Your style of filming back then was for modern youtubers. Even today your this videos looks perfect. And I glad here is no music in this vids, just sound of 90's Japan itself))
Thank you! Actually, the quality varies a bit, with the early 1990 videos being quite rough and not always easy to view (best seen on a small screen due to all the motion). By 1992, the cameras were beginning to malfunction, but while they worked, over two years of experience did teach me a few things about making them easier to watch.
I don't think I've been back to this particular spot since I took this - but they took out fountains at several places in the city (the plaza in front of Shinbashi Station, the old Hachiko location, etc.) so they might have removed it. I'm thinking the removal of fountains might have been an anti-pigeon move?
Yeah, pre-sat-nav I'd get lost and look around for a tall building to go up so I could look around and figure out where I was. Now that kind of access is pretty much all blocked off....
@@lylehsaxon Those large crescent-shaped pieces were still there a few years ago when I last was there. But I never saw water coming from them. (I had wondered why the ground under them had a dip.) That Kanda riverside is a great feature of those neighborhoods. Thank you. Great to see them in your videos.
@@howUlikemenow Now you mention it - I've also noticed fountain/sculpture type things in several places that look like they would still work if the water was turned on, but are dry. I think it probably was/is an anti-pigeon measure. You used to see a lot of pigeons in front of some stations, and I suppose they depended on the fountains for a water supply. I'm not even sure when the last time I saw a pigeon was... they seem to have done a good job getting rid of them.
25:58 I guess they made/repair fences? Here in Spain, until recently, it was common in some areas of the cities or on the suburbs, to see wandering trucks that offered, via megaphone, various duties: sometimes it was gardening, or picking up old appliances ("el chatarrero" ), selling vegetables, sharpening knifes ("el afilador", these ones on bike)... They are much less common now, but it's still possible to see them, and it's always an amazing time capsule :)
I think those are laundry poles. Increasingly people are using electric dryers, but it's still not uncommon to hang laundry on the balcony via a couple of long horizontal poles (parallel to the balcony doors and not overhanging the edge of the balcony). Originally they were made of a non-stainless steel (with a coating) and after many years would begin to rust, and so new stainless steel ones were sold via trucks like this. I haven't seen this for many years....

Love your videos. Amazing record of these places at a point in time.
Thanks!
I was 2 years old at that time. Now I am 33 years old.
Nice footage. happy to see many Japanese people walk. New friend from Jakarta. 🙂🙏
Your videos are fantastic, thanks for taking these and uploading!
ESP?

I jogged that path many years from "06 to '13 and never saw that fountain pouring water. That nice brick path is still the same bricks today.

I noticed a few videos, it seems, you climbed random buildings to get a good view. Cool. 27:20

Great video! Have you been to Mickey House cafe in Takadanobaba? I'm looking for a photo or video there back in the 80's and 90's.
I've been there, but didn't take any pictures or video while I was there.
Lyle Hiroshi Saxon ok, thank you very much for your reply :)

I rode that same bus this year.
Well... this was taken 26 years ago, so it probably wasn't the actual same bus, but the same bus route?
@@lylehsaxon san
isn't the design of buses the same?
The paint scheme may be the same, but the mechanical design of the buses is qutie different actually - especially the interior layout....
