer to what I was looking for!

      (I was specifically looking for a replacement to sennelier’s opera rose in particular, which is different and deeper than most opera roses I’ve used before.)

    I went into this hoping the quin pink was going to be terrible, lol. But of course it's beautiful. I really want to see how quin pink compares to rhodinite genuine - but of course I want to get both. I'm a sucker for pink. I don't like Quin magenta, but I am curious to see how it compares to... is it PR122? I'm pulling that number from the top of my head but I hope you know what I'm talking about :)

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 лет назад +1

      I haven't done a color showdown level of test between quin pink and rhodinite, but I would say rhodinite is a little softer. quin pink is certainly the closest one to rhodinite out of all the quin pink/violet shades.

    I literally thought about this comparison while watching the previous showdown :D Slowly becoming a mind reader, Oto. I'm not used to pinks and I can't find the red I like so maybe I need to give Quin Rose a chance... All quinacridones need a good swatch treatment - there's Quin Red, Coral, Fuchsia, Lilac... Very confusing to make a choice :D some orangey ones confuse me as well. Really want to try Burnt Scarlet. Too many options...

    I love these colors. I'm getting a quinacridone Rose in M. Graham watercolors, but I might change it to Daniel Smith. What's your opinion?

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 лет назад

      Okay, so first of all, you are asking a very biased person this question. But I do controllably love the Daniel Smith's one. I have tried the MG one too, and it is a beautifully intense pink. It is gorgeous. They are close, but I found the MG one is very slightly redder than the DS one.

    • @lemon2612
      @lemon2612 6 лет назад

      Ok, thanks! I'll go for the Daniel Smith, then, because I'm looking for a more magenta-ish quin rose.

    I just purchased Quin Pink and I dont like it at all. It looks nothing like what Ive been looking at on the computer. My art shop does not have proper swatches of the real paint to view. It is ssssssoooooooo bright. Looks nothing like yours or others I have viewed. :-( and it cost $32 in Australia and that was on special.
